Title: Any good restaurants to go to in downtown Baton Rouge?
Post by: neverbackdown_x7x on April 08, 2012, 09:15:05 AM
Looking up different restaurants near the River Center and trying to get a good idea of a few good places to eat at when I go there soon. Nothing expensive but good.

10 mins from the bowling alley at most with a great lunch menu. Dinner is a little more pricey. Ate there twice. Great tex mex food.

Last time the open was in Baton Rouge we ate at Mike Andeson seafood restaraunt. I am hoping it is still there the food was excellent. Place was really popular so wait was over an hour. Have to say it was worth the wait though. It was not that close to down town, but since we drive over from Texas that wasn't a problem.

Checked and it is still there. www.mikeandersons.com  Definetely not close to downtown.

Just got back i ate and JT ribs one night and one night we ate at a place called Boutini's  awesome food.  The last night i ate at  a place called Ruth Chris steak house.  all i can say about that place is WOW.  very very pricey but it was probably the best steak i have ever had in a restaurant.  3 of us at there for 160.00 bucks no alcohol.  lol  The last night there i ate and Schlitz and Giggles awesome pizza.  And Mike's seafood is still there and still very popular by the look of the parking lot.

I ate at Ruth Chris in New Orleans (also have one here near Indianapolis) last summer during my honeymoon and it was pretty good but I agree that it was quite pricey. Lucky for us we had a $30 gift card as one of our wedding gifts so we only spent like $11 out of pocket. I did look up Schlitz and Giggles' website this morning and I definitely marked that as one of the places to eat at.

Agreed on TJ's.  We ate there last time in BR and we ate there again this time.  Both were really good experiences.

We also ate at Zea Rotisserie this time around and thought that was good.

From Matt Cannizzaros blog on bowl.com

"- For traditional Louisiana fare: Parrain's Seafood Restaurant (I recommend the black and bleu tuna); Drusilla Seafood Restaurant (I recommend the raw oysters and all-you-can-eat catfish); Juban's; Mike Anderson's Seafood (the Baton Rouge location is temporarily closed, but there's another one in Gonzales, La.).

- For barbeque: There is nothing like T.J. Ribs. If I could eat there every day, I would be OK with that.

- For sushi: Nagoya Japanese Seafood Buffet or Sushi Masa

- For pizza: Schlitz and Giggles (walking distance to the venue and good enough for this New York-born eater); I've also been told that Pastimes Restaurant has good pizza and isn't too far from the River Center.

- For burgers: Frostop (across the street from the River Center- I recommend the burger and fries lunch special, and don't forget to try the root beer); Cheeburger Cheeburger (yes, I know it's a chain, but it's awfully good); The Londoner (offers more than 100 beers and boasts big, delicious burgers. There's also a coupon in the bowler coupon book).

- For wings: Hard to argue about the all-time greats. There are a number of Hooters, Buffalo Wild Wings and Pluckers locations that will satisfy your wing needs. From my personal research, Hooters has all-you-can eat wings on Tuesdays, Pluckers has AYCE boneless wings on Thursdays and BWW has 45-cent wings or 55-cent boneless wings at least three days each week.

- For something nearby: As mentioned, Schlitz and Giggles is a short walk for great food. There's also Shucks on the Levee, Jobe's Cafe, Lucy's Retired Surfers Bar and Restaurant, Subway and many more options just a few blocks from the River Center. Downtown Baton Rouge really looks great!

- For drinks, appetizers and more: I am a big fan of The Chimes. Although I don't drink much beer, the selection is vast. I do, however, recommend the blackened alligator and seafood lasagna. Outstanding, and only a few miles from downtown."

Went to tj ribs one day for lunch.  Was good (not excellent)... Maybe biased from being in TX for a couple of years.  Ate one evening at a small place called Jubans...  In a little strip mall, doesn't look like much from the outside..... But phenomenal food.  Little on the pricey side, but one of the better meals I've had in quite some time.

Also ate at Ruffino's one night.  Quite good Italian food.

We also talked about going there, too. Their website has a very good selection of food in their menu.

Shucks on the levee is connected to the Belle Hotel about half a block from the river center. Very good seafood, and very big portions. For what you get, I didn't think the price was bad at all.......really good gumbo!
