Give it a try
« on: January 17, 2007, 05:15:58 AM »
I've been thinking about trying visionary for a while now but havn't really had an openings in my arsenal. Now I'm considering replacing my epic battle with something equivalent or possibly even stronger.
I've been bowling on both pba and regular sport patterns in leagues and sometimes find it difficult to get the ball to finish (particularly high volume & length patterns). It seems as though this house is lacking the backend that I find at other local houses.

Anyway, I'm looking for suggestions on balls (FM, IS, AMB Part?) and possible drillings. My stats are in my profile. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, -Sikxer

how much oil i like my frankie may i believe it hooks later and more than the immortal solid  if it is lots of oil amb part but you need a flood another good suggestion would be the granite gargoyle it hooks in oil and is very reasonable in price

I would rate the "oil handling" capabilities as such-

AMB particle
Frankie May
Immortal solid

The AMB Particle will handle the most oil. Even on the heaviest soup, I can only get it to the arrows before it starts rolling. After about 20 games, the hook diminishes, but the ball just continues to roll. Becomes more predictable.

Granite Gargoyle has the same cover, but doesn't roll quite as early, but is a very  consistent ball.

The Frankie May is an early rolling reactive that can handle a bunch of oil, but polished, can handle lighter sides of medium. The Low RG core gets the ball revved up, and provides a strong arc on the backend.

The Immortal Solid has the same cover as the Frankie May, but with a MUCH stronger weightblock. Will cover more boards than all previously mentioned balls, but will cover them mainly on the backend. Can be over-under, and if drilled too strong, will over flare. With the correct drilling and surface, I think this would be the ball.

AMB Solid would also be a strong choice, if sanded up more than box finish. Slightly weaker weightblock than the Immortal, with the same cover as the Frankie May. Not as over-under as the Immortal.

The Battle is a strong, early rolling particle. The only Visionary equivalent rght now is the AMB particle, but the 320 finish on the AMB needs to be taken up to the 600 - 800 grit range. Otherwise it will be a lot earlier than the Battle.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.. I decided to give the Immortal Solid a try.
The driller suggested a pin under drilling (~4" pin to pap) w/the cg at about 5 O'clock. I tried it on a 38' sport pattern but I suspect the carrydown in this house was too much for the ball. My widow and special agent weren't hooking very much either but they at least gave me a few boards of movement.
I regret not going with my gut instinct (amb particle).. but hope that the immortal will still fit in my bag for regular league conditions.
In the mean time.. I'm keeping my eye out for another used battle for the soup.

If it does not move enough, hit the ball with a grey pad and give it a matte finish. This should set it apart from your other balls for higher oil volumes, and it is not enough, you might even try a green or red pad.

The patterns in this house tend to play extremely slick because of a lack of backend or carrydown and synthetic surface. This ball is definitely not burning up. It reved nice but scated right thru the break without ever getting into a roll. My other stuff at least tried to finish a little.
I hope to try it on ths later and see what it does.
