Ogre First Impressions-Update
« on: January 30, 2007, 06:44:00 AM »
First off.....I am a test staff member.  Have been since 2001 I think....have tried many of Visionary offerings going back to Orange Warlock, DC Tour, etc.  Previous to that I have used many Hammer offerings.

My stats. are in my profile.  Tend to a be slightly rev dominant mid speed.  If lanes allow it will play swing.

Got an Ogre with the help of Jason and Betsy shipped last Monday and arrived Wed. punched on last Thursday.  Specs. on 15.4 lb. ball on scale 3" pin 3.15 oz. top weight.  I use Switch Grips therefore like to get minimum 3.0 oz TW balls.

Prefer pin up balls for the most part.  Laid it out pin up over and slightly right of ring. CG kicked out 2" on midgrip line from center to a 45 deg. layout w/ X-hole  3/4" dia. deep to core 1" below my PAP on VAL depth of X-hole deep to core brought it back to 5/8 oz. pos.  These types of layouts usually work for me pretty well.

Left it OOB 600 matte to much surface for what I intended to use it for.  I have other medium heavy balls I would use instead of the Ogre like a FM Gryphon.  Took it to 1000 abralon and also have tried 1000 grey Scotch Brite.

Used it on some practice lanes....very nice even roll no over under and no big huge over reaction on dry backends.  Just a very readable symmetrical roll.

Used it at an over 40 scratch 3-Man tourney Sat. 21 teams of some of the better So. WI. semi-raisins and raisins in Sun Prairie, WI.  On a kind of THS on 2nd generation Bruns. Anvilane with some wear about 6 years old.  I'd guess about 40-42 ft. of oil some hang outside of 5 but not a hard shot by any means.

Went 227, 236, 203, 213 all with Ogre and my team qualified 7th out of 21 teams.  Not bad we eventually would up tieing for 3rd/4th place and getting some $$$.

Since, used it on Sunday on older wood 40 ft oil built up middle THS.  Shot a decent 710 in a doubles tourney.

All and all I'd say so far very even rolling ball with the surface I am using on it.  Shined up it would pop more but I have other balls for that kind of look.  About 3-4" of flare and rolls great on back end very predictable. Reminds me of some of the LM/L balls I have used and kind of like a little more hooking Blue Warlock with a lil more length.  Cover stock seems a lot like a Frankie Maye...about the same strength.  Some of these opinions are based on my technique and how I have the ball laid out.

Ogre will not be some blow your socks off ball but it will be one of the best 1st of the bag THS league balls available today.  Could be used a Visionary's benchmark ball.  Previously for me the Violet Gargoyle would have been my Vis. benchmark ball.

If you are used to playing a B/G Centaur up the track this ball would be a step up for more lane conditioner.  I'd say it could replace a Charcoal Executioner.

Any questions please ask away and I'll try to help.

TrimMan,

Would you say they cover, roughly, the same oil amount?
thanx.
