reno update
« on: March 24, 2010, 02:11:28 AM »
Just in case anyone cares, here's one league hack's review of the lanes this year.

Team: Plenty of oil up front, plenty of friction in back. I threw my Virtual Gravity with 5 inch pin down with fresh 2000 surface. Played straight up 7 and had a good look. Struggled a bit with the glare from the scoreboard the first half game, got comfortable towards the end of game 1, throwing a 4 bagger after an early open for 215. Had a bit of carry down, so I shaded my feet a little bit right, keeping my target at 7 for game 2 – concentrating on not grabbing it at the bottom. I proceeded to throw the 10 best shots of my life and started with the front 10. Got up for the 11th shot, and in my 3rd step, a lane on the pair to my left gets turned off to return a ball or something. I was able to stop my approach, but lost my comfort level and couldn’t regroup throwing an 8 count and getting 1 for 287. Game 3 was a bundle of nerves and being stubborn. I should have moved in with a ball that got down the lane further, but just couldn’t get myself to change balls after throwing a 280 game. Finally switched to a Hy-Road after a split in the 8th, but couldn’t catch a double and shot 182 with 1 open for 684. Team had 2989.

Doubles: Came in early to find that for the 3rd consecutive year we had 4 classified teams throwing plastic all over our doubles and singles lanes. Can’t tell you how excited that made us feel. Anyhow – bad ball choices and bad angles led to a 163 start in doubles. I decided to throw a Hy-Road which doesn’t react like anything else in my bag and move in to 20 at the arrows trying to get it right of the last tracer at the break point. Turned out to be the right choice as I went 233 and 259 to salvage 655. Partner had a clean 638 which gave us a respectable 1293.

Singles: Moved a couple right after watching our cross guys struggle to get it to hook – whoops – ball sparked at the arrows and went dead left. Another big step left, grind out 199-223 to start singles, just kept chasing it left. Should have just kept doing that, but I’m not very comfortable left of 25 so I tried balling down and staying around 20 in game 3. Strike, split, strike, split, double, split to finish singles with a hugely disappointing 158 and 1919 all events. My highest all events ever, but somehow disappointing as I thought with my look and the way I was throwing the ball that I had a chance to do something really really special.

Some other highlights - watching Rob Bailey's team take over the lead, seeing Shannon Pluhowsky take over the all events. WOW does she throw it well.

Good luck to all who are going - happy to answer any questions.

nice bowling Rob and wonderful information. understand about being frustrated on some moves or splits, but very nice bowling anyways!! you stated you used a a 5" pin down VG & a Hyroad. how are those two nuggets drilled? both pin down?

Good bowling Rob!  Not the worst outing at Natl's I'd venture.

Thanks, guys - still wish I didn't have one bad game every set.

dballz - both pieces are pin down. The Virtual is a 5 inch pin with the mass bias on my VAL 3 inches from my PAP. I have very little axis tilt. I actual have 2 HyRoads, the one I went to in minors is a layout I have never tried before - the pin is below my middle finger (about 5.5 inches from PAP) with the CG to the right and above my thumb and a giant weight hole. Sorry I don't have the actual drilling angles.

Hope this helps.

Good bowling.  Did you find more backend than last year or the same ?  I have talked to a few guys who just came back and they said the lanes played just like last year, but if you read the hammer booth comments, they said the backends were really stronger than last year.  I'm just curious because I am planning on bringing a ROF (surface 800) and 2 missions (different surface and layout), but not sure if I should bring my hyroad or on onyx vibe.  Any suggestions
?  Thanks

hey Rob, thanks for the info. no biggie on the angles. i was just curious as to pins and mb locations.

Stan, it sounds like Rob did well with his Hyroad, but i am also hoping that people suggest an Onyx. i am drilling one up before i go out. just not sure on what layout i want to do. thinking of a 50* x 5", pin up. maybe alter the surface to 1-2k, with a tad bit of polish.

I can tell you gentelmen this, the Onyx is a great ball. I have two in my arsenal, and both almost made it out to nationals again this year. I keep one pin down with a dusty 2000 abralon surface, and I keep the pin up one at box. Those two are very, very useable pieces. Just determine when and how you think you want to use them, and you will not be disappointed.

Gene, I have to agree.  I feel the Onyx is the sleeper ball of the year.  Mine is drilled with pin down and I use the white scotch bright pads, roughly 1000 grit (close to the 2000 abralon).  This ball is amazing and will probably make the trip to Reno.  Of course, that would mean my hyroad stays home unless I take 5 balls.

Solid effort Rob.  I'd take that in team right now if you'd give it to me. Tough break on the 11th shot though!!!

And tough having the plastic balls in front of you for minors -- surprised you did that well.

Rob_mil - What ball was Shannon using when you saw her? I know on TV she has been using the original Jigsaw quite frequently. Just wondering if she was using that or the new Jigsaw Corner or something different. Thanks.

She was playing what looked to me like up 5, we were a couple pairs over so it was hard to see exactly.

Thanks Riggs - not much you can do about the draw until everything is on fresh. But it sure would be nice to just once see some teams throwing chalk at 8 on our pair, though... last couple years have been frustrating. Good luck!
