Tornado slams Billings USBC site
« on: June 22, 2010, 04:15:17 AM »
Serious damage at the complex, although building where bowling was apparently still is standing, Greg Thomas posted on my FB page after talking to friends.

Riggs,
I saw this on AOL the other day and wondered if it was the same place. I couldn't remember the name of it. While this is a tragedy for the town, it could be a benefit (sort of) for bowlers. It appears the building needs extensive repairs, so it could open up a window for the USBC Open to return to Billings. I know a lot of people wouldn't be happy with that, since it is out of the way, but it would be a place we haven't been to 100 times and add a little more diversity into the lineup going forward.

I saw this video yesterday, since I did not attend in Billings, I was curious if that was the location.  Good thing it was not there this year.  I guess this will have to be another thing the USBC considers when choosing a location.  Thanks for the update.

This could happen a lot of places during the summer months. All it takes is the right mixture of hot and cold air masses. I don't think you can take that into account when picking a site. Baton Rouge, Corpus Christi, Billings (obviously) are 3 recent or future ones where this potentially could happen. I would think it really could happen anywhere if the conditions are right. Even though we aren't going there now, Wichita would be another one. If mother nature wants to show us her power, it won't matter where you are.

I grew up in Billings and couldn't believe it when I saw the video.  I hope they can rebuild if there is any hope of ever seeing Nationals in Billings again.  It was sad to see it happen....

Chris,
Glad to hear you are ok and hopefully you didn't suffer any major damage. One thing I forgot to mention is I think there were few if any casualties, which is the most important thing. Structures can be rebuilt, people can't. If anyone did lose their lives in this (the story didn't mention one way or the other) then my sympathies to their friends and families.

Guidry, glad you are ok. How does  a Guidry get to Billings?
A Boudreaux is asking.
