Title: Urethane at Nationals
Post by: thewhiz on April 06, 2018, 11:13:01 PM
Is there a place for urethane at Nationals?  Is it wise to take one?

Depends on the bowler and conditions. If you're going with a team or teams that knows how to break down a pair successfully then it could definitely work well.

If you're not very accurate, I probably wouldn't recommend

Team I go with is just in it for fun so probably isn't gonna work.

The condition in Vegas was conducive to using urethane up the outside assuming you had the hand to make it work. It may not make you very popular with the other people on the pair however

As a general rule, no.  At Vegas there were some pairs where it could work if you are very good at squaring up outside 5 board.  Other pairs where it was a tease at best.  High volume, pattern at least 38 ft, and 5 loads 2 to 2 are not often conducive to urethane

What about a Hot Cell or Widow urethane?  I could see one of those working when you want to start up early but control the backend.

I’m high speed high rev.

It MIGHT be possible to start with urethane on the team shot if you’re rev dominate. I started with a Gauntlet at 1000, but I was further left than I like to start. Still, it’s not as if the lanes have built-in friction you’re dealing with, and there’s plenty of oil (even if it’s fairly short). I struggle to see the benefit.

I can’t imagine using it on D/S at all unless you throw it 11 mph.

I had a playable line to the pocket last year on both shots with a Gamebreaker 2, with a 2" pin to PAP, no hole. It stabilized in the fronts like urethane and gave me a little more motion on the backend than urethane. I missed just about every single spare that wasn't in the middle of the lane though. But that was my best look.

From all of the reports this year, I'm hearing that they're a bit tighter and the people who had the best success played off of their reaction at the end of the pattern, rather than trying to get the ball started up early.

They're going to be hard no matter what, put your shot maker shoes on with your spare game soles. There's no way to "trick it".

Yeah... Urethane at Nationals isn't going to be fun. I would go with the 2 inch pin idea or lots of surface on a strong ball. Personally, I like an Ops ball (This year, I would say a pin down Covert OOB) then if the middles get beat up, go to a pin up Drift at 4k. I tmight be able to trick a Shadow Ops into rolling well, but concerned with needing to move in.

Yeah, you're not going to be lofting the left gutter at all. Make good shots and let the first shot tell you what to do. Also go to a squad and watch some people.

The moral of the story is either make shots or pay the price.  That's just the way it's going to be.  We can debate this and that but at the end of the day you have to know what your equipment does and how each ball relates to each other and how to read the lanes.

Make shots or drown.

I shot 630 in team using a Hot Cell.  I'm rev dominant but was playing somewhere up 5 (don't remember exactly as it was a few weeks ago).  I had a great look until game 3, but was able to move in a little bit and keep it around the pocket for a ~190 game.

I had 614 and that includes a chopped 3-6, a chopped 6-10, a 2-4-8-10 on in the tenth frame on a shot that literally stood up at 20 feet and burned out and a gutter, yes a gutter on a bagger. Somehow, we still shot 3009 in team.

unless you have a rev rate, no way, and your team-mates will not like you if you do.
