Stuck on the fresh for doubles and singles
« on: April 14, 2011, 11:15:53 PM »
So we bowled this past weekend and had the 11:30 pm doubles and singles shift. We come out from the squad room and we are on the last 3 pairs being used, 43-48, they are fresh. But just 5 pairs to our left there are three empty pairs that were bowled on the prior team shift, why would they not use those and put bowlers on the fresh? Cleary about everyone wants to bowl on a little of the burn. I ask the gentleman from our squad room and his answer was "I really don't know."" Maybe it would have caused some confusion to move your names to the other pairs." Confusion, why weren't they being used to begin with? Any ideas from anyone?

I don't believe that "clearly everyone wants to play on a little of the burn" since not every pair will be broken down the same.  Bowl after a bunch of spray and prayers using dull equipment and you'll never have a consistent shot.  Personally I'd rather have fresh oil than be at the mercy of how random people break down lanes.  There's a lot more really average bowlers out there than Eagle quality competitors.

Telling it like it is.

Sure seems to me that the majority of the scores always seem to be higher in the doubles and singles events. Which would sure lead me to believe that once they have been broken down a little that it seems to get better. Always has for me. Maybe I'm in the minority. Still back to my original question, why would they leave 3 empty pairs in the middle of the house that had been used in the team squad empty and use 3 fresh pairs instead? 1 of those pairs had a loaded team on it. Maybe didn't want someone to use that pair because of a different condition?

Aren't lanes assigned to you and your team back when you sign up before the tournament starts?  I would guess 43-48 are the lanes that were assigned to you and the teams that were assigned the open lanes to your left backed out or possibly still at the black jack table

Yes they are assigned. They had our dates wrong when we checked in. Had us bowling on sun and mon and not sat and sun. Their mistake. Still doesnt answer why those 3 pairs set empty in the middle of a squad. Those were the only 3 not being used. Im sure usbc spent countless dollars and manpower to come up with a reason not to use those lanes.

Depends......would you rather bowl on fresh or a pair that has had 10 people chucking plastic and spraying the ball everywhere?

I would rather bowl on what the rest of the shift is bowling on, that seems pretty reasonable to me. Bowling on a pair that had lets say a classified team on it is a chance you take. But bowling on fresh because they decided to not use certain pairs for whatever reason just doesnt make alot of sense. I've followed pairs that had plastics going down it, still better than the fresh. Why is it that I'm the only one who thinks it seems odd that they had those team pairs sitting empty. Never seen it before at Nationals, and I've gone for 14yrs straight.

I saw empty pairs last year to the left of pairs we were on.  However, it would not have made a difference because it was the 7AM squad and every pair is on the fresh.

I do see your point about bowling on the burn.  Some people's games are better equipped for the burn.  Stu Williams said on xtraframe that he bowls better on the burn compared to the fresh  His game needs it.  Nothing wrong with that.  Especially on the fresh where you have only four guys on a pair compared to ten in team it helps to have some burn especially on a flat shot.

i can't answer as to why those pairs were vacant, but i agree with you 100% with you wanting to bowl on "broken down" lane conditions. otherwise everybody would be looking for 7a.m. doubles. i'd bet a lot of money that is the least popular squad, not mainly because of the time. furthermore, how many eagles have you seen come out of bowlers rolling on fresh for team, then fresh for s's & d's.

when these conditions are properly worn in, they become very easy. that's when you see the spikes in scores.

look at how many times you see a sub-par peformance in the team event, then somebody whacks them the next day because they drew a good pair.

hopefully this post settles that argument.

For sure -- some day hopefully EVERY squad will be on fresh oil!

I would take fresh over what we had last year -- 4 Classified teams shooting 2,300 ... ended up with 9,600 team all-events. Contrast that with the year before when we had "perfect" cross of decent track players in front of us and shot 10,300.

And I might rather have fresh this year anyway considering what the pattern appears to be on the fresh. Most of the top level players bowl on a burn squad and so far team scores are pretty high while minors leaders are just 1,447, 814 and 2,177 -- relatively low when compared to 3,439 in team.

Still trying to get my arms around that contrast. Tells me managing the fresh is VERY key.

Riggs knows me and I vouch for what he says.

I already bowled in Reno this year.

Had 2 lefties in front of us that did us no favors.

1 threw charcoal up 6-8 and the other sprayed charcoal and polished inside of 10.

Me and my lefty doubles partner found a way to throw darts up 8 to shoot a respectable 1275.

Flipped over to singles and figured to have a better reaction than doubles(no lefties in front of us).

The shot was better but no hold in and hang out.

You are at the mercy of what bowls in front of you big time.

Almost all things are better when they come from Texas.Except maybe the USBC. LOL
free agency it is until i get a better offer.   LMAO

I'm well aware of you are at the mercy of who crosses in front of you. I"m saying I would rather take my chances with that then be put on fresh after a team squad when they leave 3 pairs empty that were bowled on in the team event. My complaint is that all of our doubles and singles squad should have been on a little burn if they would have used all the lanes that the 8:30 team shift used. Only our 3 pairs of doubles and singles were put on the fresh. The question is why not put us on the 3 pairs that they let sit empty from the previous team squad.

if you would have known that early enough, couldn't you have requested a pair change like what a team from oregon did a few years ago? i believe they did that for the team event to bowl unopposed & i think they won the team event? correct me if i'm wrong.

Now, if I read your post correctly, everyone was on the burn and that three pairs that were on the fresh were not assigned.  I think that's fair because everyone is bowling on the same burn and no has an "advantage" by being on the fresh.
