There was a rumor circulating out in Reno when we were there (two weeks ago) that the projected World Bowling Stadium is going to still be built. Does anyone know for fact that this is true and not speculation?

I tried online and all I find are the original links and articles for when they announced this back in 2007 and 2008.

I am hoping as I have 15 month old and it would nice in the future to plan family get aways every third year at Disney.

Reno is too unappealing for my liking to take my wife and children along for  future trips.

From Bowl.com

The United States Bowling Congress has reached an agreement to bring the 2011 USBC Open Championships to the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, Nev.

The 2011 Open Championships was originally scheduled to be held in Osceola County, Fla., at a new 100-lane bowling facility in the ESPN Wide World of Sports complex on land made available by Walt Disney World. The current credit market delayed funding for a key third party involved with the construction project, jeopardizing the timeline for completion.

With the Open Championships now set to be held at the National Bowling Stadium in 2010 and 2011, USBC and the Reno-Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority are teaming up to provide unprecedented exciting incentives for bowlers who attend both tournaments. At the 2011 Open Championships:

Every day, one bowler will win a high performance bowling ball.
Every five weeks, one team captain will win a new car or truck.
Team captains bringing four or more teams will receive a VIP stay complete with limo service and luxury hotel accommodations.

To be eligible for the incentive program, participation in both the 2010 and 2011 Open Championships is required.

"This agreement ensures the Open Championships has a first rate venue for 2011 and our partners in Reno stepped up to make it happen," said USBC Vice President of Tournaments and Events Jack Mordini. "The numbers show that the bowlers enjoy going to Reno and our relationship has been a great one over the years. With these new incentives, USBC bowlers will have a better chance at winning big in Reno than ever before."

The RSCVA, along with partner hotels, plan to develop additional unique benefit packages for USBC bowlers in the months ahead.

"We are extremely pleased to have been selected as the host city for the 2011 USBC Open Championships," said RSCVA President and Chief Executive Officer Ellen Oppenheim. "We are looking forward to opening our doors and providing an unparalleled experience for championship participants."

USBC remains optimistic that the Osceola County facility will open by 2012, which means the 2013 USBC Women's Championship would be the first USBC event held there.

"The impact of the credit crisis continues to be felt across the country," said USBC Chief Operating Officer Kevin Dornberger. "We recognize our members on the East Coast would like to see the Open Championships closer to home. The project in the Orlando area may not be ready in 2011, but we are committed to seeing an arena for bowling in this ideal location."

As the Open Championships continues to grow, fewer cities have large enough venues available to host the event. The Open Championships requires 100,000 square feet of convention center floor space for seven consecutive months.

"USBC has talked with nearly every potential host city in the eastern portion of the country," Mordini said. "City leaders are increasingly cautious about booking one event for seven months straight, even one with a proven track record of success like the Open Championships."

The USBC Open Championships is the largest participatory sporting event in the world with nearly 85,000 athletes competing during a 140-day stretch from late February through early July. The Open Championships creates an estimated $100-million impact for the local economy of the host city.

I don't know about that, but walking the gauntlet of street beggars is starting to get old. We walked to the McDonalds across from the Legacy for breakfast a couple of mornings. It gets old getting drilled $15-20 for breakfast every day. I got hit by every panhandler in North America both days.

I get homelessness, it sucks to be in that situation. We are all one lay off or expensive medical stay from it potentially happening. But damn, I am there for a break from the world for a day or two and to do something I like.

I remember a friend of mine offering to go in to get a couple of items off the dollar menu for a guy using the "change for food" gimmick and getting cussed out by the bum for offering.

And some of the richest.....when I lived out there in the early 2000's, one of the news stations did an expose on some of them. It appears that some of the "bums" were actually middle-class workers who get dressed up in rags on weekends and go out and panhandle for extra money. Because of the large tourist industry there, they were making hundreds of dollars every weekend. I have never given money to anyone begging on the street since I saw that....just never know.

I saw a thing on the news about that as well. One guy was making more then 40k a year begging on the weekends, not including his weekday job. He said it''s more of an art then anything, kind of like being a used car salesman.

Is the World Bowling Stadium or w/e just going to be a huge bowling center?

This is why the casinos on the strip here in Las Vegas aggressively keep panhandlers away.

We all have our own experiences with panhandlers, but having lived and travelled to most of the major cities in the U.S., I have to say the worst experience I had was in Atlanta. Walking the half mile from my hotel to the conference center was a maze of pretty much constant aggressive begging. Didn't leave a good impression of Atlanta for me.

Given the state of the economy, I have a lot of doubt that the Olando facility will ever be built.  Nonetheless, USBC had better find some new venues because I think people are getting tired of Reno.  That and the expense to get to Reno is IMO what's hurting entries.

I think there are a lot of reasons entries are down. It's not so much Reno this year, as this was the scheduled year for Reno. It's the back-to-back Reno trips that people are unhappy with. Add that on top of the economic situation in the US (well the world actually) being he worst it has been since the Great Depression, people are out of work and/or just don't have the disposable income they had 3 years ago when the Open was last in Reno. Then add in the travel costs, which are higher for just about everyone that can't drive to Reno (one of the things I miss about living in Northern California) since most airlines don't offer any cheap fares. It all adds up to one big steaming pile of reduced entries. The USBC did what it had to do with both Wichita and Orlando falling through for 2011. No city with a convention center big enough could have opened up it's 2011 schedule for as long as the USBC needs it at that late a date. Reno was the only option.
