Slate Blue Gargoyle for slow speed older guys
« on: March 01, 2007, 02:38:24 AM »
I have two older guys who have lost a lot of ball speed and are struggling with todays reactives over reacting. I have suggested the slate blue for both. Both will move down from 15 to 14 lb. They both want to be able to play more down and in instead of swinging the lane.

Bowler 1 :   Avg track 5 1/2 over and 1 1/8 up, comes around the side so gets some side roll on the ball. 12-13 mph. This side roll does not help with his reactive ball jumping, but this is his style and he is actually pretty consistent. Just doesn't have the revs to bring the ball back strong enough when swinging the lane. Currently uses a Ebonite stinger, stacked lev, pin below ring, weight hole on VAL. I did not drill this as I would have gone pin up, but I did polish ball up which gave him some length, but still too much for him. He does clip holes some, esp on a pin down red pearl urethane hammer.

So here is my thoughts on layout for the SBG...bowler 1: Pin above ring at 2 oclock, 3 3/4 to PAP, and cg toward palm ( between stacked and label) so can add hole later but not needed now. Pin up to stay off holes, but leverage pin to not be too weak. THS with clean backends, wood AMF, oil line at ten, buff to 42 ft.

Bowler 2 : Lower track at 4 3/4 over, 1 up, same ball speed and similar release. Good lift and side roll but not enough revs to bring a swing back, but too much for down and in with his pin under label lev Red Monster. Different house but similar shot with Bruns wood, good backends, somewhat drier and shorter pattern. Layout for bowler 2 :  pin beside ring at leverage and cg once again toward palm.No danger of holes hitting for him. His ball seems more violent off the back end of the pattern. (prob due to lower track...side turn)

What do you think ? I have not personally tossed one of these yet. Only thing close is my Power Groove Dry/R. So I want them do be able to play down the dry and stay in play, but still maintain some punch and carry. Your thoughts please oh yee of the Visionary camp. Thanks, Al

Based on what I've been told, the Slate Blue may be difficult to find due to it being discontinued. After discussing this with Clintdaley, he recommended that I try the Green/Blue Centaur in place of the Slate Blue. With the correct drill and surface prep, he says that his Green/Blue Centaur moves LESS than his Slate Blue.

Just something to consider.

Rock,    I can still get them.  I am hoping this will enable these older slower guys to play more direct up the outside without the early jump off the dry of the reactives, but still make a pop on the back to carry better than these types of bowlers who throw pancake urethane or plastic and like the ball path but can not carry due to no core move. I will punch these up and report back after they toss em, Thanks guys.....

Thanks Clint for the messages and feedback, I'll give you a report also. Hope things are going well with job....and more importantly, I wish you well tearing up the left side. Just popped holes in an Ogre last week...WOW....where have these balls been? Will post on this one as soon as I can quit throwing strikes...729....759 last night. In the meantime I guess jokes about lefties have taken on a new perspective for you now. Al

My Dad (in his 70's) has one that he uses when the lanes get dry, and it works very well. good luck

Another ball to consider could be the Burgundy Pure Hammer. Overall stronger than the Slate Blue, but handles light opil quite well and "behaves" much like a classic urethane ball. With a weak drilling, this could IMHO be another option with a lower RG?

"Problem" with the Slate Blue might be its allery regarding oil and carrydown. On short and thin oil, this ball is an excellent choice, but that's also its limit.

dizzyfugu,

Yep, drilled one for a lady that wanted a new ball to replace her purple urethane Hammer, and wanted the same roll. It rolls the same and hits the same. Now she was a conventional soft speed stroker. What it would do with some hand could be interesting.

I'll let everyone know how these guys do, and I ordered a Slate Blue for myself. Tired of fighting a worn out wood house with lane machine and owner attitude problems. This week went Mon.- 729 with Ogre at the good house. Tues. - 565 on this worn out house with my car waxed Columbia Ricochet swinging 28 to 8, and then my Rotogrip 14 lb SpareTire ball 12 to 8 for the last (and best) game. Wed.- back to the good house and 759 with the Ogre playing 12 to 9. I need something to somehow play more direct there. Swinging the lane I get corners and erratic breakpoints. Thanks, Al

I had the Slate Blue and drilled it 5.5 x 5 (4" pin above and between the bridge).  Even though it is a urethane ball, it will backend like a mother.  In fact, it was a beast on mediums with dry backends.  I was flame throwing it back when I had this ball and it still lit it up on the backend.  I definitely believe it is way stronger than advertised.

Only thing I would look at, is even though it is a pearl urethane, it is a urethane, and will read the lane earlier than some resins.

My Green/Blue goes a lot longer with the same drill and surface prep than the Slate.

Another thing with the Slate. If you wipe the ball between shots, keep wiping it. If you forget, it's possible for the ball to skid a few extra feet, due to the oil on the surface. Doesn't soak into urethane covers anywhere near as fast.

Yes, Andrew, that's what makes the B/G Centaur such a great dry lane ball, but like most balls, even though the B/G C is also a fantastic control ball, it will hook more at the backend, making it less controllable for people with slow ball speeds.

The good thing about the SBG, as a pearl urethane, is that even though  it is a pearlized ball, its essence is that of a urethane. That makes it earlier hooking BUT the up side of that is that the backend is also less than the equivalently polished B/G Centaur. The SBG's dynamic core allows it to still retain a lot of hitting power that pancake cores pearl urethanes do not have.

As a bottom line, for slower ball speed or older or weaker bowlers, the SBG and the B/G C can be a goto, 1-2 combination. If you leave the B/G centaur in box condition (1000 grit matte) it can be used on more heavily oiled lanes. (Not "heavy", just heavier than for which the SBG is needed.)
