Title: Sell me on the Ogre Urethane
Post by: agroves on September 02, 2009, 05:58:06 PM
Decided to use a urethane ball in league play this year.  3 options on the market.

Libertor--too pricey
Storm Natural
Ogre Urethane

Gotta admit the shelf appeal definitely goes to the Ogre.  I was able to use a 2000 grip sanded clear wolf at the end of last season, as long as I stayed around the first arrow.  I just can't make up my mind which way I want to go.

If I cut the box shine off the Ogre, I think it would be plenty of ball for what I'm looking for.  My last experience with Visionary wasn't good.  But, I did have a Crimson Ex at one time that was great.

Thoughts?

Andrew, curious as to the ball(s) you had issues with where you weren't sold on Visionary.

I know nothing about Storm or Lane1 stuff outside of one smells and one costs tooooo much.  If all things were equal, I like what Visionary stands for.  They aren't the big guy.....but they sure act like it when it comes to what they do for the people that buy their stuff.

And besides, I feel they make the best equipment out there.  But that's my opinion.  I will always try them first regardless.

I had the immortal solid and it just didn't match up to me at all.  I put a layout that was too strong on it.  Perhaps my fault.

I've never had a bad storm ball....fwiw.  I've had a few Lane 1s, but only used ones, cause I don't like the price tag.

Andrew,

I remember the Immortal Solid debacle to be honest my Immortal Solid I never liked either unless I played really straight with it.  Burned too much energy off early so I moved on.

I have an Ogre Urethane on the way.  Basically, going to try it the way you are....play the same part of the lane. (twig)

I have liked ALL of the Ogre line.  I have or had every one. Price is right.

BTW...congrats on your shortness!

Heard about issues, not with the ball, but more about the drill and how it had the potential to burn up too much.  But really, that's what the ball was designed for and means that it was used on the wrong condition in my opinion.

Actually getting an Immortal Pearl drilled up for Saturday and am thinking about trying a solid since Spike is loving his.  The thing I like about that ball is that I have to pull the New Breed Solid out to replace it with a like ball.....so not only do I get a similar 'strong' reacting ball.......but I still get to have a ball that's gonna make people look!!

Sidebar:  Just an FYI Gary...........many not just a few have had problems with getting the layout correct on an Immortal.  Those that are rev dominant and don't need help would be better served with an FMG or other heavier equipment IMO.

If you do lay one out make it at a minimum 5 1/2" pin to PAP and don't kick the CG out too far giving yourself a very acute drilling angle but of course with that short PAP you have not sure how it will react.

Agreed Scott....as Jason and I were talking about this the other day.  I don't remember much of the whole conversation....but it was funny that people were disappointed at times in the ball when it really came down to the fact that the drill and revs they had were too much causing it to have nothing left at breakpoint and beyond.

I think I can guarantee I won't have that issue......sadly.

Basically this is what I did.  Not being 100% of the core strength, I put the pin at 4.5" from my PAP.  The result was over-flare and nothing on the backend.  Instead of redrilling, I got an immediate offer on it and sold it.

I have actually gotten to throw all three at the same time.

Liberator by far the strongest of three because of the porous Black U-dot cover. I like it but have to have a little polish to get it down the lane.

Natural is a little longer and snappier than the other two but not like a reactive. I have heard its not a true urethane but a hybrid of some kind. Not sure if that is true but it does arc nicely and is easy to control. Could use it a box or polished.

Ogre is by far the weakest cover of the three plus comes polished. It does hit well is works great on short and extreme dry shots. Did not get to use it with any surface so not sure how it would do.

It appears after week one of my winter evening fry league I will be in the market for an OU myself.  Now...only if my Glowing Amulet wasn't stolen.

I don't play well inside to out, I am far from accurate so I'd rather be near the twig too and my weakly drilled and polished Too Hot is still too much for my liking.

I hit my Ogre U with 4000 abralon no polish.  I am consistently shooting over 600 series and my Ogre SS never leaves my bag now.  This ball is so smooth and predictable.  Perfect for playing up the 8, 10, or 12 board.  Get one!

How did you guys drill yours? I got 2-3 top, 3-4" pin probably actually 3". Im thinking label, maybe stacked, I have no intention of using it as a spare ball. Its a great looking ball by the way, mine is almost blended to a baby blue with tiger stripes.

Mine has a 3 inch pin over the ring finger with the CG stacked directly below.

I think my mind has been made up.  I'll get one in a few weeks.  I've gotta put carpet in the new house we bought first.  I get home next week and won't start bowling league till October 6th.

My 2009 Arsenal:

Momentum Swing
T-Road Solid
Hot Sauce
Wrath Dead Flush
Rampage
Ogre Urethane
Spare

I've got a Black Widow Pearl that I'm going to redrill.  Plus a couple of tourney only balls in the basement.
