First Test Ogre Particle
« on: August 18, 2008, 07:56:29 AM »
Sorry it took so long to review, driller backed up. Drilled label leverage,15 lb,oob,THS with some carry down. I threw the ball up the boards about 15.5 to 16 mph [Qubica]standing 22 up 11. Slowed down more hand 27 up 14 (swing) 13mph. Ball hits hard, headpin to the wall and back across deck great carry. Played 1 complete game 22 up 11 246. This was synthetic old AMF lanes. I'll try it on wood house where I bowl soon. Maybe try some Secret Sauce too! Very simalar look to Ogre Solid that I threw every other shot the other two games. Noticed that the particles start to stand up after some use.

What do you mean with
"Noticed that the particles start to stand up after some use."

I don't understand this...

Thanks for explaining.

Its some kind of a gripping technology where by the tiny particles become activated by the oil on the lanes.  This activation causes them to feel as if the ball as aquired a totally different surface.  My Midnight Scorcher gets a kind of fuzzy feel to it, and generally a very similer feel is probably felt with other balls.  It kind of reminiscent to static electricity.  To form static electricity you rub two things together and a reaction occurs, in this case the ball comes in contact with oil and the particles within the ball become activated and a reaction occurs.  I am sure someone can give you a better explanation, but that is how I'd describe it.

Visionary's particle technology grows or activates more after absorbing lane oil.  It seems like a beard on a face and will get rougher with use.  This is similar to the Granite Gargoyle and the Midnight Scorcher.

It gets a beard just like the Granite Gargole did  Same cover.  This is normal for this coverstock.  One of the great factors of it as far as I am concerned.  Great particle technology.  Something you will not see from other manufacturers.

Or, another way of trying to explain the effect, is that it seems like the particles absorb oil and get noticeably larger to the touch.  The ball may start out feeling smooth, but as you bowl in oil, the surface of the ball begins to feel 'rougher' than before, similar to a man's beard does as the day goes on.  This was first noticed on the Midnight Scorcher and later the Granite Gargoyle.

Edited to add:

I would be interested in hearing how the Secret Sauce works on this type of particle ball.

strange... I am into surface science... and I study chemistry... but right from the spot I cannot explain this...
But if it works... why not

This is from my experience with the Granite Gargoyle which has the same coverstock and I have had 2 of them.  I know some folks played with the Granite cover to take to to a polished state but with all the great Visionary pearls and solids out there...I have never understood doing this.  Keep a heavy particle for what it's meant for medium to heavy oil.

I would be adjusting the cover with scotch brite as that's what seems to work best and keep it a heavier ball.  Say 600 to 1200. For those that remember the Granite it gets dirty fast so clean it after every series.  I would not be playing with the surface if it was me very often.  I'd clean it and leave it to what state you have decided what works for you.  I think the life of the cover can be effected by constant changing.  That's just my opinion from what I've seen with the Granite.

Maybe Jason can chime in on what he's seen.

Hey Dbar71,

There really is no problem with changing the surface on Ogre Particle, and as long as it's not polished, you should not lose the shadow effect.  The particles on this ball are derived from a soft, pliable material, and does expand with oil.  This is intentional, and helps get additional traction on the lane.

That being said, you can polish the ball if you would like.  It will not hurt the ball, but bringing it back to box condition will require a little more effort, because you will have to use a coarse grit paper in order to get to a fresh surface.  Typically, hitting it with 320 sandpaper, and then bringing it back up works just fine.

Like the Granite, the surface does attract some dirt, but it isn't as noticeable or as much of an issue with the Ogre because of the color.  Simply do some occasional cleaning/resurfacing, and you should have a ball that lasts for a long time.
