Noticed something with my SBG
« on: August 26, 2007, 09:06:17 AM »
Last night I was putting my SBG away and noticed that there was a darker layer near the surface in it's balance hole.  I'm thinking this is the oil that's soaked into the coverstock, but would like to know if anyone's has noticed anything similar.

FWIW, I rarely clean this ball because it's urethane and my spare ball.  A little oil in it might make it more useful for straight trajectories and dry lanes.

I have not used mine in a long time, but I have these two comments, FWIW.
1. Urethane's rate of oil absorption is incredibly slower than resin; if I recall, it's on the order of 20x slower. Oil can sit there a long time before it's absorbed; so wiping the oil off a urethane ball is not the time senstive situation that it is for resin balls. So I wonder if what you're seeing is oil. I am not saying you're wrong; I just wonder. I assume you clean your ball once in a while.
2. The SBG has a weird but beautiful coverstock; it almost changes before your eyes, when looking at it at different angles. I do not know what's underneath, but that "colorization" can have something to do with what you're seeing.

I absolutely agree with your remark about the "colorization"  These balls have the weirdest swirls around the pin.  It sometimes looks like the pin is sunken.

I'm really tempted to get it resurfaced on a Haus and give it a bath or two to see if the darker layer fades.  I'd also be tempted to polish it back up to 4000 abralon, a polish like Diamond Gloss, and maybe a coat of Control It.

I've never sanded mine, but urethane is notoriously HARD. I have sanded several and they usually need every level of intermediate grit to get the end point you want, a good deal of abrasive and pressure. Suggestion: be careful of the spinner motor; I know you're experienced. Be careful anyway, as we all are tempted to put a lot of pressure on these balls.

Oh, and the finer sanding of urethane produce much less grab than resins do. They go longer and hook a lot less when you do that. Again, you probably know, so I just reminding you. Unless you already have it at 2000 grit, I wouldn't go all the way to 4000 grit. Stock is 1500 grit, I think. Why not try 2000 grit + polish first?

Love to hear what you do and the results!

I tried Control It on my Slate and didn't like the result.  It was almost too slick to pick up from the ball return.  I didn't care for the reaction either, so I returned it back to stock condition.  For me, it was an over/under nightmare.  Like stated, it takes some work to change the surface!
