Title: Two ball tote as carryon bag on Southwest?
Post by: EboHammer4ever on March 08, 2010, 12:36:41 AM
Hello everyone.  This is my first time flying with my equipment and just had a general question.  Southwest says u can take bowling balls as carryon, does a 2 ball tote work for that?

Just wondering.

Thanx.

With some of the carry-ons I see (and I travel SWA every week) I would be shocked if they didn't allow it.
Some people look as if they are bringing on their life savings.
I would believe you should be able to.

I was detained for 2 hours for trying to carry my spare ball onto a Southwest flight.

If this is your spare ball you might want to check it or leave it at home:

You should check with the TSA at the airport. The Omaha TSA would net let us carry balls on the plane. They said if they couldn't see through them they couldn't be carried on the plane. I was flying Southwest and they said you could carry them on, but the TSA has final say.

Omaha doesn't have X-ray? I have never had an issue bringing a bowling ball through security

I've carried on two balls in a shoulder tote multiple times on Southwest (and also Virgin Air) with no issues. You will have an extra step going through security but it's only a small delay for a swipe test.

I'll second that TSA has the final say and it even comes down to the supervisor on duty.  In the past when it has been slow I've talked to them and the explanation I got was that it was the supervisor on dutys call.  Quite frankly it could even come down to the kind of day they where having so there is no consistancy to it.  I will say that I've seen instances during Nationals when they see a lot of balls that they get a little irritable when one of the scanners says "Bag check on 3" only to find it's a couple balls.  One trip his exact words where (after being told 3 times that he had a bag check) "There F***** Bowling balls!! Have a good flight"  Drill sargeant type that for the life of him couldn't figure out why the person on the scanner couldn't figure it out for themselves.  I know last trip a couple in our group called the airline and was told they where allowed only to have TSA make them go back to the counter and have them checked.  Of course it was also an extra charge then. Play it safe and ship them ahead if there are too many with normal allowances.  I ship two, take two, and then use the other half of my bag for clothes as well as the carry on.

It's all dependant on the airport / person working security.  One lesson I learned don't ask for permission, try to carry it on and see if they stop you.

I took 6 balls for three people on a plane to Reno about 3 years ago, it just depends on the TSA Agent.

I've flown to Reno twice in the past 3 months on Southwest departing from Midway in Chicago...both times I carried a double ball tote onto the plane, and had no problems either time.  I can only speak from experience regarding Midway and Reno's airports, so yes, it really depends on the TSA people in your particular airport, but Southwest itself allows the two-ball tote as a carry on

I have carried one ball on in each of the last 7 years.

One year, I asked at the ticket desk if I could carry it on, she said no.  I said, well, I am going to take my chances.  TSA let me through with no problems.  Another year, I got mine through with no problems, and another guy in my group, went through at a different time and a different check point, was told he couldn't bring his on due to the "not be able to see through it" clause.  He brought a buzzsaw silver diamond and I had my target zone.

southwest doesnt mind it. But it is all dependent on TSA and what ever person is working that day. I have had no problems with it before and then at other times the person wont let it through. it depends on who is working that day and is on a power trip with their job.

Airport security won't let you.
I had a ball in my carry on luggage along with some clothes and had to leave it behind.  Security thought I could use it as a projectile weapon (I was choked and considered and wanted to say that my siege won't hit hard without oil anyways)

I flew Southwest to Reno a week ago and neither TSA or the airline hassled me  when I carried on my 2 ball tote.  TSA did inspect my checked 3 ball roller though.

Thanx guys.  I think I will take my spare ball on the plane with me as a carryon.

Different stories for different people... love it.  We flew Southwest last week, Milwaukee to Reno (via Vegas).  We checked bowling balls, TSA checked them out with no problems.  A couple guys brought 2 ball totes with 2 balls in them as carry-ons with no problems.  TSA took them aside and quick checked them after xray and that was it in Milwaukee, I think Reno's TSA just xray'd them.

Check directly with the airline. While using a 2 ball tote as carryon should basically be no problem, I am sure that the board crew might ask you about the total weight of the package - it could be that you have to give the tote away as normal luggage, because the overgead compartments only hold a ceratin weight safely, or you might have to leave them on board in a secure area with the cabin crew, just to avoid insury! I think this might depend on the specific airplane type and interior equipment, so better check it thoroughly in advance

Southwest says it has to fit under the seat.  I am bringing two 14 pound spare balls in a double tote so it doesnt take up much room.  This way my friend and I can take 6 real balls a piece cause its my first time in Nationals and I want to be prepared.
