Humbling and Humiliating

With house conditions such as they are, Ball technology getting better, I have gone from a pure stroker to decent tweener, with a lot of hand/wrist to get the ball around the corner. 14.5 - 15 mph with about 350-400 Revs.


Now we come to the sport patterns and USBC nationals.


I went with a team of guys that primarily point the ball from somewhere between 10 to 15 to the pocket.  I like to swing the ball a little, so my preferred line is 13 to about 6 and back.  Working as a team to break down the lanes usually gets me blank stares, so I was pretty much on my own.


The short pattern would not allow me to use my sanded equipment (Modern Marvel 4000 grit, Nano 4000 grit, or world Beater 2000 grit).  I settled on my polished c300 ourburst (4000 + polished).  I physically bowled as well as I have ever bowled.  11 to 7 to pocket.  9 out of 11 solid pocket with about a 30% carry.  I stuck with it to see if the lanes would begin to carry.  They did not.  538.  Humbling.


Thought long and hard that night an decided that since everyone was inside of me, I would try my sanded equipment and go inside of them.  15 board, here I come!


I was right, I could actually carry.....however.

miss one board to the right or push the ball too much leaves washout or 2-8-10.

miss one board to the left or too much hand leaves big-4.

a pocket without enough hand was a 7-10.


To illistrate my point, my last game of singles:

4 doubles for a 183.


Never broke 190 for 9 games.  1550 all events.

Humiliating.

 

Since I came back, I am trying to get back to being more of a Stroker.

Sounds to me like you had a good game plan with the Outburst.  If the look was that good but only struggled with carry, did you think about just knocking off the polish on it?  The problem is that the balls that were dull were all higher end stuff.  From what I understand, it seems like stuff that is milder with surface is working the best and then stuff with polish works best when you can move inside and open up.  I dont think your release had anything to do with it as much as it was just ball choice.  Rumor has it that there is alot of friction on the backend so the need for higher end stuff is not a necessity except to burn the spot in practice out by the 5 board unless you really hum the ball down the lane.  At 15 mph, I would have never recommended anything higher end for you because you are pretty rev dominate.  Balls like the Outburst, Freeze, and Vibes would have worked best for you.  Every year is a learning experience my friend.  Just remember next year if you go out that just because you have balls at a certain surface doesnt mean that you cant change them while you are out there.

My speed and rev rate are not much different than yours. I have found, especially on sport patterns that I need to use more conservative drillings and equipment, emphasizing length and control. I have nothing with a pin closer than 5" from my axis and use symmetric equipment primarily. Urethane is a big part of my short pattern arsenal. Also, using light surface (3k-4k abralon no polish) gets me good length while controlling the back ends.

last year i shot 1814 for all events...

 

never shot a set under 600

Yes, last year's 1814 lulled me into a false sense of security.  I thought that sanding my outburst would make it react like the higher end balls.  Didn't get any practice on the conditions this year.  I will be better prepared next year.
