Title: plane tickets and room rates in reno
Post by: LotsaBalls on December 01, 2010, 08:40:01 AM
Anyone been checking on prices yet? As of right know the best price I can find is 170 more than I paid last year for the same week and same hotel.

cannot speak to Reno but fares to MANY places are up over last year, partly due to the consolidation that has occurred with the mergers and also due to the continued high price of jet fuel.

Expect to see another $10-20 on tickets in the coming months to fund the ongoing Security Theatre nonsense.  Seems the TSA is whining that the present funding is insufficient and they need more money as they continue their freedom gropes...

Edit to add re: rooms:
If you have a players card with any of the casinos out there, check your offers.  I was not going to be going to Reno but peeked at what Harrahs (Total Rewards) had for me- basically every weeknight was showing as a comp during March, April and May with Friday and Saturdays being minimal.  Better offers existed at Tahoe, but I know a bowler would not want to be traveling that far...

Other casinos out there may have similar offers if you play their company...although I don''t know that you could pay me enough to stay in the pit of hell also known as Grand Sierra.

We bowl late May. Harrah's gave me 3 nights(Thurs thru Sat) for a total of $150. Flight from Balt-Wash to Reno was $183 on Southwest.

We are going to Vegas Sunday after bowling, with the flight costing $92. Staying at Harrah's for free for 3 nights.

Flight from Vegas to Balt-Wash was $165.

Right now, Detroit to Reno is 343 + baggage on United and Delta (I think it was of the top of my head) and $344 through Southwest (on less than desirable fly times)

What about bringing your balls on the flight to Reno. Will the airlines ask for a arm and a leg to bring them?

in 3 ball slim totes like this: http://www.bowlerssolution.com/brunswick-slim-fit-triple.html
minus the shoe bag with 3 15 lbs balls comes to right at 50 lbs, which is the weight limit for most airlines for regular checked baggage. That's what makes me consider southwest when I fly. First 2 bags are free, so I check 2 3 ball totes and carry on a small suitcase with up to a weeks worth of clothes and my bowling shoes in them.

We go end of April, CHi Midway lowest with SW non stop round trip $375 but we bought back in oct.  Rooms Atlantis is $49 per night min 3 nights.  We are staying at the Silver Legacy for $59 per night no min.  South west is the best with the bags never been hit with over weight. I take a 3 ball roller and a 2 ball tote. a 10 buck tip never hurts when you check in at the curb.

Always amazing how stuff right at the limit gets on when the curb side attendant sees that $10 bill in your hand!

Just booked on Southwest.. From Detroit to Reno 6:10 travel time (one stop no plane change) and from Reno to Detoit 5:25 travel time (one stop no plane change) was $336.30..  I added Early Bird Check in for an extra $20..

Those are the best travel times I have seen at that rate (other travel times have included several hour layovers with like 8 to 9 hrs travel time..)

Plus BAGGAGE is not an extra charge..  I saw on Continental it was $343 then you still had to add on baggage fees, etc..

**EDIT** Traveling Monday - Thursday end of May

bag fees on CO can be avoided with some of the Chase co-branded credit cards.  Also, if one is flying in F, even via upgrade, then the bag fees are waived.  Delta has a similar deal with one of the co-branded AXP cards.  If one flies more than a few times a year, then any fee that might be paid for the card would MORE than offset baggage fees that might otherwise have been paid.

CO is who I primarily have flown out of IAH and have yet to pay a checked bag fee...

Booked my coach flight going for $165 on AA, then used my frequent flyer miles for a free 1class upgrade returning (no baggage fee). Total cost $205.

I did the NYOP on my trip to Omaha in August...found the lowest fare online and then chopped about $75 off of that...was accepted on United almost immediately.  Much to my chagrin, there was a last-minute cheap airfare that came out about a week later that put the trip a few dollars less (one of the weekend four-day deals CO/UA typically do).  I was routed through ORD and wound up having to spend the night at the hotel there (at UA's expense) because of an IRROPS condition where the last leg of the flight was on a plane with MX issues and there was not a like craft for the crew to take that evening.  They got me booked on the first flight out the next morning and did ultimately give me a credit voucher to be used on future travel (has to be UA metal and not a codeshare though).

Because it was on UA, it let me later add my CO FF number so I got the miles for the flight and it also offered the usual array of free changes at OLCI to change the time of the flight.

Would I do it again?  Only if I can get it to take a real low-ball figure.  Not having the say in departure or routing is a little disconcerting...I don't mind multiple segments or extended routing if it is an airline where I collect the miles but it does not always work out that way.  The other issue you could run into is in the checked bag fees...when you cannot choose the airline, you do not know if you will have one that will be hitting you with those fees or not.

Another option to look at would be Allegiant...some of the poker players swear by them since they are so dirt cheap.  The biggest problem is they don't fly every day out of every airport...but they fill their niche well.  Not sure if they fly into Reno but I believe they do...they seem to be quite the gamblers airline

As an aside...some on FlyerTalk have suggested that there may be a new round of fare sales announced in a few days (COUGH Jan 8th COUGH) because a lot of the current sales are ending on the 7th.

Allegiant is really cheap, I use them from Stockton to Vegas often as they have $39 specials each way. But I don't think they have flights to Reno.

Just checked Southwest.  The best I can find today is $400 roundtrip from BWI, and $440 from Dulles.
Expedia has Dulles for $440 (United), BWI for $430 (Delta), and Reagan for $440 (Continental).

Those are for May 1-7.

Booked my flight 2 weeks ago. Round trip from Allentown,Pa was $318 but looked this week

and it was up to $462. Crazy price increase. I am going March 29-April 2. Staying at Harrah's,

free Tues-Thurs and Fri is only $20 so that is not too bad

Just last week I was looking and I would of had to pay around  $468.00. That was southwest. I could have gotten American a little cheaper than $468.00 but then I would of had to pay a baggage fee, which I don't like at all. So I grabbed it while I could.

 Hey John,

If you're up for it, we will be bowling a tournament called the SP in Carson City while we are there for Nationals. I might have a spot for you if you're interested. Let me know.

It's at 8:00 AM Saturday and Sunday for the SP, you might not want to get up that early.

Our teams are also bowling June 10 -11, we are in the 8:30 team squad and 5:30 D/S.

I've been watching Southwest on flights. Best prices were actually on Jan. 2nd and have gone up and down since, but mostly up. Our plans are to stay at Harrah's just waiting on the June free nights to show up.

Some food for thought...some airlines (I have done this before with Northwest which is now Delta) will reissue your ticket and give you a credit voucher toward a future flight (within a year) if the price drops from your purchase price.  I had to call them to get it, but it was worth it.  I do not know if the airlines still do this, but it's worth a shot.

Southwest offers free changes... even for the same flight.  I got a Sat 4-30 flight from MKE to LAS for $128, flight from LAS to RNO on 5-3 for $75, from RNO to LAS on 5-5 for $75, and a flight from LAS to MKE on 5-6 for $119.

I checked every day and booked when I thought the fare was acceptable.  Then I kept checking and grabbed every single price-down that I could find.

Even after you book on Southwest, check fares every single day.  Fares are lower during mid-week.

Check flying in to other cities. We have 4 of us going in late April. Dulles to San Francisco Round Trip for $254. SF is about 3.5 drive to Reno but for an $800 savings, I will drive it.

^^ I'm doing the same thing.. Flying to San Fran and driving. It's not a bad drive, and we plan on taking a short tour before we depart to Reno.  Just keep an eye on the weather cause Donner Pass can still get occasional snow into April/May.

We paid roughly $475 per person round trip, flying southwest with one stop each way from the north east.
