Stutter Step - Can Anyone Fix This? *Video*

Hey I have a stutter step in my fourth step. I'm working really hard to fix it. I would appreciate all the help.

Also, be as hard on me as you can. I can take the criticism over the internet.

Why does it need to be fixed?  As long as you're not coming to a complete stop on the approach until you've released the ball it's not a big deal as far as I'm concerned.

I had/have a similar issue and Fred Borden tried to get me to overcome it, with little success and Jeri Edwards just tweaked my first step to make sure I wasn't completely losing my momentum in my approach...  my ball speed is in the 17 mph range...

It seems to me that your ball gets to the top of the swing before you hit your 4th (second to last step) which means you are using the 4th step as a timing step instead of a leverage mechanism.

I have similar issues myself and the only thing I can suggest is to find someone qualified to get your moving parts in better sync.

I'm with J Mac on this one.  Sure it may look different, but it doesn't really seem to be a hinderance to your game.  I have something similar in my approach also.  Mine is after my 2nd step, and it's not as pronounced as yours, but it doesn't seem to hurt my game any.  I wouldn't worry about it.  I posted my vid below so you can see what I'm talking about.  Towards the middle you can see my entire approach.

You have a 6 step approach but you lead off with your left foot.

If you want to solve it, learn to lead off with your right foot.

I count 5 ?

If it was 6, then he would be starting off on his right foot, correct ?

He starts on his left, so if it was 6, then he would end on his right..Bad news for a righty..lol

I had this same problem in my footwork last year with my 4th step in a 6-step approach.  The best way to correct it is to develop a one-step drill and a two-step drill for your footwork. On the one-step drill, start your approach with your right foot in front of your left foot, swing the ball, and go into your slide.  On the two-step drill, start your approach with your left foot in front of your right foot.  Focus on getting your right foot in front of your left foot and keep doing that for maybe several games.  Then go back to your normal approach, focusing on getting your right foot (pivot step) in front of your left foot.  Working it that way into the muscle memory of your game is the best way to correct that short stutter step.

i had the same problem and i changed my approach form a 5 step to a 4 step thus i couldnt do it or i would fall.

I'd call it a timing step.  Watch this video and see if you see any similarities.  <See Marc's lil stutter or timing step in the 4th?>  You could smooth out your approach and look like Marc's.  It wouldn't be the worst approach to style yourself after.

What I see is that your timing is off. You have a fairly fast arm swing which causes you to get the ball to the highest point of the swing a little early causing you to shorten your 4th step in order to get your timing some what back in time. Delay your push away and you should be just fine. Start you swing once your second step is complete. This should allow you to take a slightly longer fourth step and create better leverage and power.

What I see is that you are starting too far up on the approach and then taking 3 BIG steps, not leaving yourself time or room to take the pivot step and then slide.

So you end up making the pivot step a stutter step in order to get your swing and body there in time for the slide.

Try moving back on the approach. Take your 5 steps without the ball in your hand and try to make sure that you make each step bigger than the next, starting slow and small and ending up with a strong pivot step and good slide.

Work on it without the ball until you are comfortable with the steps, then try it with the ball.

True, you might be able to get away with keeping the stutter step, but odds are you won't be able to generate any power or stability being that close to the foul line with 2 steps to go.

you have a stutter because your body is waiting for the ball to reach shoulder height on your downswing. try to lower your backswing a little or as writen before step back some and take longer steps.
