Green Gargoyle drilling views.
« on: September 07, 2003, 07:34:49 AM »
I just completed a seamless trade with captainhook for a 16# Green Gargoyle.  She'll need to be plugged and redrilled.  So, I'm wondering what I should do to punch this one out.  I've got a SCB for the oily stuff, a Blueberry C/2 when the backends go away, now I'm looking for condition number three.  Burned up heads, medium carrydown on the backends.  Not floods at the pins, just simple end of night stuff.  I was pondering a simple axis drilling as to not create any excessive skid/flip type of reaction.  Any ideas?  This is my first Visionary ball and it seems to have the same type of fanatical following that the Lane #1 stuff does.  Again, I would like to recommed Laryy, aka, captainhook, to ANYONE that wishes to work with him.  I was embarrassed that the ball he sent me was received the day AFTER I sent mine!  We were both swamped at work, and he still found a way to hold up his end of the deal.

Good luck Larry.  And thanks for all of the replies that are sure to follow.

Let me add that I am a fairly versatile player that can adapt with a combination of speed/lane postioning/approach movements/release...etc.  In other words, if there's a shot and I've got the proper equipment, I'll find it!

My GG was sensitive to oil; it made a great turn when it hit definite dry. I have a decent hand, but not 1500 pounds worth. I think even you may be expecting a lot to ask it to handle medium carrydown, but "Hope springs eternal". Maybe it can with and end-over-end release & a 10:30 drilling. I had a 4x4 and a 7x5 drilligns; the 4x4 was far too skid/flip; the 7x5 was too restrictive. Maybe a 1:30 (3.5x5) or a 10:30 (4x3) would have been ideal. I never had the heart to take sandpaper to such a wonderful ball. A 3rd GG may be in my future. Good luck!!

230,

First off, glad to hear you had a good trade and congratulations on your first Visonary acquisition. I've owned 3 Visionary balls, and all three have been absolutely fantastic. As for the Greenie, I'm with Charlest when I say that you might find it difficult to get the GG to cut through carrydown. The ball is more than willing to make a sharp change of direction when it hits dry, but it tends to skate on oil. But hopefully you have enough hand to prove me wrong. As for drilling, my greenie was laid out with the pin above and between the fingers, cg under ring. This layout gave the ball good length with an obvious change of direction off the dry, but not too snappy. Best of luck to you.

I don't own a GG but I have several other visionary balls.
I would have to say either a 10:30 or 12:00 would probably work.
I think the GG is a 1500 cover so you will get through the heads.

I have a few DC tours (Yes a few) one is drilled stacked with
the pin just to the right of my ring finger, up a little higher than mellonheads because my pin was longer.  I goto it the second game and use it the rest of the night.  The DC core produces a more flare than the GG but with your fingers you should be able to get it to move.

The cover should get you through the heads wil the drilling should
start to react in the midlane so you don't skate to much.  If you do
just knock the cover down a notch.

230--JMO.  Your mileage may vary.  Here's what worked for me at ABC National's deep inside of 4th arrow going past 5th.  Started with a Crimson Executioner drilled 12 o clock leverage and finished with a Greenie with a 3 3/8 x 3 3/8 which got thru the heads well and gave a hard arc to 1-3 and carried better than my Crimson.  I had the Greenie stolen so I am going to order the Blue Slate and another Greenie to go along with my Granite all will have the same drilling.  1:30 leverage drillings work well for me and with the Green aren't as oil sensitive on carry down as say a 10:30. Green still skates well thru heads though.

It seems that I've posed a question that certainly has a number of correct answers.  As I've stated previously, I'm often able to adjust to the line of a particular condition as it breaks down not so much with ball changes or lane positioning, but with hand and speed adjustments.  The condition that I'm referring to happens, for me at least, only three to five times a year.  I'm leaning towards an axis drilling playing just inside third arrow to around eight to 10 and twist the ball in from there with a decent mixture of hand & speed.  Otherwise, I can certainly bounce this bad boy off the cushion on a normal house shot and rely on the infamous Visionary hitting power to turn heads.  If this goes well, I might just sign on to be a test staff member.  You simply can't argue with the offer that Visionary makes you to test their equipment.
