Can alcohol be used to clean oil off the ball during, before play begins, or after at Nationals? I wanted to take a little bottle with me to clean my ball after bowling and to clean my thumb hole incase it gets sticky after removing tape.

Isopropyl or rubbing alcohol is acceptable for use during certified competition. If you go to the link below under the section named "Solvents and Other Chemicals", you will be able to find it.

Well even though it states IPA is acceptable during certified competition, the rules for Nationals said it isn't. Thanks for the info though.

I think that means during play. Before the set, and after is okay.

Another300, look closely at the note from the USBC Open.....This only applies to the outside of the ball. Using IPA to clean inside your thumb is not illegal. And again this only applies after you go through the scale room. And if you find the need to alter the surface after you pass through the scales, as long as their is time, you can always take that ball through the scales again after making the changes.

Isopropyl alcohol isn't chemically capable of breaking up modern lane oils. All you really do with isopropyl alcohol is smear the oil around the surface of the ball.
Mix in a little Simple Green at the very least to have something that will cut through the crud.

Yeah, I read that. I will clean the thumb hole out and have just one piece of tape to start out. I'll add as I need to. Good to know I can remove any tape gunk with IPA if I need to. Unfortunatly I only have my GOTO ball set up at where I want it. I'd hate to change the surface and find out I needed the one I changed it from. Darn, I wish I would have had the money to have another ball drilled the same but with a different surface. My other two balls in my bag have a different reaction. Didn't have the money to update my arsenal.

I think I'll do that. Clean the ball before I go thru the scales then after bowling.

Last year they clarified that ruling about liquids and balls after they've been checked in.
They said specifically that, once the balls had been checked, nothing can touch the ball besides your hands and a DRY towel. To me that means you cannot use anything to clean out your finegr or thumb holes but that same dry towel. Maybe the referees or judges will be more lenient towards you, but I wouldn't count on it,

I guess it depends on who is working. In the past, I've cleaned, and seen others clean, their equipment after check in right in front of lane monitors and other ABC/USBC employees and not once has anyone said anything.

Be aware if you plan on flying that if the FAA inspects your bags that they will toss the bottle. I plan on taking some of those alcohol wipes. They are small but enough to get thumb tape goo out of thumb hole.

Buy the rubbing alcohol in Las Vegas and leave it there. It costs about a buck a bottle, maybe a little more.
