Title: The Hammer Booth
Post by: The_Hammer_Booth on February 18, 2010, 04:03:34 PM
Hello future bowlers of the 2010 USBC Open in Reno. We at the Hammer Booth just wanted to take this opportunity to extend our knowledge and customer service to anyone who may need or want it. We will frequently be on here to answer any questions as well as provide information as to what seems to be rolling good on the lanes. With that said, feel free to send me a PM or post on here to ask anything that we may not answer or comment on.

This year we will also have a Facebook page where we will be posting pictures, upcoming sales as well as scores from some of our bowlers. Feel free to add us, you can find us under The Hammer Booth on Facebook or follow this link:

Look forward to hearing from all of you and thank you for your support.

With the first day in the books here is a little insight as to what we saw on the lanes today:

What we can see after first game is you are looking for a smooth reaction off the back end for control and looks like if you can get the ball between the 9th and 7th board at back tracer it is money.

As the next few days go on we will have a better idea.

As for balls we are thinking the Jacked and the Widow Nasty will be best for team event. Once again it is early and we will know more as the tournament continues.

How many people did you see using the Jigsaw Corner and with what kind of results? Having a little trouble with mine. Too strong in 1 house and a little weak in the other. I have it drilled for long and smooth. What kind of change would you recommend? LMK

We have seen a few (it is only day 1) and they look pretty good on the fresh. As I said earlier you are looking for a smoother ball reaction that is smooth off the break point.

As far as your Corner goes would have to take a look at the drilling and find out exactly what you mean. If we had to change anything we would probably suggest changing the surface for each house first and then if that doesn't work change the drilling.

Looks to be about the same, can play a little further out but need to control the break point. Nothing jerky off the spot. It's the stadium, left side is always nice

Our first thoughts are still holding true. The backends are really moving this year so you will need something that doesn't jump when it sees friction. Looks like you can play in as well, but it isn't as friendly as going up the outside to start.

So what type of drill patterns are you guys looking at then???  Stronger mb placements or weaker?  Stronger pin or weaker??

Thanks for any input

RC - For drillings we are thinking shorter pins with stronger balls that are just smooth and arcing. Right now what we think will work best is the Sting, Nasty, Jacked and Jigsaw Corner. Jigsaw corner more for people with less hand. For the Sting the MB at about 65-80 degrees to decrease the flare and smooth it out. Hope this answers your question, if you have anymore feel free to ask me.

Jbuzz - Right now we have a red Jacked that was the original batch color before they changed it to purple. We also have a overseas Widow Spare that is red/black. We might be getting a couple others in soon, not positive yet. If you check out our Facebook Fan Page (The Hammer Booth) you can see the balls we currently have as well as any future balls that come in.

Getoffme - I think your idea for the Black Widow Sting is a great idea for the team event to start. Once again it all depends on your speed and rev rate, but from what we have seen it looks like this is a safe bet.

We want to know the bowler's ideas for shirts. We at the booth are always looking to provide what the customers want so we decided to take a poll as to what shirts people would like to see. Feel free to look on http://www.hammerstuff.com/ for ideas or don't hold back on creating something unique. We will do our best to provide a shirt that is the same or similar to some of the shirts submitted. We also understand the demand for the Gemini's and we are working on them, but as of right now they are a bit high in price. If you would please display your interest in them still so we can get a rough idea of the demand out there for them. Thank you in advance.

I know it is still early, but has anyone has any success with the Jigsaw Corner out there?

I am a little concerned when I read some of the reviews that you want a ball that is smoother off the spot, as the Corner is designed to be more angular, and if that will cause too much over/under at the breakpoint.

Thanks for all your help.

The Jigsaw Corner has been very successful for bowlers out here. Two days ago we drilled one of a guy who shot 690 in team. As long as it isn't drilled too angular off the spot it has been good. It allows you to get more area if you aren't a high rev player. If you are a high rev player it might not be the ideal choice. I hope this answers your question. If you have anymore feel free to ask

Thanks for the insight. I guess my next question is where is the cutoff for a "high-rev" player, LOL? I have been told by coaches my rev rate is about 390-400, would that be considered high? I think of myself more of a tweener, personally.

When you say "shorter pins" Do you mean closer to the PAP? or pin in balls? Just looking for clarification.

For this "smooth" ball reaction, where would the MB be placed? More towards the track or towards the VAL?

last Sunday i bowled on the usbc pattern, but was on a different lane surface. i was able to play around 10-8 for the first game, using a Sauce: 70* x 4", pin up. the x-hole is on VAL above my pap to decrease flare. surface was 500 / 4k
as long as i stayed firm it gave me a nice reaction. unfortunately we had to move pairs for the tourney and thus you see how important it is following a group who plays them correctly.

did see some guys at end of day using pearls and slow looping it. not sure what layouts were, but looked like something that picked up in midlane and rolled strong for them. skid/flip didn't have as good as carry inside.
Title: Re: The Hammer Booth
Post by: LoftnessMonster on March 10, 2010, 09:16:01 AM
What other pin and m/b combos are working as the pattern deteriorates?
Title: Re: The Hammer Booth
Post by: The_Hammer_Booth on March 10, 2010, 09:58:38 AM
As the pattern breaks down it seems like you have to make a huge move in. Looks like 13, 14, and 15 are a trap area where you have to be perfect. Once you get past that area seems to be a much better reaction and carry percentage. Once you get in weaker pins and stronger mass bias'' seem to be working. The guy who took over the singles lead a couple days ago and put up the first 300 was using a toxic (everyone knows how that ball rolled). Hope this answers your question

What layouts/surface preps are working for the higher rev rate guys? Im heading out that way in June, and i'm still undecided about what pieces to bring with me.

My lineup is in my profile, but looks like this: Virtual Gravity pin 4" from pap, no hole and 2000 abralon with light polish, a Momentum swing 5" x 3" no hole at 4000 abralon no polish, Dynamo x2 6" x 5" no hole 2000 polish, and a Loud Noize 4"x4", 1/2" hole on VAL in thumb quadrant 4000 abralon with polish.

What ya think?

How are Onyx Vibes matching up out there?  I have one drilled pin over and just to the right of my ring, CG on midline stacked with the surface at 2000 and I am bringing a Emerald Vibe, same drilling but polished.  Also a Magic, Magic Touch, Black Widow Killer and Jigsaw....its my first Nationals so I want to be prepared.  I consider myself a tweener with go revs and medium speed.

Thanx for your input and I will definitely be over to the booth.

For the high rev rate players you are just looking for balls that get through the fronts and don't make a huge u-turn in the back. Just more controlled layouts to counter act your hand.

Jarrett I think you will be set. The onyx should be a good match up for you. That ball has looked good so far. Same thing no matter how you throw it you need something smooth and continuous.

I also would like to thank the Hammer booth for posting here. Its good to see someone take the time to let us that have not gone yet know what might work and not work.

Seems there is one company who will not be named, that doesn't seem to care about the bowlers by the absence of not having someone post on this board.

Witnessed some good bowling as of late. Last night watched a team take the lead. They shot 3200 using balls that just laid off and didn't overreact in the back (3 missions were being used). They started out playing the lanes really straight burning up a spot and came out the gate with 1120.

Also the doubles lead was taken over at 1421. The two of them picked up our Jacked/Psycho combo to help propel them to the lead.

There are some great scores being posted and I'm sure many more to come.

Question Hammer Booth,

What do you guys consider a smooth reacting layout?  For a right hander would it be like drilling a ball with the pin up and to the right of the ring finger like maybe 2 inches away from the fingers and then the mass bias to the left of the thumb hole?  I know it depends on your PAP.  But would that be a generally the idea?  My PAP is 5 1/2 inches to the right and 3/4 up.  Don't know if that might help a little.  Do you guys recommend using an asymmetrical ball or symmetrical?
Title: Re: The Hammer Booth
Post by: The_Hammer_Booth on March 24, 2010, 11:00:39 AM
That would be what we consider a smoother reacting ball. We actually have been doing that layout for people with a little more hand and has been working out really well on the team event. In our line the asymmetric balls (Widow Series) tend to have a little more pop in the back so they have been working pretty good when the fronts start to go. The Jacked has been rolling really good on the fresh for people with some hand as long as you have some surface on it. So if you were to drill up a couple balls might want to go with the Jacked, Sting and Nasty just to give yourself some options. Hope this helps and if you have anymore questions just let us know. We will be more than glad to help you

Hammer Booth,

Thanks for the help.  You said in your reply to make sure you have some surface.  For the jacked I know the oob is 1000 grit factory finish...would that be good or should it go down to like 500 grit abralon?  I have about a 375 - 400 rev rate when I went to kegel.  High track player.

Also what inch pin do you recommend?  2 inch pin or 3 inch pin?  Not pin to pap but the length of the pin.

Also...I've been seeing some other reviews of the lanes and there are quite a few players using layouts with the pin down and mass bias at 65-80 degrees...how is this compared to drilling something pin up and out and mass bias left of thumb hole?
Title: Re: The Hammer Booth
Post by: The_Hammer_Booth on March 24, 2010, 01:37:48 PM
1000 should be plenty dull enough for you if you get on it that much and are pretty up the back. Pin down will get it to start up a little earlier is all. This would be another option for balls that have a little more pop in the back (something pearl). Only thing with the pin down is when you start having to move in they pretty much have to go right back in the bag.

Hammer Booth,
Was thinking of bringing a black widow bite and a cherry vibe because we bowl minors at 11:40 am,and picking up another ball from you when I get there at the end of April.High track player with med revs 14 to 15mph.How does this sound or do you think the vibe will be 2 weak?
Thanks Tim
Title: Re: The Hammer Booth
Post by: The_Hammer_Booth on March 24, 2010, 03:53:57 PM
Tim,

We do not think the Cherry will be too weak, there is always less oil during s/d and having that shift you will definitely see more friction because at best it will be second shift, but will most likely be 3rd shift. What ball are you thinking about getting when you get out here?

Our take on Shady $ Co. lane play to take the team event lead. Obviously there was no issues game 2 and 3, that was some great bowling to watch. However, we are sure game 1 was not the start they were looking for. It really wasn't that bad of a game, 967 is a pretty solid start for most teams out here. What we watched from high above in the rafters (mainly because the stands were packed) was what appeared to be a move left by everyone around the 4th frame. During practice and the first 3 frames every was around 6-8 at the arrows, then after that, they got into around 12-13 area. They continued to grind the rest of the game in there, pretty much having to be perfect to strike. Eventually toward the end of the game a few had moved back right and some seemed to have much better ball reaction. We think that they moved in too fast and needed to stay further right a little longer and then could have probably started the strike-a-thon toward the end of game 1 instead of frame 4 or 5 of game 2. Take this for what you would like, but it was what we talked about in the booth with each other and came up with as to what happened game 1. Take nothing away from their great bowling, what they did was fun to watch. Would also like to say Mike Shady and Marc McDowell are a couple of nice guys and it was a pleasure to chat and do their ball surfacing for them. Once again nice bowling guys.

I was out there this past weekend, so I got to see the Peach Vibe up close. Uh, who is the color blind SOB at Hammer who's calling that ball peach? That thing is a spitting image of the old Pink Hammer! The only peach ball in the Hammer lineup is the Psycho, which Hammer said was orange! lol In any event, make plans to visit the booth while you guys are out there. There's lots of good stuff. I just wish the pink, oops, meant peach, was still available in 15. Oh well.

New Doubles Leaders:

http://www.bowl.com/news/xmlburner.jsp?xa=./webapps/ROOT/news/main/data/040510VermilyeaandMersch.xml

Drilled Jeff the Black Widow Sting and Onyx Vibe and that is all he used for both the Bowler's Journal and the Open.

Here are the layouts and surface: For the Sting it was 30 x 4 x 50 and the Onyx was 40 x 3 1/2x 20. In team the surface on the Sting was box and it was a little too strong and when he went to the Onyx he had the world. The Onyx was at 500/2000. For doubles and singles we put the Sting on 4000 pads for 5 minutes and was so much better and redid the Onyx at 500/2000

Questions on the onyx you drilled for Jeff, 40 x 31/2 x 20 Where did the pin end up after drilling?, What top weight ball did you start with?, Did it require a weight hole?, and if so, where did you place it? Above PAP, Below PAP, or on PAP?. When you prepared the surface, did you just use 500 from the Box finish and then use 2000, or did you take the ball down lower to start?
Title: Re: The Hammer Booth
Post by: The_Hammer_Booth on April 09, 2010, 11:05:15 AM
On the onyx pin ended up being to the left of his ring finger, cg was down, don't remember the top weight. The hole was down and on his VAL. The 500/2000 was box, then 500 for 3 minute then 2000 for 3 minutes.

How will my Faball (Black) Hammer work out there you think? Have done well in the past.
Title: Re: The Hammer Booth
Post by: The_Hammer_Booth on May 02, 2010, 12:19:42 PM
It all just depends on how you play them, if you try to hook the lane with it, I doubt it will work too good. If you play them straighter you might have some success. The lanes aren't too different from the past and there is a little more backend this year

What kind of reaction will a BW Danger have?  any specs?
Title: Re: The Hammer Booth
Post by: The_Hammer_Booth on May 14, 2010, 11:48:13 PM
I have my Danger drilled exactly like my Sting and it is about 5-6 boards stronger off the spot. It has the Gas Mask core inside it with a stronger cover.

That's quite a bit stronger off the spot?  Is that like a Jigsaw Corner as far as backend reaction?
Title: Re: The Hammer Booth
Post by: The_Hammer_Booth on May 15, 2010, 12:43:26 AM
I would say it is similar just a little cleaner through the front than the Corner. The Corner needs a lot of oil in the heads in order for it to work, where the Danger seems to get through the fronts easier

I wanted to say Shawn in the booth is a class young man and knows what he is talking about when it comes to what works on the lanes. He took care of me on surface on my stuff even though it was Storm.lol

Thanks

Hello Gentlemen,
Are you expecting anything else coming special at this point? I am will be out to Reno next week and wanted to see if you had anything of note coming in. Also any deals going on at this time you can make us aware of? I'll make sure I stop to say Hi at least. May have to pick up a shirt or two since I have a few Hammer balls in my bag now, really like my Jigsaw Corner and Onyx Vibe. My Corner is polished though and makes a nice step down from my Bounty Hunter, thinking it might see the light of day near the end of team and to start D/S. Thanks for taking the time and everything you done in this thread.

Sorry for the delayed response been busy here. As of right now we aren't expecting anything special to come in, i.e. overseas. What we really have on sale right now are bags and a few balls i.e. Acids. Look forward to meeting you and travel safe

The 2 ball totes we have are buy 1 get 1 free for $29.95, but all we have left are the red spider totes. We do not have any of the triple totes in stock. Was there a specific shirt style you like while you were there? We have a pretty good variety,
Holloway: Orange/White and Black/Orange
Sport Tek: Purple/White, Green/White, Black/White, and Green/White
Colorado Mock: Blue/White
Buy 1 Get 1 for $39.95: Sport Tek Navy Mock, Cotton Collar in Black/Khaki, Tan/Khaki and Navy/White

Hope this helps, if you have anymore questions feel free to ask. If you want to call us our number to the booth is: 775-284-4758

Ok everyone, we had a lot of people ask us questions about Bill ONeill this year and a lot of the questions we didn't have the answers too. We would like to give everyone the opportunity to ask Bill ONeill questions. Over the next week submit a question you would like to ask Bill ONeill and we will forward a list to him to have him answer. Thank you
