What are the chances?

Of USBC’s being cancelled because of coronavirus. I have a major problem spending $800 to go to that shit hole Reno, NV. I can go to international destinations for a few hundred more.

Watching the news the virus was in Washington state 6 weeks before they knew it was there.  Then it followed with how the mortality rate can't factor the number of people who've had it and never knew or had been tested.

Mainly affects elderly,  and those, with breathing issues.

People may experience:
runny nose
sore throat
cough
fever
difficulty breathing (severe cases)

Like everyone else has said: wash your hands and don’t pick your freaking nose. The areas where this is spreading are the places with lower quality healthcare systems and denser populations where it is more apt to spread quickly. And a place right outside a biological testing facility, but that is a different subject all together. But here in the US, Canada, and other very modern countries, we don’t have much to worry about as long as we use common sense and personal hygiene

Common sense and personal hygiene. Not exactly the strongest attributes for Americans.
Point taken lol. While I agree mostly, there is a still a thing called herd immunity which basically says that if enough people are vaccinated against a disease, it will protect a few that are unable to be vaccinated. While I don’t want to star the whole anti vax argument, the same principle applies here. We have a higher population here that will follow the personal hygiene rules than other countries so it is less likely to run rampant here, or be as severe. I could see it going apes#*t in lower income neighborhoods if it enters one though for those very reasons

I'm not changing one thing in my life due to this virus. It's way over blown. The media is selling this and making money from it. That's the only reason it's as big as it is.

Remember how everyone thought they were going to die in a terrorist attack after 9/11? It's the same with this. You still have better chance of dying from a lightening strike or a car accident than either of those two.

I work in the emergency room of a medical facility and in no way do we consider this an over blown crisis. Don't let whatever negative feelings you may have about the media cause you to make unsafe decisions...the outcome is uncertain but this threat is 100% real.

Unlike a lightening strike or a car accident their decision(s) can endanger others.

This is one tough virus.  It can apparently affect buildings too.

------------------

A hotel in China that was being used to quarantine people with coronavirus has collapsed, the BBC reports. Officials say roughly 35 people have been rescued from the rubble, leaving as many stuck inside. Tweeted video footage shows rescue workers laboring amid dust and dim lighting to find more people. USA Today notes that no reason was given for the collapse of the Xinjia Express Hotel in Quanzhou, which occurred just after 7pm local time. A man who lives across the street says he was having dinner when he heard what sounded like an explosion, and ran to the balcony to see the whole building crumble.

One woman says her relatives, including a sister, were under quarantine at the Xinjia Express. "I can't contact them, they're not answering their phones," she said. "I'm under quarantine too [at another hotel] and I'm very worried, I don't know what to do. They were healthy, they took their temperatures every day, and the tests showed that everything was normal." City officials had converted the hotel's 80 rooms to a quarantine facility after the new virus cropped up in December. Quanzhou is in the province of Fujian, which had 296 coronavirus cases as of Friday. Some 101,000 people are said to have contracted the virus worldwide.

How is it that USBC has not made an announcement one way or the other? The Open starts in 10 days, yet not a single word from Murphy. Professional sports teams are playing to empty arenas/stadiums, but Chad is too busy to issue some kind of release?

Way to prove what a clueless asshole you are chad.

Honestly, I think this is being hyped by the media into more than it really is, but USBC needs to be out in front publicly about it.

We chatted about this at league last night... my opinion was can the USBC afford NOT to have this tournament?!?  I think the answer to that is no.  I guess we'll see.

Yesterday I saw on TV where the average age for those that have died from this is 80 years old.  The medical experts here in Tampa are saying most everyone that does get this will experience nothing more than that of a common cold IF you have a strong immune system.

To Milos point.  The media is way over-hyping this.  When Ebola and Swine Flu hit during Obama's term; way more people died from those than Corona and yet Corona is getting way more publicity than either Ebola and Swine Flu.  PLUS......it took dumbass 6 months to do anything about it.  Trump starting making changes within 3 weeks.  HUGE difference.  So here in the US, it isnt spreading at nearly the rate of China and other countries.

I do agree that Chad needs to say something and not pretend like this virus isnt an issue.  Let's face it.  There is always going to be that one idiot that has it and shows up and before you know it; Reno will be all over the news.

Considering how the USBC operates... I'm guessing it will be held unless Reno gets locked down.  Here is how the USBC is handling the Intercolliegiate Singles and Team sectionals this weekend which my son is participating in:

Quote
USBC is continuing to monitor the coronavirus situation and is relying on the direction of expert public health officials. At this time, all our events and schedules remain including this week’s Intercollegiate Singles and Team Sectionals.

Neither the NCAA COVID-19 advisory panel, made up of leading public health and infectious disease experts in America, nor the CDC or local health officials have advised against holding sporting events. In the event circumstances change, we will make decisions accordingly. USBC also is receiving athlete safety updates from the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC).

USBC Collegiate member schools and athletes also should consult with their own campus health leadership and follow any school-specific recommendation. USBC respects that decisions and policy related to travel and event participation may be different for each school and individual athlete. USBC will refund entry fees for any school or athlete who chooses to withdraw from these events.

We encourage concerned participants to check the CDC website for the latest information.

Honestly, I think this is being hyped by the media into more than it really is, but USBC needs to be out in front publicly about it.

The same way that David Stern or whoever is running the NBA at this time also hasn't made an announcement? That's what lead LeBron James to say that he "wasn't going to play" to an empty arena, but then backtracked on that statement.

The Elk Grove Unified School District here in Sacramento hit the panic button a bit too hastily a week or so ago and immediately closed every school in their school district because a distant relative of a student - not the student themselves - may have tested presumptive positive for COVID-19. They effectively moved their entire spring break to this week instead of their planed time, which screwed over all their activities, including the state basketball tournament.

With only one case in Washoe County (Reno) and Douglas County (Carson City), the "non-announcement" would basically mean "nothing to see here, move on, continue as planned". The NCAA is doing the same. So I'd say to continue as planned and if it changes, they will announce it.

Gov. Sisolak already has plans in place for the casinos and what they need to do for the hotels, so they're set there. What you need to worry more about is if any of those casinos are owned by MGM, as they announced that they are shutting down all of their buffets effective 3/15/2020 because of COVID-19. So eat up fast, otherwise you're stuck with fast food!

And since there ARE a lot of things closing around the country, then let everyone know that the tournament is still on.

What's so hard to grasp about that concept?
