Will this ball make through the scale room?
« on: February 14, 2010, 04:41:32 PM »
Pulling some equipment out of storage I was saddened to see my beloved Black Widow solid with a crack in the shell from the CG to MB. Ive since put some practice games on it and the crack has traveled no further. I really love this ball at Nats and buying a replacement is not in the cards right now.

Anyone know if this will get rejected at the weigh in?

There is a technique to repair cracks that might come in handy here...

If you drill a small hole (1/4" to 1/2") through the cover where the crack terminates you will usually relieve the stress that created the crack.  You can then carefully plug the two holes and the crack will usually draw plug material from the plugged holes via capillary action.

It will be ok as far as weight goes but out of tolerance for roundness and size

As long as the ball passes the size test, and the static weights check out, you will be ok.  They have a ring that they pass over the ball, if the ball does not fit through the ring, it will be rejected.  I had a ball that had about a 4" crack in it, that happened just before I left for nationals one year.  The ball passed the size test and the weights were fine, so I was allowed to use it.

I would hope they don't allow it.  Not that I want you to bowl bad or anything but a ball with a crack in it could damage the lanes.  That affects everyone that bowls on that pair.

Could also damage the ball return equipment as well.

The crack on my ball was nowhere near the ball track, so perhaps that had something to do with them allowing it too.

near the track doesn't matter. still can jam up or damage the ball return parts, and once it hits the pocket and starts deflecting the crack could easily contact the deck. or if you come out of it wrong, stuck on he thumb etc...

IF it cracks the ball is done.  throw it away and replace it.  I know they aren't cheap, but you wouldn't try to drive to work on a bare rim would you?
