Title: USBC nationals save money
Post by: rexb300 on July 25, 2009, 10:38:28 PM
like the PBA doing WSOB this fall

if nationals used only 2 or 3 places all the time
would it not be cheaper, Reno and if Florida gets done and
1 more in midwest or where good airport and hotel base ect
they wouldn't have to go setup the lanes
paying expenses ect

they should off moved the USBC headquarters and built another
national bowling center  right there & save money.
and bowling museum be right there for bowlers to go to.
and the people in charge can see whats going on and talk
to bowlers.

just a idea. RB

Nationals should be in Reno every year period!

It's not 100% up to the USBC.  They need to have a city WANT us to come there.  Reno has shown that the USBC is willing to sign an every X year contract, we almost signed one for Orlando till the economy went in the dumps, but a city has to make the offer.

Well, maybe they really don't want us to become too involved in what they are doing.

One of the things I liked about going to nationals was the different places it was at. I only went to a few but going to the couple locations outside of Reno was nice. Yeah Reno is nice due to the stadium but nice to go other places.

Finding a location where you can set up 60+ bowling lanes and keep them there for months at a time, is difficult.  Most of these centers have weekend events, maybe a week long event, but not events that are months long.  Had they been able to complete the bowling complex in Orlando then we would see east then west locations.  But Reno has a ready made fascility that is there solely for bowling.  Its also fairly easy to fly into, and has enough hotel space for the event.  I am sorry for the East Coasters that find it difficult to participate due to travel distances.  But I don't think USBC has much choice at this point.  Its cost effective to have the event in Reno.

Until the economy takes a decided turn for the better, I'm afraid it will be.  After all, USBC is revamping its awards, its youth program, its web site, building a coaching fascility in TX.  They don't have money for a bowling center in Orlando, IMO.  Had they gotten the $5 increase in dues, I'm not sure even then they'd have the money.  Because when the dues increase failed, it was mentioned that now USBC would have to find more then 2 million $$S in cuts.  Only if a private entity were to build the complex could it be completed anytime soon.

I was UNDER THE IMPRESSION that Disney was building the complex and USBC was going to use it! Guess that was WRONG!

even though tourism has taken a little hit here in Orlando, business itself is booming. the new $1.2B facility to house the Magic et al. is progressing well and real estate has started making a come-back (at least within the areas close to town).

Building a center should be workable but what to do with it during all the "down time" is another question. There are plenty of existing convention facilities here, so as a stand-alone 60 or 80 lane bowling facility, it seems like a waste of space.

I like the idea of the Nationals moving around. Reno is fun once or twice but tough to get to from the east or the south. Bottom line with bowling is always the same - it does not generate the revenue that other sports do (unfortunately)

Just bowl!

I believe the Orlando facility was to be privately owned and run.

The USBC was going to sign an agreement the same as with Reno that the National tournaments (Mens, Womens, Mixed) would rotate there.

Whether it is cheaper than the convention center settings I don't know. I'm sure they pay for the use of the facility.

But it might be cheaper than building lanes. Although the bidding cities normally throw in finanical incentives.

I'm sure it is easier for the USBC to go to the stadium. They would not have to supervise the building project.

I prefer to travel to different locations but I understand the economics of why cities have dropped out of the running.

I often wondered how many WEST COAST bowlers would make yearly trips to the EAST COAST if they do deliver an acceptable deal out east!

In its down time the Stadium hosts many sweepers and various tournaments.  I think if Orlando did get a similar fascility that other bowling events would come.

According to the article I read, the Orlando facility was to be a Disney-built and Disney-operated facility. It would have been attached to their Wild World of Sports complex and used for parties/entertainment/open bowling most of the time and then would host Nationals once every three years, with Reno also getting it once every three years and a random city getting it the other time.

Disney has been hit just like everyone else in this economy, but I don't think the USBC's issues had much of an effect here.

What Disney cares about is six months of tourists coming to Orlando primarily in the summer, which is the weak time for Disney World due to the heat/humidity in central Florida about that time. If you go on the Disney website, you'll notice that they give deep discounts for their summer guests. It's the spring, fall and Christmas/New Year's Eve that get charged out the wazoo.

I'm sure Disney is thinking they can build the bowling center, then offer up lodging packages to the bowlers. Couple that with Disney's bus and boat shuttle system and it's the perfect place to have a tournament.

Jess your account is pretty accurate. It was stated that it would be a joint venture between Disney and another company(Brunswick?).

If this ever comes about I will have to skip that year because the Disney company is PURE EVIL. Evil I tell ya, EVIL.

Do not attribute this quote to me.  Someone who I will not name hacked into my account this weekend.  Funny thing is he has never bowled Nationals!  He can't handle anything but cake shots!

I'm not much for Mickey Mouse but my wife and I have vacationed twice at Disney World in the last three years and we love it. There isn't a better-run business of that type and/or scope anywhere in the world, IMO, from a customer service standpoint.

You're not going to find many places that will run a shuttle from the airport to your hotel (and you have your choice of about 20-something of them on the Disney property), then give you free shuttles to the venue for you and your gear every 20 minutes of the day.

I want to bowl at the stadium before I die but I'd jump all over an Orlando trip if Disney was involved.

Make no mistake about it. The USBC can save tons of money and you will never see any of it. Maybe if they cut all the useless jobs out they can generate some extra profits.. Like the scale room at nationals. How much wasted there? I'm sure there are several others as well..

Just my opinion............

I just competed in my 20th national this year and I think I'm skipping the next one or possibly 2 because they are in Reno. It has been there 6 times since 1990 and scheduled for 2010,2011,2013. One of the things I enjoyed the most was seeing different parts of the country. I know it's about bowling our national tournament but, it was also part of the excitement of participating in it. I love a good casino as much as the next guy but, enough is enough. Sure wish Wichita didn't screw up their bid (way to go boneheads). Anyway that's just my opinion.

Don't even get me started on the money they waste.Do you know that the score keepers and lane
monitors are  not all from the area that the tournament is held. They have people who are traveling
every year .The USBC pays for their housing and some meals during the day. They pay these people
for the women's tournament 4 months time frame almost as I make in 9 months. And the men's
is even more because of the length of the tournament. If you don't belive  me  just ask one of them and see if you can get and answer.I did not realize this until I noticed a man and a women from the Detroit
area working the  women's tournament in Reno this year.I ask them what they were doing there and
they proudly told me about the jobs. The USBC hires people to travel each year, most of the people have been doing this for years.Great gig if you can get it!
