I've stayed at the Stratosphere before.  Nice place. It's at the end of the strip close to downtown and close to the center.  I might stay there I can get it and flight for $420 out of Raleigh.  The package deals are definately cheaper than paying for flight and hotel seperate.

I absolutely love staying downtown.  It only takes five steps to get from one casino to the next (instead of the 45 minute journey it takes to go to the casino next door on the strip), the rooms are cheaper, the odds are better, the limits are lower, the people are "real", and it's only a ten minute walk to the best dive in Vegas...Uncle Jackie's Basement (known as the El Cortez, to the uninitiated).  Terrific odds on the craps table!

"only takes 5 steps" Did you mean 5 staggers? Never ventured into the EL Cortez, always looked like you might find eyeballs on the floor.

The El Cortez is an absolute dump...smells like a wet ashtray..lots of alcoholics and gambling addicts...god awful seafood buffet (I'd rather eat out of a McDonald's trash can)...but Uncle Jackie loves his customers and treats them like family and I have a great time everytime I go there!

(Though I may have stepped on an eyeball or two...I felt something go "squish" but was too "happy" to care.)

HOOTERS Casino. Flat out the best place to stay that doesn't soak you for a room night. Plus...Hooters Girls all around. Doesn't get any better!

Don't be too anxious to make your deals too far ahead of time.  Times are
tough in Las Vegas and discounts are getting steeper all the time.
