Looking Ahead to Reno 2004
« on: June 12, 2003, 01:47:30 PM »
Seeing as how the ABC Nats is returning to Reno next year (which I love bowling in Reno at the Stadium), I was curious about what people's thoughts were about the event next year.  I was reading a couple of months ago in one of the bowling magazines where it actually acknowledged that the Stadium was a lefties house, due to the lane topography of the lane beds....the article admitted that the Brunswick lanes there (or I'm assuming they are Brunswick, since they put in Brunswick pinsetters) are rougher on the right side than they are on the left.  Even the Pros have found that the Stadium tends to favor the lefthanders.  I was wondering if the above will have any effect on the entries of those righthanders that are wanting to make the trip.

Myself, even though I'm a rightie, I would still be interested in making the trip to Reno if things work out that I can.  I know that I'm at a disadvantage, but I still like bowling there.

Already have spots reserved for next year.  We've been going the Thurs/Fri before Memorial Day for the last 5 years.  With the holiday, it makes ir easy to schedule a vacation around the tournament.

Never been to the Nationals.... always wanted to go, never been able to put together a viable team to go.  If I can get a team together or get on a team I will be there for sure, left-handed house or not.

My coach told me another way is to just show up...there are always spots that open up to sub in.

Just got back from WIBC. Although the lane conditions aren't anything like the ABC tourney, here are some observations about the stadium.
1. It's cold. Although I was comfortable, most of my teammates were freezing. When it was 100 degrees plus outside, it did tend to hold the shot fairly consistently.

I was using equipment with hasty surface prep to react in the massive amounts of oil. Bowled bad the first two games of team event, pulled my head out, and bowled well the last game of team. Shot big in doubles, poor in singles - we moved from a pair that was reasonably wide open to a pair that was EXTREMELY tight - I had a great 1-2 board wide shot to the pocket, but 8s, solid 9s, 10s (of course), and a multitude of 4-9s and 7 pins made it a VERY difficult set.

But yeah - I LOVE the stadium. There's nothing quite like it anywhere else. I'm going to put together a team for next year.

And - if you're going - we stayed at the Atlantis, and although the casino is fun, and the buffets are pretty good (but expensive), we had lots of problems with the hotel. And they did NOTHING to make it better. We won't stay there next time.

Has any thought been given to creating a BallReview members team for 04?  We appear to have the talent to do so.

I am already signed up for Reno first weekend of June.  After just finding out that I almost won my entry back in Knoxville, I was happy until I found out how much some of my teammates won because of their fairly high singles' scores (690's, 670's, and such).  My first trip to Reno was more for the experience, this time, I'm going to do some damage.  I thought I was crazy for already thinking about it, glad to see others are in the same mind set I am.  And if it's a lefties house, so be it, just play the right side as well as you can, and let them have their fun (as much as there is in Reno) over on the other side.
