Pretty disappointed
« on: May 10, 2009, 04:49:55 AM »
This was said by some in the Vokes comment thread but I wanted to put it up top.  It's pretty sad that someone accomplishes something like that and many people can do nothing but undermine and bash him.

Who cares if he got a good cross and a team blew the pair open for him?

Some comments were made about his form....what's the problem?

He has a very strong release and ball roll.  His arm swing is simple and not forced.  In all honesty he reminds me of Bob Learn Jr....I doubt anyone wants to bash "Mr. 300" for his arm swing....so why trash Mr. Vokes?

It just gets old that we as a group can't commend good performances and have to tear them down.  Are we that jaded that we just can't accept someone just bowled good and got a few good breaks (anyone that shoots that much gets help...I don't care who you are)?

Just my rant....now bash me all you want.

Seemed to me most of the complaints weren't about his bowling style as much as it was about his dressing style.

People seemed unhappy that he had jeans and an un-tucked shirt.

There were a few comments about his game scattered in there....and quite a few about one of his shots getting wide and coming back.  The implication was that he had a walled up pair and could throw it everywhere and strike.

Yeah, there will always be people like that. My reply usually is "If it was so easy, why didn't EVERYONE on that pair shoot big scores?"

He obviously had something going for him that others didn't. How it got there and why he matched up to it so well, theres no way to know. He was just a pretty good bowler who had the right ball, the right skill set, and the right team bowling before him to burn him a shot in that lasted that way for him. Or, maybe it was just his time.

And something else. It wasn't just a single game or a single set, he shot 2300+ for NINE games. That's over a 250 average for three different events on different days, probably following different bowlers each time.

He caught a good cross, made the right moves, and threw the ball well to take advantage of his situation.  A THS is as walled up as it gets and you still don't see many people averaging 257.  All the pieces fell into to place for him.  Congrats to some amazing bowling Mr. Vokes!

I hope I shoot 900 at Nationals so they can complain about my jeans and untucked polo shirt---the rules say I can wear them, so whats the problem?

Come-on guys?!  What do you need to know?  He's been my teammate for years, I was on the pair with him.  HE WAS WIRED!  It happens in life, we all have been there - his, by the luck of God was at the National Tourney!

This is a free wheeling 4th arrow bowler.  He doesn't "conform" to the norm, whether that be the lane condition or the way he was dressed.  Just so everyone knows in team event he played 10 to 6!  YES 10 to 6!  AND shot 767 doing it.  It helped us shoot 3285! That's his "D" game but we convinced him that if he started at 15 with a polished ball he'd ruin it for all of us.  Hey we had to BEG him to take his ball to the Track booth and have it hit with 4000 abralon!!  He likes to play deep and wheel it, period!  In singles and doubles the shot playes deeper.  Did we catch a good pair and a good draw I'd say yes but he still had to throw 30 in a row and they were not cheap.  All flush no cross over's nose divers.  He was in the zone and scores showed it.

Let's cut him a little slack - you don't do that for 9 games with all luck!  He matched up, carried and shot the block of his life!

Russell,
Just to show you I'm not all bad...I agree with you 100% on this.

Mr Vokes did what he was supposed to do as a bowler, what we all wish we could everytime we step on the lanes. He found a shot with a certain release and a certain ball that allowed him to create room others just didn't have. He then exploited that to an awesome score. He deserves nothing but credit and praise.

The other thing I think people forgot is how many posts did we see on here, and on bowl.com of people complaining of their carry? There were quite a few that I remember. So a lot of people were hitting the pocket, just couldn't carry. So Mr. Vokes could have been the same way, maybe shooting 780-790-800 and I bet nobody would have been complaining about anything. But he had the stars aligned just right and he had the tournament of a lifetime. It is a shame to tarnish this accomplishment even a little bit with petty bickering over things like how he was dressed or his form.

I was there while he bowled singles and doubles. He deserves credit for bowling great and taking what the lanes gave to him. That's all any of us can hope for.

I am sorry but the dress code issue is a mute point.  Everyone has to complain about something but for all those "haters" out there they need to bone up on their rules.  Many tournments will allow blue jeans if the person is wearing a knee brace.  Who cares about the shirt being untucked... Go scream at Walter Ray or any other pro on tv for that stuff if you want to complain.

No what Vokes did was great I watched the video and honestly I only wish I could accomplish 80 percent of what he did.  Congrats and hopefully he will be the champion this year for Great bowling.
