Questions regarding some Visionary balls
« on: August 26, 2009, 08:01:13 PM »
I want to match up my arsenal to certain lane conditions and as a result I have some comparisons I want you guys to comment on.

Ogre Particle vs New Breed Solid vs Franky May Gryphon: Which of these is the strongest at tackling really heavy oil assuming everything is constant?  I need a ball for the swamp my house puts out from time to time.  I already have a new breed solid but I am thinking that is more of a med-heavy ball.  As a result I am leaning toward either the ogre particle or franky may.  Should I get either one or should I just use my new breed solid for the swamps instead?

B/G Centaur vs Ogre Urethane: Which of these two is better for handling dry lanes?  I also already have a B/G Centaur but I am thinking this is closer to med-lite than it is to dry. Should I get an Ogre Urethane or stick to my B/G Centaur instead for dry lanes?  Also can either one double as a spare ball?

I apologize if these questions are redundant but I have no other way to put it. Hope this helps.

I would think a lot of this is really going to depend on your style of bowling and where you throw.

I think that question comes into play play for the oil ball.

For the dry lane ball, my thought would be that if you think the B/G might be closer to med-light, then you must be seeing a little more reaction from the ball than you want.  And if so, options would be to shine it a little to give it more length, or take the plunge and get the OU and have fun with that.

Either way, I think you would use the OU as a spare ball or the shines B/G as the spare.

If you already have a New Breed Solid, why not just try that one for your "swamp"? Change the surface as needed, although it starts pretty rough at 1000 grit Abralon (550 grit US). I wouldn't redrill it.

Depending on how far off the NBS is, the FMG is a possible option, as it's RG is lower and you can put a very early rolling drilling on it. They're still available.

If it isn't sufficient, then you'd probably need the Ogre Particle. It should handle almost anything in the nature of heavy oil.

The Blue/Green Centaur handles more oil and is much more adaptable than the hard shelled Ogre Urethane which is truly a dry lanes ball in almost anyone's hands. The BGC's surface can be easily manipulated anywhere from its stock 1000 grit US surface, down to 600 grit US to almost any level of polish, allowing it to handle anything from light to true medium oil, depending on drilling and your hand.

Visionary's hard shelled uretahnes, Glowing Amulet, Slate Blue Gargoyle and now the OU, are pretty stubborn shells to be changing from grit to grit. I just did a friend's SBG and it was hard work, plus you have to be very careful.

The solid shell on the BGC is so much easier to change.

I plan on using my Ogre Urethane as a spare ball. Then for dry lanes if I see them. I should be posting a video tonight of this ball.

I have the ogre particle. Our house recently recently refinished the lanes and would not or could not strip the back ends for a few weeks. Had the New Breed Pearl with me to practice, no hook. Next time took ogre particle in oob worked great. Its neat the way the particles "grow" too. Good Luck!

There have been some very good replies so far and I do not have the knowledge of many of the previous posters, but here is what I have seen.

For me, on my THS conditions, and with the balls all having different layouts, at OOB finish:

From strongest to weakest:  Particle Ogre, Frankie May Gryphon, New Breed Solid.

I don't have the Ogre Urethane, but I do have a Glowing Amulet and I would say that the urethane Glowing Amulet would handle dry lanes better than the B/G Centaur at OOB.

As Gsback and Charlest said, you have to take into consideration which balls are more coverstock adjustable friendly, because then you could have one ball fill many roles in your arsenal.  My above comparisons were for OOB only.

Thank you all for your answers.  This is exactly the kind of information I was looking for and I'm starting to get an idea of what to do next.  I understand that coverstock manipulation can change what conditions the ball works best on but I wanted to take that out of the equation for now.

I have one more question:  What's the general overview of the ogre pearl?  Is it more of a benchmark ball, a med-lite ball or a versatile ball? I also have a gladiator solid as a benchmark and I was wondering if the pearl would be more suited for med-lite conditions than adjusting the b/g centaur.

Ogre Pearl is an interesting ball in that it's a lot stronger than what most were expecting, given the price of the ball.

My Gladiator Pearl is polished and at 2000 as well, so it's skating longer than the Ogre and seems to be more controlled which allows me to use it later.  I usually play and up the board shot with it and overall, in the finish it's at, is quite stronger than the B/G....without a doubt.

Others have it different if they've got both ball though....all depends on cover.
