Mass Bias Marking on Blue/Green Centaur?
« on: May 04, 2016, 06:59:32 PM »
I just found a AMB Blue/Green Centaur on the racks, so I swapped an old ball I had for it.  Hopefully this will now be my dry lane ball, based on all of the positive comments I've read over time.  I might be able to use it as is without a complete plug job by just having the thumb hole slightly moved down.  Worthwhile to keep this ball?

My main question is, where is the MB mark on these balls?  This ball has the pin just above the ring finger, and a small dimple (CG?) below and to the right of the ring finger 2 1/2" from the pin, and just above the serial number.  I can't find any other type of mark that might indicate where the MB is.  Any ideas?

I don't think there is one.

AMB stood for anti-mass bias.  It's on the back side of the ball.  For layouts, you drew a line 6 3/4" from pin through CG and used this spot as your psuedo MB.

There is a tiny, about 1/8" diameter, almost clear dot or pin, approx. 6 3/4" from the pin through the CG. It does mark the "apparent" MB of the core.

Oddly, there is no true PSA or intermediate differential for this ball, but it does seem to make a slight difference where I place that MB marker. I have used one with the pin to the track side of the thumb hole and that ball had much less backend movement than when I placed that pin to the PAP side of the thumb hole. I do not know why there was this difference. It might have been because I am rev dominant, but I am not sure.

In any case, I'd suggest (not so much "recommend") that you place this marker where you'd normally place a ball with a true MB (for your release and delivery specs).

FYI I still have both a 14 and a 16 lb. BGC. On both, the MB marker is a clear 1/8" diameter "pin" and it is exactly 6 3/4" for the main pin, with the CG about 1/2" off that line.

If you are rev dominant, or if you have slower ball speed with a decent rev rate, and are facing dry-ish conditions, this ball will enable you to get to the pocket EVERY time. Your carry will be based on how well you match the surface to the oil pattern and your release delivery specs plus a decent, no more than average drilling. Put the pin a strong position, as the flare is at best an inch or so.

If you're speed dominant, you don't need or want this ball. (but a friend who has 16 mph at the pins and about 400/450 rpms, loves his BGC at 1000 grit playing down the 5 board. :) )

Note: Pins don't go flying with this ball; they just seem to lie down, consistently. You won't impress anyone with this ball, but your scores will surprise you and them.

Thanks charlest, I found the clear marker you are talking about.  Really tough to see it unless you know what to look for.

Yup. almost as bad as searching for Brunswick's CG.

You can see the black marker in my track on the line running from my pin to marker.  VBP said back in the day this was the best way to layout a G/B for a house shot.
