"We had the pattern out for a month and could try different surfaces and layouts"....

I can see the gripe from some guys on the bowl.com boards now.  If you don't have a ball company or pro shop behind you to allow you all the tools....you're just bowling for some bracket money and the experience.

Great bowling...not trying to take anything away from that monster number.

Russell,

I disagree. It doesn't say they bought new equipment for this.....they may have had every ball already and just tried different ones with different layouts. Anyone can do that. And anyone should be able to find a center willing to put the shot out for them. All it takes is the time and effort to go ask around and the committment to go out and practice. Even the "average" bowler would have some older equipment that they don't use anymore that they could go and try and see if it works better then what they have now.

Now that being said, without the talent of these bowlers, all that work may not make much of a difference. But anyone should be able to put the same pre-work these teams did, anywhere in the country. If you tell any center that if you put this shot down you will have 5-10 people bowling 3-6 games every week during a normally slow time, as long as you put out the USBC shot....I think any center would jump at that chance.

Fair enough...I agree that talent is still an overwhelming factor.  It's possible that they didn't do any manipulating of equipment besides surface, however having a pro shop there readily available didn't hurt at all.

Plaza Lanes in Ripon, WI puts out the shot for us so if anyone within earshot of this message would like to meet us this Sunday around 10:00 a.m. to work on their chances to succeed in Baton Rouge.  We put about 10 games each on the pattern last week and he charged us $10.  Cheap price to pay for the opportunity to improve your game.

I'll echo Jorge's words on Russell's response although he(Russell) was not trying to take anything away from their bowling talents.  However, we're assuming that the typical league bowler actually keeps his/her older equipment or has the inventory of newer equipment to do so.  I've plugged and redrilled four older balls to use for Baton Rouge and they seem to match up very nicely.  If the operator can consistently duplicate shots, it will be even more helpful in your chances to flourish.

Yeah just to reiterate...definitely not trying to take anything away from 3400.  That's a good night on a league wall...let alone a pattern like that.  Truly amazing shotmaking by those guys/gals.  Probably going to be worth an eagle in the end.   If not pretty darn close....

Yes!

And if someone DOES beat that, they'll have earned it.

Great bowling to those guys the number is staggering on a shot that can play that tight.

We have been bowling on this years pattern for three weeks and it the knowledge gained is very helpful. However that being said. At Nationals, the type of oil maybe different, with a different type of oiler, on a surface that is different from what most of us see, Outside conditions are different which if you believe Center owners can affect the oil.

Bowling on the pattern before hand can give you a general clue as to what you might be facing, but their will be some variables once you actually get on the lanes at Nationals.

Just my thoughts.

Russell,

I understand. And more then likely this team did get new equipment and changed layouts based on what they saw.....something most average bowlers can't or won't do. But they didn't specifically say that, and I wanted to point out that the average bowler can get older stuff out and pay a very small price to change layouts or even just use as is. Never thought you were taking away from their talent level and if I implied that I apologize.

One thing I can say for Wisconsin is there are more opportunities to bowl on flatter patterns than what there is here in Oklahoma. No knocking on anybody I think it is great that the opportunity does exist. Lots of talent there.

That's a 680 average per man on a sport pattern!
Doesn't happen very often around here on a house pattern.

These gentlemen are very good young bowlers. Most have bowled collegiately so they understand the team concept. Also in Wisconsin there are tournaments almost every weekend for them to work on their skills. Not sure about their equipment choices yet but you can assume Brunswick balls were in abundance on the rack with 2 staffers in the mist.

Almost all things are better when they come from Texas.Except maybe the USBC. LOL
free agency it is until i get a better offer.   LMAO

Heilman is the only staffer.  And these guys are mostly young -- many in college -- so you can be sure they weren't buying and drilling up a ton of new balls.  You can have 4 balls or so and with surface manipulation cover a wide range of reactions.
