First weekend in Corpus Christi?
« on: February 19, 2006, 11:41:34 AM »
Last post was getting messy and taking a turn for the worse, so I'm starting over.

Any first weekenders care to comment on the conditions / their experiences?  Anyone stop by the center to see any bowling?  My initial impressions of the leader board (http://bowl.com/tournaments/usbcopen/national/main.aspx) is that the scores are higher this year than past years.  Am I able to state that without offending anyone?

Strapper,

You are fine with your observations.  There should be no offense taken when you are stating the truth.  In fact, do not be surprised if 15 of the top 20 in all events at the end of the tournament are left handed with the major bump off the gutter.  I bowled the first weekend and in my squad alone, I shot 1900 and was FIFTH!!!!  Plus, 1900 in years past would have made a pretty penny in the brackets in which I barely broke even.  I could see a low to mid 2200 taking the regular all events title.

Did it look like there was a shot for the righties off the gutter?

What equipment was everyone throwing?

I got the shot put into our machine tonight and put it out on a couple pair (AMF synthetics).  I know its not going to be exact, but at least its an idea...  I had a pretty decent look with two balls.  With my Mercury (label layout, polished), I was playing about 8-9 at the arrows, bellying it out a little.  I also could move in a little deeper (around 12-13 at the arrows) playing the same shot with my Sahara (control layout, box finish).  I had a little room outside, but not much tug room at all.  It seems to be a reasonable shot, but I can image that 2nd shift might get a little toasty...

Strapper,

I threw a Dry Heat pin above bridge and cg in center of grip box finish for all 9 games.  As Jabroni stated, who you cross with plays a great deal on what you use and where.  What I was upset about, is that their oil schedule was different from previous years.  They have 3 squads of singles/doubles in the morning before re-oiling for the first team event of the day.  Memory serves me correctly, it was oil in the morning, 1 squad each of team and s/d and then reoil and repeat the process throughout the course of the day.  We had the last squad that morning (3rd squad after oiling in the morning), so I was playing where Tommy Jones was playing the final game of the US Open.  I bowled on 13-14 for S/D and by the 3rd game of singles, i was standing on lane 13 lofting gutter to lane 14.  It was the deepest I have been at the Natls in quite a few years.  They softened up the shot this year so bowlers of all styles could play anywhere on the lane and score.  Crankers can get deep and open up and the strokers can play off the gutter with ball reaction and success with the right bowler/ball matchup.  Jabroni made a comment to me in Corpus that if I had a Desert Heat, I could have whacked them in s/d, but I did not anticipate needing something weaker than a "Dry Hook" as he put it.

Thanks for the input... I had noticed that there was a chance of hitting 3rd shift oil...  I would imagine the lanes would be a bit toasty at that point.  I'm going to make sure I have something to get down the lane..

Thanks,

I "interned" this past summer at Wright-Patterson AFB...  And if I play my cards right, may be in line for a civiliam position there this fall.
