Two ball tote as carryon bag on Southwest?
« on: March 08, 2010, 12:36:41 AM »
Hello everyone.  This is my first time flying with my equipment and just had a general question.  Southwest says u can take bowling balls as carryon, does a 2 ball tote work for that?

Just wondering.

Thanx.

southwest doesnt mind it. But it is all dependent on TSA and what ever person is working that day. I have had no problems with it before and then at other times the person wont let it through. it depends on who is working that day and is on a power trip with their job.

I was detained for 2 hours for trying to carry my spare ball onto a Southwest flight.

If this is your spare ball you might want to check it or leave it at home:

Airport security won't let you.
I had a ball in my carry on luggage along with some clothes and had to leave it behind.  Security thought I could use it as a projectile weapon (I was choked and considered and wanted to say that my siege won't hit hard without oil anyways)

I flew Southwest to Reno a week ago and neither TSA or the airline hassled me  when I carried on my 2 ball tote.  TSA did inspect my checked 3 ball roller though.

Thanx guys.  I think I will take my spare ball on the plane with me as a carryon.

Different stories for different people... love it.  We flew Southwest last week, Milwaukee to Reno (via Vegas).  We checked bowling balls, TSA checked them out with no problems.  A couple guys brought 2 ball totes with 2 balls in them as carry-ons with no problems.  TSA took them aside and quick checked them after xray and that was it in Milwaukee, I think Reno's TSA just xray'd them.

Check directly with the airline. While using a 2 ball tote as carryon should basically be no problem, I am sure that the board crew might ask you about the total weight of the package - it could be that you have to give the tote away as normal luggage, because the overgead compartments only hold a ceratin weight safely, or you might have to leave them on board in a secure area with the cabin crew, just to avoid insury! I think this might depend on the specific airplane type and interior equipment, so better check it thoroughly in advance

Southwest says it has to fit under the seat.  I am bringing two 14 pound spare balls in a double tote so it doesnt take up much room.  This way my friend and I can take 6 real balls a piece cause its my first time in Nationals and I want to be prepared.
