Title: Slate Blue impressions
Post by: gsback on April 15, 2008, 04:46:22 AM
I got a 16lb Slate Blue from Corey (MarvinsSkeleton) a couple months ago.  Had it punched up and managed to throw it, oh....maybe 5-6 frames thus far.  Practice hasn't seen dry lanes nor has league.

This weekend though.....different story.  I was able to throw that and a Nitro/R Pearl for the City tournament this weekend.  I actually got to throw the ball 3 games and shot decent since it's the first real time I've used it.  Shot 639 so I really can't complain about it one bit.

Ball is a real control ball.  Nothing jerky about the reaction, especially when I see everyone else throwing the ball 2 mph faster than normal or lofting the daylights out of the ball.

I was playing a small belly arc...ball just rolled and took a real nice even left turn.  No real deflection at the pins considering the ball wasn't entering the pocket with a huge angle.

Very impressed to say the least.  Definitely look forward to using it again....if I ever see lanes that bad off!!

Too sad it is gone. Anyone I know who got his hands on one has become a urethane believer. Let's hope there will be a replacement soon... maybe a urethane ball with the new Mohawk core - a rolly piece for medium to dry lanes...

Heres a a great urethane ball with and great core to back it up.I set mine up i put the pin on my PAP and cg towards the center line on the md line. Talk about control especially for those guys like me that likes the outside. While everyone is burning up the inside out to 7 i'm playing down an in up 5 or 5 to like 3 crushing the pocket.Sorry  had to chime in.....

Couple things for comment.

dizzyfugu, I think urethane has a place, depending on where you bowl and how you throw.  For the conditions I see in travel and all, I thought I would use this more and really haven't used it much.  But I am not big on all the new stuff and haven't been.  Though I finally broke down and bought a new ball (RG Cell), I've been throwing old Faball equipment more than anything.

ramimac, I thought they poured their own stuff.

I would love to find one for a decnet price..

Is there a difference in reaction between this ball and the glowing amulet.

I have amulet and love it.  good ten pin/fried lane ball.

The cores are only slightly different (AMulet is higher RG abd lower differential), but the real difference is the Amulet is a solid and the Slate Blue is a pearl. While both are very even reacting, the Amulet is slightly earlier and smoother.

If you have the Amulet, The Slate Blue is not necessary unless you'd like to try a very different drill from that which is on your Amulet.

ramimac, How does this ball compare to the XXXL.  These two seem like they would be similar.

If I were to put together a 10 best balls of the last 10 years, this ball would be on that list.

The d*mn thing is perfect. If I were Visionary, I'd start re-pouring these things yesterday.

I don't think I'd be stepping on his toes by saying any more than he would like to have something to replace it.  I don't remember him saying that they've got something in mind...no.

It was interesting hearing him say that the sale of the ball was really nothing great until everyone found out it was being discontinued....then it was the ball to have....or so it seems.

They just need to make sure it's a urethane PEARL when they do start re-pouring. There are plenty of options out there if you just want a standard urethane ball, or even a performer (Lane #1 Liberator, for example). But I don't see many urethane pearls offered up.

The Slate Blue gives me a look I can't get with anything else, it can be used as a spare ball or it will carry like gangbusters on its own. It's also one of the 5-10 most attractive balls ever made by any company.

I think the reason this ball got popular right at the end was that it coincided with the point in time when a lot of proprietors started putting out super-dry shots to combat runaway scores that all the hook monsters provide. It was just timing. Lane #1 has proven with the Liberator that the market is there for a high-end urethane.

Finally got my SBG drilled up and got a chance to throw it last night. Wow! Gsback hit it on the head

Control is what this ball is all about. Shot was fairly heavy w/carrydown, but the SBG was still able to play up 10 with a slight belly, and the hit and carry were phenomenal. Typical for Visionary. Had no trouble carrying the 10 thru 3 games, plus it makes spare conversions easily as it never overreacted. The final piece to my all-Gargoyle lineup for this fall, couldn't be happier with how this one rolls. Plan on using the Granite first out, but if it's too much, the Violet will handle it from there. Only wish we had some backends so the Greenie could get some action, but it's one I'll never part with. The SBG wraps up the lineup for dry lane duty, plus it's the best looking spare ball in my opinion. Thanks again to gr8scott6 for this awesome ball! Hopefully you have the same success with your Charcoal Ex. once your back on the lanes.
