Question about using old average at Open Championship

Have a friend that wants to bowl with us in Reno this year but he hasn't bowled in almost 4 years but he does have an average from 2009. Would he be able to use that average this year in Reno or would he have to use the 220 average that's stated in the rules?

I would ask the message boards at bowl.com before going any further....or better yet email USBC with the question.  There is a lot of knowledge on these boards but I wouldn't trust anyone but the authority on that one.

I don't know the answer. Although I would guess a 4 year old average would not be good enough.

But since it is a scratch event the only difference is which division does he bowls in. Depending on your team average, his doubles partners average, and of course for singles it may not matter.

Classified Team- Five USBC members whose combined average does not exceed 900.

Classified Doubles- Combined average does not exceed 360.

Classified Singles/All-Events- Average does not exceed180.

Regular Team- Five USBC members whose combined average is above 900.

Regular Doubles- Combined average above 360.

Regular Singles/All-Events- Average above 180.

He would fall into the classified division, he carries like a 155 ave. but I think his partner has about a 200 average.

Double check, but I believe the answer is no.  I think you can use the previous season average, if you hadn't established one in the current season.  Beyond that you are bowling scratch.

I'm in the same boat...  Going to try to sub in a sanctioned league for a few weeks to get an established average...

I could be wrong, but I thought it had to be a Jan 1 average.  I'm not the expert, so don't take my word for it.

Check the entry form for average rules.  Fairly certain that a 4 year old average will not be accepted.
