Baton Rouge Thoughts
« on: April 07, 2012, 01:56:13 AM »
Got back from BR.  Made some lunch money, but nothing to brag about.  My team went their own direction, none of this breaking the lane down.  I just tried to keep the revs down and the ball in play.

If I were to do it again, I would practice taking the hand out of the ball before I go.  If you come through strong, it would jump through the nose.  Power player should not be surpised with solid 8s and 9s--too much finish.   I would be tempted to bring a ball that I would not normally use because of a lack of backend.  My ideal 2 teams would be a bunch of straight/end over end shooters and we would start at 4/5 board moving in very slowly.  If you don't breakdown the outside you are forced to start 8-10 and move in from there, like I did.

There was a lot of construction north of the center.  Had to do some circles due to one way/street closures. If you are driving on 110 get off on Government St, make a right on St Louis and the parking is on the left.  St. Louis is a block before River.

Parking lot attached to the center had $5 event parking, but sign to the side said $3 parking for 3 hours or more.

Hard to find a water fountain in the center.  I found 3.  1 for lanes 1-24, 1 for lanes 25-48, and 1 next to the table at the end of squard room near the brackets.  However, there were people rolling beer, soda, and water for sale to the bowlers during all squads.  For me the drinks were a bit pricey.  $5 beer. $3.50 soda (out of machine).

Hi Wilbert   Thanks for the info

I am curious about surfaces.  Did you use anything polished?

In singles and doubles?

4000 grit or duller?

Did you change balls during team event?

Thanks for any info.

I just got back too.  The shot is tough and the approaches are tacky.  I'm 187 ave so take my info at your own risk.  There is lack of hold at least in the beginning and the back ends are screaming which for me actually helped.

If you want to see the shot before the tourney you can either pay $90 -$125 hr for the showcase lanes, which isn't bad if you have a team or two to spread the cost and it gives you a chance to practice breaking the lanes down.  The great thing about the  lanes is every session is fresh oil, I guess they re-oil for every group of people.  The showcase lanes hook a little more than the actual tourney lanes though.  But the shot is pretty close and you get to see the lack of hold, the screaming back ends and all the balls outside of five with belly go in the gutter.

The cheaper option if you are alone is to go to don carter all star lanes in baton rouge, maybe 15 minutes away and they have the same shot.  Plays pretty close and what I really saw was the lack of hold.

I'm 250-300 revs which means if I throw it well I'm 300 and if I don't then I'm 250.  Use a pin up 1000 grit infinite theory for team  and a pin over bridge out of box crossroad for singles and doubles.  Shot by singles was fourth arrow or deeper but I think key is more ball speed in minors to control back end.  Shot 600 in singles, which hopefully will cover some of the oysters I ate.

I used a med polished ball (1500-2000?), with a weak cover (Superflex).  The pin was about 1.5 inches from PAP.  The CG was about 8 o'clock relative to the pin.  The ball was drilled to roll quick and evenly.  The polish help me get the ball through the front.  Even with this drill pattern, if I hit up on the ball it would jump.  Used the same ball for t/d/s.  Did not have anything weaker.  If I had a weaker ball, I could come through the shot in my normal manner instead of trying to lay off the shot.

In team I finish about 13/14 going out to 10.  My d/s was at 11:40 am-third squad.  I was fortunate to have no high rollers burning up the inside.  Started at 16/17 out to 12/13.  Ended 18/19 to 12/13.  No one on my pairs played inside the 15 so I had it to myself.

rdw mentioned tacky approaches.  I heard that too, so I came with a pair of shoes with a telfon sole.  I had no problem.

Someone pointed out something that I should mention.  I spoke alot of weak balls and taking the hand out of the ball.  This is true if you plan to play the middle (8 or deeper).  However, if you plan to play outside (4/5) you may need a stronger ball and some hand.
