The QUESTION: the "Blurple" or the Violet Gargoyle??
« on: December 21, 2007, 08:42:06 PM »
I posted at the bottom of another thread, but that's likely to get ignored.

I was just thinking. I also have the Ogre Pearl, the "Blurple" sitting in the basment, begging to be drilled, as well as the Violet Gargoyle.

Soooo, all you Vizh gurus, which fits better between the Pumpkin and the B/G Centaur, the Blurple or the Violet????

Pumpkin is drilled, 5x4, and sanded to 4000 grit matte.
B/G Centaur is drilled 4x5, and sanded to 2000 grit matte.

Chew on that one for a while .....

On a side note:
We need a nickname for the Blue/Green Centaur; I can't keep writing that long name with the slash in between. Contest time?

Hmmmmm.......
Ogre Pearl .029, Pearl Eradicator, Ogre core.
Violet   .039, Solid reactive, Gargoyle core.

Hard choice.  Of all the Ogre's for me the Pearl is the best and the bench mark of that line.  Same would be said for the Violet.

Biggest choice is the covers.  Do you think you need the pearl to get it down the lane after the Pumpkin is done.  I could take a Violet and polish it up and probably get the same reaction off the spot and a solid is easier to tune than a pearl surface wise.

Let's see rev dominant medium speed player....it's really a toss up Jeff.

If, I was gonna choose one I'd look at the lanes to be used on normally.  Wood with heads that go I'd take the Blurple.  Synthetic I'd take the Violet.  Wet/dry I'd take the Violet with a pin next to ring 105 deg.

FYI....on semi broken down mediums I've used my Buzz more than my Blurple this year.  It just matches up better for whatever reason.

Pick your poison buddy!

Scott,

Thanks. I understand your evaluation. Those were my thoughts also.

FYI Pin next to ring finger has almost without exception, been too strong providing too early reaction and causing too much over/under for me. I do much better with pin under ring and, even once in a while, pin over ring (when balls are VERY even reacting).

I've experienced the same thing on the the wet dry to a degree.  I have a Wicket B/R/T pin next to ring, and while I can control it, I have to hook the lane and give it a ton of room because it turns so sharp off the spot and if you slow it down the least little bit its gone.. So after the 2nd week of subbing I just started leaving it at home.

I like the layout you have on your pumpkin , but your PAP is farther right than mine, and your pin is around/maybe over an inch farther away.  I haven't thrown the Blurple or the Pumpkin but if you have your Pumpkin at that high of a grit already, the Violet might be a touch strong.  Going with the Blurple with the same layout may give you a similar look and a tad extra length on fresh.  But should be good when your Pumpkin is a tad too strong.

I'm gettin curious of the ogre line.  My better half is wantin an Immortal Solid and Pumkin after the new year (she'll have to wait a week or 2, i got stuff i'm gettin first ) and after she gets it punched up.  I may have to toss it a few times to see if I like it. (It's sad. we have the same span. She has 1 insert size different, and 4 pieces of tape is the difference in thumb hole, its her FMG that I'd been using the last few weeks).  As far as the Blue/Green Centaur goes, I just call it the BGC.

Since the name actually is the Green/Blue Centaur (Visionary website) , why not call it the "Grue"..

Change the surface (2000 or 4000 grit matte) or change the drill.

That was my original position. I can go from the Ogre to the B/G Centaur now.
If my Ogre was at 1500 or lower, then I can see fitting in  Blurple or a Violet.

Under normal circumstances, yes. Right now I wanted the Ogre to work on what I am bowling upon right now.

She does.. She has a higher ball speed than me, and not so much hand (Generally plays out).  She has trouble on fresh/heavy, but she's very accurate and can point it, and is a solid spare shooter.  I think this will help her alot.  She's a beast on dry lanes, but she needs something to handle more oil. Thats why I am getting the IS.  And the Pumpkin for a step below her FMG.   Its not often you see a girl with a head level (actually slightly higher) backswing.

Ya know Jeff in my mind the Blurple, B/G and Violet on most patterns aren't that all that much apart.  JMO.

By Zork, Lillen, that brings back some memories.  GReat Underground Empire?
"It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue."

Actually, Grue would be a great name for their next line of balls.

Just a bit of FYI here.  In a recent post, the coverstock question was raised to Jason as to whether any other ball has the B/G centaur cover.

Jason's reply was that, while no other ball has the same EXACT coverstock as the b/g centaur, the violet gargoyle does have a derivative of the coverstock from the b/g centaur.  Jason also said that the cover was stronger ( on the b/g) than most people think and that it was the low diff and low flare that allowed it to do what it does so well.

Yes, Jugernaut, I know that exactly. I was the one who asked. That's why I pursued the idea of the Violet originally. The idea of having a ball that andles more oil than the B/GC with the same ease of reactiona nd equal carry power was very attractive.

Then some experienced users suggested the Ogre Pearl (of which I also have one NIB). Looking at people's use of these 2 balls and the reviews of them, I see they are relatively similar in a lot of ways, beyond the fact that one is pearl and one is solid.

Here's my history, for these balls:
Of course, in my current situation, with the current surface and drill on them, my Pumpkin and my BGC are a perfect 1-2 combination, on this tricky but nicely blended house pattern, remembering that house blends can hide the difference between balls. SOmetimes this oil "situation" has a medium to medium+ oil amount, with carrydown starting in end of the 1st game; sometimes, it's a medium-light oil pattern, also, with carrydown + dry spottiness, somewhere from the 2nd game onward. It all depends on who has used the lanes and how they used them from the 1:00 PM oiling, a new oil time.

While I'd like to score high, this is the most trivial of mixed handicap leagues. My 2nd-ary objective was to see how different balls handle this situation and to find how to make the Ogre solid work. When I have trouble with any ball in the first game, I always, so far, go to the B/GC in the 2nd and 3rd games. My 2nd and 3rd games totals are always in the 440 - 480 range; so I'm not really letting down the team which has had its share of troubles.
We're in 3rd place of 20 teams.

(FYI Although I started out using Lanemasters balls, with shiny surfaces, in this league, {I am a big fans of theirs}, I have drifted into using mostly Visionary balls, with fine grit matte finishes, mostly because these are Brunswick AnvilLane surface, the original, low friction one.)

I hear ya, she's only about 5'2" and I sometimes tease her in a flirty way calling her "lil girl" and she gets very aggitated about it. .  She's not one I'd like to be bowling heads up on a very unforgiving pattern, however,  especially shorter oil.  Her THS average is 197 and is actually down because of a bad week (she got her nails done and couldnt come out of the ball cleanly, her mistake), and since then has started inching it back up, She shot 640 this week.

On sport her average is also very close to that in the high 180- low 190 range.  If it wasn't for the fresh oil giving her trouble early, I think it would be higher.  She's still in youth, and got qualified for JOG earlier this year on the Shark pattern uncharacteristically playing out, and didnt shoot a game below 193 after her her 4th game.  She won the tournament 221-167 against one of the better male bowlers in the area.  And its not the first time she's had to go though a combined male/female field to get qualified either.
