Who's in the booth?
« on: April 17, 2018, 09:04:19 PM »
I'm not expecting a lot from the staff in the booth given that this is an "off site" year, but has anyone spotted any drillers with decent reputations in any of the booths yet?

Not sure what you mean here.

I bowled the USBC Tournament when they held it in Las Vegas before they built the facility at South Point. In fact, they built the lanes at Cashman Center, which was north of downtown Las Vegas They had booths there with staffers all over the place, with not only the reputable ones you would normally see at the Stadium or South Point, but also locals there which I definitely could vouch for being reputable (I lived there 6 years prior to this tournament and bowled league with the bulk of them).

In short, i don't see Syracuse being any different. They will want staffers at the booths at Nationals just like they would any other USBC National Tournament. Location of the tournament shouldn't really matter.

Oh, I disagree. It takes a lot of commitment to put out that much time away from your shop, and sometimes the quality, shall we say, varies....  Like the guy normally in the Storm booth who spends half his time explaining how he knows everyone in the industry and what's wrong with each of them, or the guy in Vegas last year who I hadn't seen before. He screwed up a Switch Grip on the first 2 tries, and gave me the third, which hurt so much I had to throw it away. After 29 years, and multiple balls drilled, visits to the booth, I guarantee there are  people in the booths I'd love to know about, and people in the booths I know (now) to stay away from. Fortunately, I'm set now with a decent driller, but I have others going with me who will be looking for help due to issues in their local area. Any good or bad references are certainly appreciated...

The expectation is that the booths are staffed by knowledgeable experienced operators that are good at their craft.

The reality is the booths are mostly staffed by anyone they can find that will go someplace for 6 months and work for 60 hours a week for low wages and a shared apartment.

Exactly my point. Doesn't mean the booths won't have good talent, but it does mean that if any newbies, like most of my team except me, are expecting help, it would be good to know where to send them. A good driller can many times make the difference in ball choice.

Dan Smith is at the Hammer/Ebi/Track/Columbia booth again this year.  Super nice guy,  and very knowledgeable.  PBA/PWBA drilling experience.

+1 for this comment.
We go see Dan every year a day before we bowl team
We adjust surfaces, buy equipment, etc
And then again before minors for surface adjustments if need be

Super guy who lives in the Syracuse area, he had some great tips as far as food places and whatnot
