Title: BE CAREFUL!
Post by: SunStorm300 on March 16, 2010, 12:45:47 AM
just got word of one of the bowlers from illinois that was out in reno bowling this last week...getting attacked while walking out of the eldorado.  I want to say he ended up getting hit with a baseball bat to the face...broken jaw and such.  From the response of the police there...it sounded as if this was not out of the ordinary...so please be careful!

Wonder if there are people going into the casinos and scouting people out who may have won a few bucks.  As soon as they walk outside, those "scouts" are attacking them and trying to get their cash.  Would like to know more to the story.  Couldnt imagine people outside doing this just because.  Stranger things have happened though.  But, thanks for the heads up.

I did a quick check on crime stats and per 100k residents Reno has a high assault rate.  I guess it's good to travel in groups in Reno.

Yeah I heard something about this last night. I guess he was collecting his bracket money and got jumped. I heard it was at the Sands though. That sucks...your feeling really good after having a great tournament, your team is in the lead and then stuff like this happens! I don't go until next month and we already said we will be traveling in pairs when leaving the casino's. I will be watching my back at all times when I'm there!

We stayed at the Sands.
Day is pretty safe, fair amount of activity inside and out.
Thursday night was fairly light in human traffic
Friday I walked with my kids to Circus Circus and felt OK.
Saturday night however was like a whole differnt element, and not good. Lots of seedy people in an out.
We drove up from Frisco and the parking garage has a low ceiling which my truck would not enter (stock 4WD dodge if it matters). coming back from 5:30 team, and dinner, i had to park in the back. bad lighting, bad vibe, didnt feel comfortable then.
Wait til daylight to pickup your brackets. Enter through the side facing the bowling stadium where there are other open businesses, closer to bracket pickup too, and should be fine.

good advice rocnbol. we bowl 8:30pm team/Sunday  & 5:30pm d/s/Monday, so we will probably pick up our bracket money the next day after each event. not worth the trouble of worrying about stuff like that.

does anyone know who the person was from Illinois? reason i ask is i am from IL and know of a group of guys who are from the Joliet, IL area that were out there around the same time this stuff happened.

Posted a message on the Bowl.com asking about this alleged incident and security in general. Here is the response posted back by USBC:

"Just wondering if anyone from USBC could comment on the rumors going around about the guy getting attacked outside the Sands after picking up his bracket winnings.... Anything being done to make bowlers feel a little more secure either at the Sands or on the way there, security wise?"

This rumor is not true and likely stems from the following incident:

According to his teammates, there was a bowler who was on the street in the early morning hours walking between two hotels, neither of which were the Sands and suffered an injury requiring medical treatment. This did not occur outside the Sands.

No robbery occurred.
No police report was filed.

USBC has spoken with Reno Police and we was told no problems involving bowlers of any kind have been brought to their attention.

Casinos in Reno deal with large sums of money everyday. Bowlers at the Open Championships can feel confident about their safety and the security measures in place.

I hope this clears things up.

Jason, has most of the facts correct. No police report is correct. He did suffer a broken jaw and other injuries Was taken to Hospital. There where no witness to the attack. And the person that was injured can not remember much he was out late etc.
I did speak to 2 of his teammates this week. I know 3 of them and 1 for more than 30 years so I do believe them. As rumors grow so does the legend.

Hope this helps

So he was taken to a Reno area hospital, with injuries from an assault and the hospital didn't report it to the Reno PD?

Somehow that just doesn't sound right.

When I read the response from Jason Overstreet on the bowl.com forum it gave me the impression that they were trying to say that the guy was drunk and fell on his face.

Exactly what I was thinking as well. I lived in Reno for several years and though there are some "shady" areas of town, the casinos are the life blood of the city and the state. I can't imagine a safer place to be than downtown Reno around the casinos. Unless of course, your too drunk to walk since their sidewalks are made of concrete too. :-)

It's not right and it's illegal as far I know. If he was assaulted, the hospital HAS to report it the police....just like if someone comes in with a gunshot wound.

If he did get hit to make this happen, then he may have provoked it or started it and didn't want to face any possible charges himself so he didn't report it.

not to mention that if it happened on Casino property, there WOULD be video of the incident (not to mention witnesses).  Even a robbery without witnesses would still be something with a police report...trust me on that one.  I cannot imagine being beaten and robbed and NOT calling the cops...

The lack of report and lack of video of an assault tell me that this is a story that mushroomed out of the realm of believability and into the realm of rumor accepted as fact.

He wasn't robbed.  My team mates know the guy as they are from the SW Chicago burbs as well.  He was leaving the Eldorado and headed back to Harrah's.  He was beaten, but they didn't take any money from him.  It happened out on the street, I could be wrong, but I don't remember seeing any video cameras once you got away from the doors.

The statement from Reno PD said they knew of no incidents involving bowlers.  So unless the PD specifically asked if the victim was a bowler, why would they have it on record that he was there for bowling?

Probably will never know exactly what happened.  Maybe they planned on robbing him, but were interrupted, maybe it was someone from inside the casino that he had words with before going outside, or maybe it was just a random act of violence.

the only thing that really matters is that the person is hopefully recovering well and will be back to 100% soon.

Well, I just got back from my trip and you can't go ANYWHERE with out someone asking for a handout, some very beligerantly.  Don't walk alone!!
We got out there Wed afternoon the 17th and just got back Yesterday, the 22nd.
Stayed at the Sands.  Didn't matter if you where in the stadium or out, inside the hotel/casino or out, and anyplace in between.  With four teams at least 50% of us got approached at one time or another, some repeatedly.  It happened at all hours of the day as well.  In talking with shuttle drivers the area is hurting and if not for the bowling community would be really sad.  They don't have the glitz of Vegas and with Casinos just about any place you go they aren't the destination they once where.  They have heard stories and feel terrible that one group that is supporting the area is getting so much hassle and just hope nothing serious happens.
