New Ogres!!!!
« on: March 31, 2007, 05:47:24 AM »
I have heard there will be 2 new Ogres coming out in April. From the Visionary forum on absolutebowling.com, I had asked if there was a solid particle Ogre in the works...was told it would be out in the fall AND the 2 new Ogres next month would be pearls.

Can't wait!!!!

A lot depends on your ball speed/rev rate ratio. The more ball speed you have, the more "ball" you need.
One example to the contrary is the Legends World Class, which definitely handles a lot of oil; its RG differential is .035, implying its flare range in the 4" range.

To those concerned about the low differential...

1) According to most ball experts and industry magazines, the cover of a ball accounts for between 70-80 percent of ball reaction.

2) A low differential can actually mean more (visual) "hook" on the right condition, since the ball will not flare as much, store more energy, and then make a more pronounced move at the back.

3) Low differential balls allow you to drill the ball stronger, and not have to worry about "over-flaring."  What do you think you are doing when you put the pin 5-6 inches away from your PAP on the newer, big-company hook monster balls?  Using less of the core's strength - i.e. relying on the cover.

4) Unless the pattern is terribly long, or there is a lot of carrydown, you often don't need a huge amount of flare to get the ball to turn over.

5) I don't think the point of the new pearl Ogres is handle a ton of oil.

6) Lower differential cores can allow you to have more control, and possibly play a more direct line to the pocket.  A direct line to the pocket often can score better due to both the "covering of less boards" and the increased entry angle from the outside.

7) Unless you have incredibly high ball speed, or like zero revs, the Ogres WILL hook for you.

Hope this helps.

Solid particle would more likely replace the Granite gargoyle.

I would like to see a light load particle.

I completly disagree. I have seen two different cored balls that have the reactor coverstock drilled exactly the same way, and react completly different. I would say closer to 50-60 percent.

2) A low differential can actually mean more (visual) "hook" on the right condition, since the ball will not flare as much, store more energy, and then make a more pronounced move at the back.

Yes, this is typically why I like pin up drillings.

True

4) Unless the pattern is terribly long, or there is a lot of carrydown, you often don't need a huge amount of flare to get the ball to turn over.

Thats exactly what I'm talking about. I don't see a low flaring ball working for true heavy oil, I don't care how strong the cover.

5) I don't think the point of the new pearl Ogres is handle a ton of oil.

I understand that, was looking at the solid one.

6) Lower differential cores can allow you to have more control, and possibly play a more direct line to the pocket.  A direct line to the pocket often can score better due to both the "covering of less boards" and the increased entry angle from the outside.

Agree.

7) Unless you have incredibly high ball speed, or like zero revs, the Ogres WILL hook for you.

I'm sure they will, similarly to the RS line of ebonites, big blue pearl, etc.

Your response to my first point seems valid on the surface -- but looking closer, one might find that your reasoning is somewhat "off."  Comparing two different cores in the same cover tells you how different the reaction is when you have a different core.  Nothing more...that is to say, any inductive inference on your part concerning the "amount of reaction" determined by the cover or core is invalid.  The reaction will change, yes.  But the cover still has more to do with it than anything.  I'm sure there have been tests and mathematical calculations to back up the 70-80 percent number...but we can agree to disagree though, if you prefer.

If you are thinking about trying an Ogre, do so, especially if you plan on bowling on more difficult medium to light-heavy patterns.  Jason Wonders at Visionary said the original Ogre has a hook potential just a bit under that of a Brunswick Ultimate Inferno. The ball is extremely versatile, and it hardly "breaks the bank."  True, it's not a "heavy oil" ball -- but then again, Visionary has other balls for that.  The AMB Particle (higher differential in a solid particle cover), for example.

Hope this helps (and thanks for agreeing with me on nearly every other point!).

I think I will wait until either the urethane(that would be awesome) or a pearl comes out. I'd like to see a pearl ball that wasn't so "violent" but still gets through the heads. The core might allow this to happen.

As far as different reaction, I suppose its how you determine percent to ball reaction. I would say a few feet of breakpoint difference isn't a large percent, but when you see 10 feet of break point difference between two cores, that is a large percentage.

Thanks.

Djarum --

The Purple/Black Pearl Ogre (release date April 13!) might be able to give you that "clean through the heads" with a decent, but still controllable motion in the back -- depending on the lane conditions you are talking about, of course.  If it's medium, even medium-light, you should be fine.  As said above in the other posts, the purple/black is supposed to react kind of like a pearl-particle, without being a pearl-particle.  To me, that says, "decent length with a smooth but strong backend."

Just another thought.  Something like a 5 x 3 drilling on a "control" pearl to promote length and then some forward roll?
