DH,I used to go especially to Reno but I finally figured out that I was being soaked in order to pay for the Pros and 220-240 avg bowlers out there and the ones that get a chance to bowl on such unusual conditions.Plus depending on your squad depends on the type of condition you get. In other words not everyone bowls on the same conditions making the tournament even more unfair. The 2-3 times that I have bowled the tourney in Reno the officials have treated the bowlers like Sh-t and some of the hotels were not very kind the last time I was there.USBC runs this tourney but does not make a level playing field for everyone and if most of the rest of the other bowlers in the lower avg part of the reg. div. realized it they probably wouldn't go either!!!

I'll ya what.  I'm in Vegas now, we bowl tonight and I don't think you could pay me to come back to this place.  Reno is so much easier to get around and far cheaper to stay then Las Vegas.  The roads/freeways are a nightmare here. Its a struggle to get anywhere in a vehicle.  I swear the traffic lights are twice as slow as anywhere else.  Food and beverages are extraoridnarily expensive.  Accomodations are more expensive then Reno.

If you have only gone to Vegs for your Nationals experience, please don't hold it against Reno for bowling again.

BRING ON RENO!!!

Having been to Vegas over 30 times in my life and this year being the second time I have bowled there, I would totally agree that Reno is a better place to get around and bowl in. You can walk almost anywhere, and its not as crowded as Vegas is now.

Vegas was the place to eat and stay in 72 when it was my first time.

Our teams plan to be at Reno the next 2 years. I've been at all the Reno tournaments since 1990.

We go every year to nationals regardless of where it has been. This year was my 23rd trip.

I much prefer Vegas. Easier to get to, much more to do, and I feel much safer.

We stay at the Silver Legacy in Reno and it is easy to walk back and forth to the stadium but I wouldn't venture 2 blocks away in any direction at night.

Yes, I will be going to Reno.  To those who have not had a good experience
here in Vegas, I'm sure that it was much better going to exotic places in
the past (Montana,etc.).

I love Reno.
I lives in Vegas in 1980...town has really changed.
The freeways reminded me of being home in Chicago.
I won't be back, to Vegas.

Not, no money at this point, but things could potentially change between now and then if someone needs to be replaced from the local group.

Crying about the pros, or the 220-240 average bowlers makes you a sorry excuse for a human being.  Since your not on their level of play, you expect things to be catered to you?  Why do you deserve the special treatment?  I find it absolutely disgusting that this is a sport where the less talented bowlers bi#ch moan and complain instead of working harder and smarter to get better at the sport.

I've never experienced a sport where the top skilled players are pissed on so much by the lower skilled players to the point where the top skilled player wants to just quit playing their baby games.  Handicap, Handicap, Handicap, banning skill levels, shunning skill levels, rejecting skill levels...etc..etc.

This is such a simple game to master when you think about it.  It's up to you to determine what your skill level will be.  There are very few ceilings or limitations on how good you really can be at it.

At this moment we'll be there. But the economy might have an impact on us getting there. There are still lay-offs being planned before the end of the yr.This will be only the fourth consecutive yr. that we go. We enjoyed Reno.

I say screw Vegas! Rude employees almost every place we visited. The Rio casino is such a dump! I did enjoy the Mandalay bay. Prices were very high and the so called free drinks at all of the casinos took so long to get that it just was not worth the wait. I went to Reno the last two times the event was held there and I just loved it there. By far hands down better that Vegas. I will never go there again.

My team already signed me up so I guess I might go, but to be honest if it is all about gambling in that town(like Vegas), then they will be looking for someone else! I am really not into all that. Now Corpus was excellent for me, the bowling was just a interruption of my fishing. I have family there and we went almost every summer growing up and I flat tore up the speckled trout and redfish, and I bowled better also!!

I'm going.  Next year will be #9 in a row.  I enjoy bowling with my dad, brother and the other guys in our group.  I actually hate Reno though, I think the only place I've been that I liked less was my first year in Billings.

I had a blast in Vegas, there's more to do there than just gamble, more girls walking around, more people seemed to be having fun.  I'm not looking forward to so many trips to reno the next few years, but I guess it's better than not having a tournament.

Reno is about gambling but its much more laid back then Vegas.  So I'm not sure if just the gambling was distasteful to you or the hectic pace of Vegas, or the expense of Vegas.

I had a great time at Nationals in '07.  I'd really like to get back to Reno next year.  Money is a real issue, though.

I have an interview tomorrow for a job that pays almost twice what I'm earning now.  If I get the job, I'm definitely going!

Atochabsh, I would not say the gambling was distasteful, it is just I am personally not into it like most bowlers seem to be. I will enter brackets and side pots at times, but to me that is different, I execute and I will take home some cash, if I don't then I wont.I am just more of a outdoorsman type I guess, and I could only imagine what that would cost around the Vegas area, lol.

I may go to Nationals at some point in my life, only if the bring it closer to the east coast. Traveling that far for a bowling tournament is a bit ubsurd. They should have East and West coast divisions.....thats just my opinion. Maybe that way they could get more people to attend. Not to mention for someone like me that only bowls on a house shot twice a week, whats the point to shoot on a pattern that is that much more difficult. Dont get me wrong, i love to bowl as much as the next guy but to go to nationals on a pattern I never see, its just not worth the trip.

I think they've tried to have it on the east coast. But finding a venue big enough for the full length of time needed is nearly impossible.  You can bet that if the Bowling Stadium didn't already exist in Reno that the open would NOT be there that often.

Yes, I plan to go to Reno next year, because I always go, and I've already paid.

Although you didn't ask, I'll be going to Reno again in 2011, Baton Rouge in 2012, Reno in 2013, and wherever in 2014 and beyond.

I enjoyed the trip to Vegas.  I drove this year from Chicago, and it was an enjoyable drive.  I had no problems with traffic in Vegas, but I did not take my car anywhere near the strip.  We stayed at Sam's Town, and when we visited the strip or Fremont Street, we took the free Sam's Town shuttle.  We used the monorail to get around when we went to the strip.  It all worked out very well.  I did make several runs to the airport from Sam's Town to pick up members of our group, and had no problems with traffic for any of those trips, either.

I enjoy Vegas in small doses, and will be returning in the future.

Get off of the Strip and the big name casinos and you find very affordable prices.

Stratosphere $29 a night wondeful clean rooms

$19 all you can drink happy hour from 4-8

$20 all yo ucan eat all day buffet (Breakfast Lunch and Dinner all included)

Drinks at the tables and slots came around so fast I culd not finish them before she got back.

Orleans and Gold coast are great casinos at great values as well.

Looking forward to going (in March, I believe) with a different team than I went with to Vegas this past year.  It'll be a fun vacation and I love bowling in a big tournament like this.  I'm not one of the best bowlers out there, but I'm far from the worst, so I should at least make back a few of the dollars I spend.

Rick,
That's a nice drive if you make the time, and you don't mind driving.
I lived in Vegas in 1979-81. I visited in 1991, and thought it had changed.
I was in shock...
My wife always hated Vegas, now she does meeting planning, and a lot of people love Vegas.

How are you doing?

1) I am not exactly sure how many bowlers are going, but my guess is 65,000

2) I am going because I moved out of CT about 11 years and it is the one time each year that I get to see a group of my friends that I otherwise would likely lose track of.

(as to those with $$ issues, that is certainly understandable and I am lucky that so far it has not been a problem with me. as to those with bowling/tournament issues, just have fun and treat it as a challenge.)

I will be going to Reno next year. I just got back from Vegas last night and although I did not bowl the best (1st timer), my team cashed and I had a great time. If Reno is priced less than Vegas (hotel, food, etc) then I will be there with a big grin. Wife and I made a mini vacation out of it and had fun. She played at the pool and slot machines and I bowled and played a lot of blackjack. Ended up ahead at the bj table and down a little on slots. The travel up and down the strip was a major pain during busy times (stayed at the Mirage) but there are some back roads to take to save time with traffic. I enjoyed the bowling experience (was a bit overwhelming at first) and am already looking forward to next year.
I guess the main question I have is:
Is Reno that hot in July as well? 110 first 3 days there even though we had a nice storm Monday night and 85-90 for a low is something I am not used to anymore.

Cant wait for Reno

Laner7pin,

There are several large casinos within walking distance to the bowling stadium.  El Dorado, Silver Legacy and Harrahs are just a few.  Most of the other larger hotels/casinos will have shuttles.  Taxies are less (Vegas taxi = $3.30/ 1/12th mile).  The general traffic of the city is less.  I've stayed at El Dorado and Silver Legacy many many times and never had a bad experience.  Circus Circus is fairly close as well.

The Peppermill, Atlantis are on the other side of town as are the Nugget and Grand Sierra.  Call to make sure they have shuttles.
