Title: Today's news from USBC Open Championships
Post by: milorafferty on December 17, 2020, 10:32:36 AM

Kinda looks like what they wanted to do last year...

Just saw the e-mail.

I wonder if we can keep our May dates.

On Bowl.com it says you will have the same days, but the times may be adjusted.

If I get stuck with crap times(When I had great squad times before), I'm going to give them a huge truck load of shit.

I just checked with our squad leader, and our dates of May 14 and 15 remain the same. our team times are the same, but S/D times are affected. That's the latest as of this morning, I'm sure logistics will shift a bit b/c our group is bringing fifty teams. I think South Point has less than 100 lanes, so I'm sure some team times will change.

Yeah my group is livid, this is our third schedule impact because we had rescheduled for the canceled 2020 dates, and then we were supposed to go end of March for 2021.

Not sure we'll recover many after this, but it is what it is. Now to deal with the headache of contacting the other 59 people.

They are supposedly going to email Captains new times over the next week.  Mine have yet to be adjusted... You can check manage your team on bowl.com...

We have April dates, so from the looks of the e mail I received (I'm the squad leader) we will get squeezed in to a May, June, or July time frame.

So anybody who signed up and paid for the March/April is most-likely not going to get the "prime spots" they signed up for, which sucks. I understand the USBC is in a bind here, and had to draw a line somewhere. I'm just hoping we're not bumped to a 7am S & D slot, or 8 am team slot, but I realize it's probably going to happen.

Plus, like last year, they may have to push dates back yet again.

Yeah, our squad leader was just told this by USBC is all. I think details are coming early 2021.

That all seems to be locked down at this time.

At this time, the online registration/team management portal is turned off indefinitely to allow time to complete the move of teams and reset the squad schedule, which resulted from the shifting of the event's start date to May 1.

Welp.. it looks like I'll be sitting out this year's tournament. I wasn't able to keep an established average over the past 2-3 years (family health issues kept me from bowling regularly or subbing), and without having any alleys open for leagues since last January, I wasn't able to establish a current average this past year, or bowl the 27 games at Nationals needed to use that average which would have me coming into Nationals at 220 or higher.

That, and not having any means to bowl, let alone bowl Nats, It makes more sense to wait until the next year to try anything. Right now, I don't see anyone, especially those on the west coast, are going to be ready let alone tournament ready for this year's tournament.

At the Open, it doesn't matter much. If you come in at 204+ on a house shot, you are still considered "chum" for the deep end sharks.

Chad has to make sure the pba, wpba, college, team usa etc. folks are able to make money off the rest of us.

The trick is don't play brackets.

Well it has been over 2 weeks since the announcement and I haven't heard anything yet on our squad times. We are going in May so our dates should remain the same.

My guess is that trying to reschedule the 2 months delay (March, April) has been a bigger chore than expected. I visited the website and nothing is available on it.

Plus I'm guessing they are getting quite a few cancellations.

We're supposed to go in June.  I hope things are more opened up and normal but who knows....

I bet they were on holiday break as well. I'm sure they'll respond soon. I'm still waiting to hear back too.

Ask and you shall receive.

I just got the email from USBC while a little vague it basically stated my team had been moved to the 8:00 am squad.

Is there such a thing as being up at 8AM in Vegas?   :-\

I'm an early riser and it is really 10 our time.

We used to bowl the 10:30 pm team squad and it was always late getting started sometimes up to an hour. With the time change by the time we got done it was like 4:00 AM and we were walking zombies.

Nothing on doubles/singles yet.

I have felt that pain before as well.

The last time I bowled nationals(Vegas-09?) we had that shift, finished around 3:30 AM, and had to be on the plane @ 6. Not a lot of fun, that.

Can't argue that!

Back when National Airlines was still flying, I had a flight to catch for a weekend convention down by LAX that started on Friday, but I still had to bowl league on that Thursday night.

At McCarran in Vegas, you could only check in up to 4 hours ahead of time for your flight. Well, National not only had a deal with the Rio and Harrah's (they were partly owned by them at the time) where you could check your bags in at their ticket counter they had at the Rio, but also check in 8 hours in advance. So I checked in at 4, ate dinner at the Rio, walked back across the street to bowl league at Gold Coast, then drove to the airport (next exit up off the freeway), parked, and went straight to the flight with an hour to spare.

With Vegas, you can definitely get there with plenty of time! If not, just catch a cab; they're trained to run over and through everyone to get to the airport anyway!  ;D

Well the portal has been opened back up.

Our doubles/singles time remained the same.

Now to see if our team is willing to travel there in early May, wait till later, or just cancel this year.

Current plan is to go in early May but that might change depending on who has gotten the covid vaccination.

I guess I "bitched" too soon. Our squad times for team actually improved and we kept the original 5 PM squad for Doubles/Singles.

Question for you.. I'm assuming you're up in my area (NorCal).. how are you practicing, with everything closed down? Are you making the run over to Reno/Sparks/Carson City? I can't imagine you wanting to drive up to Redding or so just to practice..

I'm in Stockton. I have not thrown a bowling ball since last March when our local houses shut down for "Three weeks to lessen the surge on the hospitals".

In late June, we were on our way to Newport Oregon for vacation and traveled through Redding. There was a bowling alley there that was open for business, we stopped in(actually stopped there because of Liquor Barn which shares a parking lot) and checked it out. The bowling alley was open for business at that time. Nice smaller house, probably a nice place to bowl.

The shut down hasn't been that bad for me overall. I work for a very large mental health hospital company that has campuses all over California. We have Skilled Nursing as well as Mental Health treatment. Also having a serious impact on my ability to bowl is I'm taking classes to finish a degree at UC Berkeley. So the shutdown has made life a bit easier since I don't have to drive to Berkeley for classes four days a week.

I'm gonna pay my $185 and bowl like shit in Las Vegas. My Open Championships average is 176, so I figure to knock it down and move me out of the top division.

Yep, I intend to be a sorry-low-down-cheating-sandbagger.  ;D

On a different note, if anyone wants to join us, I will probably have space available. I usually take four teams, but several of my normal group are not going to make Vegas this year.

Team squad is June 28th at Noon with Doubles/Singles on June 29th @ 5:00 PM.

One thing to consider, if you feel you are in the running to take home an Eagle, we are not the group for you.  ;D

Our TEAM time on May 12, 2021 got pushed to 8:00 AM.

Everyone we are with (I think 15 people) just rolled over our 2020 Entries.

Flying in from Richmond, VA and last week several people got
Southwest roundtrip at $175!  I bought airfare the  next day (January 12, 2021)
for $220 roundtrip.

I put in a request to the USBC that if a team squad opening of Noon or 4:00 came available could we be moved to that squad. We had been moved to 8 AM.

Within a week they contacted me and said we had been moved to 4 PM.

So I would assume a few cancelations are happening.

Kind of wish my group tried that, we rebooked on weekdays because there weren't any good weekend times open when they let us move our cancelled dates.
