I live in Cincinnati and there is no way anyone can tell you that.  It varies to much.  I can tell  you this.

Synthetic lanes and approaches.  If they are dry they are DRY.  Not great carry and approaches are the worse i have ever been on.

Nod, sounds like the Hoinke I grew to know and love. Stopped going there in the early 90's after we saw various 170-180 average bowlers shoot +1200 for the five game singles. There was some definite sandbagging going on at their home lanes. Tough shot, and yes absoulutely terrible approaches back then. Some lanes were very slick approaches, and some were so tacky you would squeak each shot.

I just got back from the tourney this past weekend. Shot was awful. No recovery on the back end at all. I think I had 3 games all weekend over 200. I did shoot a 126 though trying to get a Split King T-shirt.

Well Im sorry to say that a man that won this event 4 or 5 years ago is considered a bagger by your standards but if you watch him bowl you would know different.  Hi is a very low track spinner and low ball speed not saying you cant do well like this but his form is rough to look at.  His league average was around 185 at the time.  This is at a legitimate house not a slot house that most places have become.  It is a shame that people have to put down his best ever shooting.  He never shot 800 before, no 300's, not more than 1 290+ as I can recall.

This man had the greatest day of his bowling career at the hoinke period.  You can say he was bagging, you can say he cheated if you like but the fact is he beat everyone scratch as well.  Sounds a little different now huh?

I know this is not going to happen but if proprietors would stop putting down easy slot shots and inflating everybody's average then the actual accomplishment of this mans bowling could be recognized.  It is observed to think that for how long this tournament is held throughout the year that somebody would not bowl their best ever.  The odds are heavily in favor of 1 person bowling their best ever.

I have gone to this tournament for the past 3 years, my father for the past 27years.  He and I have both seen people with 220avgs there with a beer in their hand and 5 empties on the table complaining that the shot sucks and they are better than that.  This is proof to me that a majority of 215+ bowlers are just hacks when you act like a jerk yelling about the condition.  Im not trying to knock every 220+ bowlers.  I know quite a few, some on this site, and I respect their abilities and that they are much better than I.

Sorry about the rant but I hate for this man to be labeled by people who do not know him and bowl on soft conditions then try and compete on a tougher shot.  I say tougher because it is defiantly scoreable.
Thanks Rob.

Ive bowled in this tournament twice.  I believe it was '02 and '03.  I've carried a 220+ average for the past 4 years and had no trouble with the conditions out there.  Numerous people I went with had trouble sticking but I dont put my heel down till late so I had no trouble at all.  The first year I went I shot pretty good.  Overall averaged around 215 for the entire event and made absolutely no money.  The last year I went I averaged I believe 224 for the total even and did make $25 in all events.  This is pretty much a genuine handicap tournament.  If you are a scratch or near scratch bowler you have to have a couple awesome days to make any money.  Had I carried a little better I would have probably been 700+ for  team and doubles then whatever that is for 5 games (dont feel like thinking).  I enjoyed the tournament though some of the people that bowled when I did were incredibly rude.  A pet peave of mine is someone bringing their stuff over, putting it on our lanes, including balls on ball returns when we are still bowling.  I even had a couple people walk in front of me while on the approach put their stuff on the ball return.  That's another story though.  All in all, a good tournament, just hard to do well due to the handicap in it.  I figured it up and the last time I went I would have had to average 274 in singles to take 1st place when i was there.

No..actually doesn't sounds any different at all.  I would say this is the definition of baggin...  I would say you have a better chance of hitting the power ball lottery than averaging 185 and winning a MAJOR tournament outright..without even having to use your handicap.

I'm not saying that its impossible for a lower average bowler to throw a great game or even a great set... but it IS very unlikely that that person is going to bowl incredibly well over many games on tough conditions.

I don't get many sticks, but the brackets sure are sweet.

Wish I could have ventured to the bracket table.  Unfortunately I dont have much money so I'm not able to get in many and sometimes any brackets at all so it ends up being an even bigger waste of money.  That and the fact I have terrible luck in brackets.  The 1st year i went i bowled pretty well yet it seemed whoever I had always shot better than me.  Oh well.

When you're on a good roll, bowling well, and have great confidence in your gane.

I normally shoot it in the early summer (June), before it gets to hot.
I enjoy shooting the Hoinke, like the Nationals.
Last year I had 2 games under 200 out of 13 games. Had 5 opens in 13 games...No Carry, as always. Brackets were good to me, though.

I've been there the last 3 years, and the one thing I can say is the shot changes fast.  On fresh it starts out with an OOB outside of 10, and seems dry in the middle.  If you pull a shot you'll crossover, and if you swing it outside it's not coming back.  I've thrown and seen a few gutterballs by otherwise high average bowlers.  But, when the shot breaks down after the first squad the lanes dry out quick.  Generally it's a tough shot to score well on though.  I've had a few big games out there, but it's hard to put together a big set because of the transitions.

I've always found the approaches fine, a little slick maybe, but I don't mind the extra slide.
