Speaking of booths, my Dynothane booth experience
« on: March 08, 2004, 07:33:07 PM »
After reading the Storm booth thread I thought I'd post my little experience and what I learned from it.

I got an orange leather heel for my ABS Tour Ultras from Buddie's over the internet.  It had a little groove in the heel and it seemed defective to me, but probably usable.  I didn't have enough time to send it back before Reno.  So, I took it to the Dynothane booth to exchange it.  With the many orange leather heels they had I noticed about half had little grooves/impressions in them (maybe from shipping?).  I wanted to swap mine for a good looking one.  I was honest with the older gentleman manning the booth there and told him I just got it on the internet, but was hoping he could give me a little piece of mind and exchange it.  I showed him the similar grooves on his stock, but since I didn't buy it from him, he still would not exchange it.  I was pretty shocked and explained since he was representing Dynothane, I thought this would be a simple thing to do for me.  He said it's his own stock with no backing from the company, and would not exchange it for me.  I was pretty peeved.

So, I learned that the booths were staffed by independent guys, not ball company reps.  But still at a national tourney like that I would think the ball companies would keep a better watch at who is representing their products.  My teammate was going to fork over the $169 for Tour Ultras there, but after my experience he passed.  He'll still get the shoes, but thru Buddies' where he'll also save $20 even after shipping.  Dynothane will get the sale, but the independent guy at the nationals booth will not.

Glad you learned that that booth is not operated by Dyno-Thane, but just be someone selling Dyno-Thane brand products. I wonder if the Storm booth is the same. I suspect so, otherwise, they would certainly be selling their products at less than retail.

At the Syracuse ABCs (1999 ?) most booths had significant discounts, implying there were repesented by the actual company. As the years went on, the prices went up and I again suspect the booths were more and more operated by independent dealers and not the actual bowling ball manufacturer, except for possibly Brunswick, and, possibly Ebonite. Both, in so far as I could see, had people that were really helpful, and courteous.

I can certainly understand why the D/T booth operator did not want to exchange your sole: he'd be giving you a good one in exchange for a not so good that he may never be able to sell.

When i was at reno the man at the storm booth said that he was a storm rep that used to work drilling balls on the womens tour for storm, and he said that every year he works the ABC'S, but when i was there i thought the prices were an outrage, due to comparasion on the internet.

Even when i was talking to the guy about a ball he was trying to pressure me into buying it, it was a reloaded, then when i told him i didnt want to buy any more bowling balls because i just bought a reloaded he just stop talking to me and went on doing something else.  And all i was there for was to just get some info about drilling patterns and stuff like that.

I would think that these people that are operating the booths should be more a a fellow bowler/proshop person not a sales men.  I do understand that they are trying to make some money also, but why not just help out some too.

Independant operators yes and no. Some of the manufatcurers call in specific people for drilling and or selling who have some impressive resummee's. Carol Norman is usually at Storm's. Last year their was also a verry very large gentleman also at the storm booth who was a tour rep for many years (I believe with Hammer) The driller for Ebonite has been talked about as one of the best drillers around. (Billy Callahan?)
As far as the swaping of product. Remember he does not know you from spit and he must be leary of any deals taking something in a return. I sympathize with your thought but do recognize his position as a valid business option.

I took my free Dyno-Thane tote with me to Reno. One of the rings that hold the shoulder strap was loose and the shoulder strap kept unsnapping.I mentioned this to the older gentleman at the Dyno booth and he said bring it by.Later I brought the bag to the booth but he was drilling a ball so I started to leave. He happened to look up and see me.He stopped drilling the ball and said I see you brought the bag let's have a look.He said easy fix but my channel locks are in my car.He went back to the drill press, shut it off closed the door and ran out to his car for the channel locks. He came back and repaired the bag and wished me good luck in my squad.

I had a good set that afternoon and a couple of guys asked advice.I told them Dyno-Thane had good prices on the Vendetta and it would be my choice if I needed a different look. The guy made two sales from a no sale and I bought a Dyno-Thane shirt the next day with some of my bracket money.
