This season will be my first trip to Reno.... so I have a few questions...

1. Where to stay, looking for nice & affordable.

2. Should I rent a car?

3. I'm flying, so do you recommend shipping all equipment out there ahead of time and what is the best way?

I would highly recommend contacting a travel agent and getting a package deal. They can get you great prices with enough notice and lord knows this is enough notice if you know your dates. I would say that you do need a rental car if you want to travel to different places in the city. If you do get a rental car, I would receommend the Peppermill Hotel/Casino, or the new Atlantis Hotel/Casino. We stayed at the Peppermill and loved it and visited the Atalntis Casino and it was nice. If you want to be across the street from the Bowling Stadium, I recommend the Silver Legacy Hotel/Casino. It is nice to but we prefer the other two that are just down the Virgina Ave. about 3 miles from the stadium. I personally would not preship my equipment. I would take it with me unless you have trustworthy friends who are driving. Good luck and good bowling.

1. There are several hotels near the Stadium. Silver Legacy was one of them and the one I stayed at last time. Dont know what the prices are now so cant comment on that. Circus Circus was also nearby.

2. Only if you stay at the Hilton because it is not in the immediate area of the Stadium. Most of the hotels have shuttle services available but some of them do not run late, like after midnight, or only on the half-hour so it would be best to ask the hotels while you are checking on the prices. Several hotels are across the street from the Stadium or within a couple blocks.

3. The weight limits on the airlines seem to have changed again. At one time you were allowed bags up to 70 lbs but several airlines have dropped that limit down to about 50 lbs so it would be best to check with your airline. They also have different restrictions on the number of balls per bag so best to check with them. If you do decide to ship them to your hotel, make sure to do so early enough. Two years ago a teammate's shipment did not arrive until after the tournament. You have to allow for inclement weather even for shipping.

I know you will get more responses to this. Bear in mind my reply was based on my own experiences.

When I was down in Reno for nationals in June, we stayed at the Atlantis. I would NOT recommend it. The rooms were ok, but the amenities were lacking - they closed the pool AND jacuzzi the week we were there, then when they said we could use the indoor spa, they wanted to charge us $6 each use per person for the privilege. No refrigerators in the room, etc, etc.

We extended our stay a few days, and they tried to raise our rate, from $39 for a week night to $189!!!

People I know that stayed at the silver legacy were quite happy. Circus Circus is cheaper, but people were happy with that too.

All the big hotels have shuttle buses from the airport. Reno is really a tiny town, overall. So if you plan to go nowhere else, don't rent a car. However, if you want to visit Lake Tahoe, and I would STRONGLY recommend you take an extra day and do so, it would be great if you rented a car - even if only for the one day. And - while you're there - check out Truckee just north of north lake tahoe. My favorite place on earth - the place I consider home.

Mumzie,

Is the Atlantis the same hotel as the Hilton? I thought the Hilton was a few miles away from the downtown area and we had to use a shuttle when we stayed there years ago. Reason I ask is because I remember we had some problem with our room prices also, something like $5 extra being added on because we were there for the ABC. I seem to recall our captain argued with them and finally told them we were not there for the ABC so we got a cheaper rate.

I am sorry to hear you didn't enjoy the Atlantis. As I stated above, we only visited. We didn't stay there. We, the wife and I, were very happy at the Peppermill. I to would also recommend taking a day and going to Lake Tahoe. It is an awesome experience. I have stayed at the Sands Regency in the past and it was okay for an older hotel. But I liked the modern look of the Peppermill and all of their amenities. Plus, their people were very polite and helpful.

My daughter stayed at Fitzgeralds. It was cheap, respectable room, and across from the Stadium.

Flying with bowling equipment depends on who you are flying with. Southwest just modified their cheked baggage to allow 3 free with a max of 70lbs each. The reservation person also told me you get an additional bowling bag that does not count against the 3 bag count. So you could, according to her, take 4 3-ball bags and carry-on your luggage if you travel light.

I'm heading to Reno in October and will be staying at Circus Circus. I'm probably just taking my 4 ball roller and leaving the other 2 balls home.

My last trip to Reno was pretty good. We stayed at Circus Circus, and was good. The group that I went with, they all wanted to stay somewhere else, and had to pay more, dont see why when C.C. was cheaper, and very well maintained. I dont plan on bowling the BJ's, but that would be the only reason to have a rental car, unless you want to go to Tahoe.

And depending where you live, I think Southwest is the best way to fly there. From what I was told, they are very good with allowing 3 ball bags, and not really having to worry about the weight of them.

This will be my 4th ABC's in Reno and I've stayed the 1st time at the Hilton, with rental car and after 5 days, had to put a 1/4 tank of gas in, so it didn't get much use. 2nd time at Sands Regency, I thought was a dump, only sleep there and that was that. No rental car needed. Last time was at CircusCircus, which was nice but had to take a tram to the sleeping accomendations, bowling stadium was in walking distance, took a city bus to the Hilton for the Bowlers Journal, with there own center inside and the great Johnny Rockets (my favorite). This was a nice place and location, but too many kids running around. Next time, I'm thinking of, either Silver Legacy or the 3rd connecting hotel (can't remember the name off hand) or I'm thinking of even trying the Peppermill. Most of the bigger and nicer hotel/casino all have shuttle service so a rental car isn't necessary unless there is some sightseeing involved. Good Luck!

The three connecting hotels are El Dorado, Silver Legacy, and Circus Circus.

Fitzgeralds is an excellent value, and right across the street from the stadium. However be sure to ask for a room on the NON TRAIN side of the building!

The Atlantis is on South Virginia, about 2-3 miles south of the stadium.
The Reno Hilton is east of the stadium, on Glendale/2nd street.

If you fake it, you can get shuttles from all the big hotels to the stadium, and back again, and the drivers KNOW they have to load bowling equipment. So, if you wanted to, you could take a shuttle from the Peppermill to the stadium, and then catch the return shuttle to the Hilton. (and vice versa...)

John Asquaga's Nugget in Sparks is also a very nice hotel. I used to go to special events there all the time. My office used to be right behind it. I don't know how their rates compare, however.

The Eldorado Buffet is still the best - but the Hilton was remodeling theirs in June - it has always been pretty good, and I think they're about to make it better.

If you want to stay a few miles out, Boomtown in Verdi is about 12 miles west, and is supposedly a good deal. Never seen the rooms there. From now on, since we bought a travel trailer, we'll probably either stay there, or at the Hilton.

Regarding shipping equipment -
I just shipped 4 balls in a box from Portland to Vegas - it cost me $22. Well worth it, just to not risk the airlines losing my equipment!

I agree! The information is quite helpful. My husband and I will be in Reno for the first time at the beginning of October for the National Mixed Championships. We're staying at the Eldorado. I'll let you know what I think of it when we get home.
