With about a month to go......
« on: June 03, 2005, 04:20:21 AM »
Folks, I am wondering everyone's opinion of the Nationals being in Baton Rouge.

This was my 2nd Nationals, my first being in Reno last year. This year's was not bad, it just wasn't nearly as good as Reno though. I enjoyed the bowling, other than that if you didn't travel to New Orleans you missed out on most of the fun.

SO-----if that is the case, why didn't they have the tournament in N.O. instead?

Baton Rouge was fun.  In some ways, it being a smaller town was nice.  It was easy to find things to do during the 5 minutes we weren't bowling and car rides were short and sweet.  Getting through airport security on the way out, even leaving at high-travel time on a holiday weekend, was a snap.  The city itself, with all of its red brick construction, reminded me of German Village in Columbus, Ohio.  Everything was so green too, which is a treat for those of us from the desert.  I got to see rain for the first time in six months.

As for the bowling itself, I definitely liked the bowler's area behind the lanes better than Reno.  The bowling stadium in Reno is so cramped during team event.  The surface was in great condition as well.  I didn't worry so much about what lanes we drew because of all of the lanes being constructed at the same time.  We didn't have a single mechanical problem in 9 games, either.  I don't think that has ever happened to me.

Jon,  you've got to be kidding.  8 seats per pair and not near enough room for equipment is better?  I don't think so, they really needed a lot more room in the bowlers' area than there was.

In Reno I was constantly tripping over someone or something during the team event.  8 seats means 4 bowlers per team sitting and one bowler bowling plus the seats aren't crammed together, there is more than a foot between each seat.  Then you have a good eight feet or more from the back of the seats to the railing with nothing but empty space.

but no seats

True, but I tend to pace as it keeps my legs loose.  I'm not sure why I saw the opposite in bag storage space from everyone else, but there you have it.

BTW, I'm not saying I didn't like Reno, quite the contrary.  I was just comparing the two.

Well, on the seats issue, the biggest problem this year was that we were not allowed to stack our equipment along the back rail as we have been able to in the past. We couldn't even fit our gear and guys were stacking bags, etc.

Honestly, I think that the USBC needs to consider 4 man teams. It's easier for those who bring only 1 team for all to have a doubles partner and both the room issue and the pace issue would be better. I enjoy 5-man, but it's a problem.

As for why not New Orleans, you've got Mardi Gras, Jazz Festival during the time the event would run, and NO has no problem selling out all of their convention space so they would be reluctant (or probably refuse) to bid as they would lose $$. Also, not enough cheap hotel rooms in NO until summer.

I've enjoyed every year (first year 97 Huntsville) but some venues are obviously better suited to some people than others (ie Syracuse - I lived in CT for many years so had no need to go there for anything but the bowling)

I thought the space for equipment and bowlers was much better in Reno than in Baton Rouge. As was already mentioned, not being able to have the equipment back by the rail in Baton Rouge made everything very tight.

I didn't go this year, but was faerful of the famous Louisiana hunidity:

For those of you who bowled in April and May when it was starting to get warmer, how comfortable or uncomfortable was it?

Corpus Christi, TX (which is, oddly, just down the road from Baton Rouge) should also be loads of "fun"!

I went in late Feb. The humidity wasn't too bad, but it was colder than a brass bra in Alaska in the stadium. I used to live in Louisiana years ago, so the trip back was kind of nice. Except for the fact that I drove around town for about 3 hours looking for some freakin boiled crawfish. Never did find any!

Bring on Corpus. Only 2 hours away from my house.
