One Lane Courtesy

not to start a war or anything, but just wondering.  bowled the open a little while ago and they announced before the doubles and singles event started that one lane courtesy would be requested.  this was because following us was the 8:30 team squad and they wanted to start on time.  no big deal to me, but one of my teammates stepped up to bowl while somebody two lanes away to the left was on the approach and getting ready to start.  anyway, this other fellow got really irate and gave my teammate an angry look.  he then threw a poor shot and he exploded.  the other bowler and my teammate traded evil looks the rest of the evening.  just wondering what every one else thought of this.  looking around, everybody in our area seemed to be using one lane courtesy without problems.

Bowlers know that its 1 lane courtesy, if they can't handle a person getting up on the approach 2 lanes away, they aren't paying much attention to throwing the shot.  The guy's lack of focus on his own game caused his fry moment, not your friend.  I was there last week and had not problems whatsoever with 1 lane courtesy.

Hell I don't know what I would do with a two lane courtesy. All that space around me would be distracting..lol I think all tournaments should be 1 lane. The only time I get distracted is if someone 2 lanes down is further up on the approach than I am. I try to pay attention to who those people are and wait until they are done. No problems.

I actually gave 2 lanes in singles and doubles---thats just because I was standing so far left, I might as well have been on the pair to our lefts lanes.

Last year we bowled on the pair of lanes in the middle of the center, but just left of the entrance walkway.  I was never really sure whether I should give lane courtesy to the bowler on my right, when he was 15 feet away from me.  What do you guys think?  I mean technically he was on the lane next to me on the right.

My home house has divisions in the lanes like that.  There's a big gap between 8 and 9 and another between 14 and 15.  Nearly enough to put a pair of lanes on, but instead there are building support columns and big-screen projectors.  When I bowl on the lanes adjacent to the gaps, I don't give courtesy to the other side simply because they're so far away.  Doesn't seem much point.  Even if we were giving pair courtesy or two-lane courtesy, I probably wouldn't for those pairs.

I'll echo Bob statment. I don't care whether it is one lane, two lanes, or one pair.  I only have a problem when the individual is in my line of site.  I start at the row of dots closest to the foul line, thus I am probably in many folks line of sight.  I don't like it when someone is further up than I, so I will wait for that person most of the time.

One lane courtesy was requested by the tournament manager.  That's what everyone will get from me.  As for the dirty look, well, there would likely have been more than that had the prima donna continued with their act.

that is what surprised me, the attitude from this big name individual.  i always thought that the better bowlers at the nationals would have good mental games and not let this sort of thing bother them.  a friend of mine who is familiar with this person stated that he is a well known hot head.  wonder how he got to be this good with such an unfocused mental game.  anyway, i agree with andrew, i will usually wait if someone is in my line of sight.

I just read the rules. They REQUEST 1 lane courtesy, It is NOT mandatory.

As far as the big name bowlers, keep in mind. The big name bowlers usually bowl in PBA tournaments, there they have 1 pair courtesy. If you aren't used to 1 lane, it SUCKS.

In any league and tournament I have been around so far, any halfways serious bowlers respects a 1 lane courtesy, with the right lane getting the favor of stepping up 1st. I never witnessed problems with it, and generally, if there are misunderstandings or other traffic hampering a good flow, a simple friendly nod or gesture will get things clear. Social bowlers are a little different, but I do not expect them top pay any lane courtesy at all (even though I sometimes tell them about it when they start runing around on 3 adjacent lanes).

If you have such a screaming diva on the 2nd lane next to you... ignore the dude. Or hire some kid's birthday party to fill the gap between him/her and you, and smile...
