Title: urethane at nationals?
Post by: thewhiz on April 21, 2017, 11:11:25 PM
My pso knows a few guys who bowled nationals already and they told him urethane was key.  Anyone else hear that.  Also any suggestions on which balls to take.  Only taking 3.
No Rules solid
No Rules pearl
Eternal cell
Timeless
Unhinged
Pitch black

Lot more friction in team then expected.  Urethane would be very helpful for team. Singles/doubles is the other end of the spectrum. Very little friction and lots more oil.

Interesting. Lots of friction in team means people attempting to carve a shot kinda screw themselves.

I just talked to a friend who shot reasonably well, as nd his companion team is in the top 15.  He said they had nothing in, and played way out using a lot of surface to open up a little outside.  He said urethane wouldn't have worked for them, and they saw nobody doing well with urethane.  I am still taking my pitch blue but it would be a sucker play to try to use it inside.

I am taking my Pitch Black to use as a spare ball and also as a last ditch option at team if there is as much friction as people are saying.  My gut is saying to bring it but my brain is saying its going to be dead weight in my bag.

Team plays very similar to a short pattern. That may help on equipment or lines you may want to consider.

Most nationals patterns play about 2-1 with 5or 6 loads 2 to 2.  I am guessing this is flatter, as approaching 1-1.  That will often make a pattern seem shorter than it really is.

I had a good look in team with a 2" pin nitrous for games 1-2
struggled game 3 for a 605 set
wish I would have had a urethane for game 3

An EBI staffer I know shot around 1960-1970 all events and used a combination of Mako, Legion Solid, Heat Xtreme, GB2, and Cyborg Pearl for all 9 games and the BJ

That's a very respectable score.
He had to have a good group that all stayed together
That's also important

I bowled end march, did well in all of the events, and this year more than most I believe is controlling your speed at the break point. I observed alot of people who appeared to be lined up for a shot or two only to either blow through the break point or have it read to early. Your angles to pocket will as usual depend on your style but surface prep and ball choice will greatly depend on not only your accuracy but your speed control at end of pattern. Practice sessions will be important.

Also, I wonder whether or not a lot of people aren't misreading what's out there for Team event. They're seeing the ball read early, so they're natural inclination is to move in. The problem is that there doesn't seem to be a ton of length or volume to the pattern. With that being the case, the further in you go, the more it exaggerates that read. Like others have said, I think if you attack the far outside, which a lot of people claim is OB to start, you can keep yourself from ever having to get too far in. The difference this year is that it doesn't seem like you need the ultra-aggressive balls and surfaces even while trying to break them down.

A former teammate of mine (a lefty) shot a shade over 1900 at Nationals and he threw Urethane all 9 games.  I believe he was playing pretty straight, especially for him.  If I remember, Ill ask him next time I see him.
