What did I do?
« on: July 09, 2010, 03:53:14 PM »
First, Let me say that I have altered, through polishing or sanding, the surface of many dozens of bowling balls on my spinner.

A few days ago I took my Break Out ( 3 games on it, OOB 4000 Abralon) and decided to change the surface. Our first game shot is pretty wet and I wanted an option quite a bit stronger than my Reign of Fire.

I took a brand new 1000 grit Abralon pad and dutifully wet-sanded the Break Out using the six-side method. When I was done the ball looked like it had been hit with a few coats of polish! Not exactly the result I was looking for, and the ball reacted like a polished solid when I threw it.

Any ideas on what I could have done? I've dulled MANY balls--never saw one finished like this off the spinner. All surface treatment comments welcome.

Golfnut,

Here is my guess at what happened...

For 4000 Abralon, 900G will go with a 500 Grit pad...with lots of pressure doing the 6 sided method to get those good groves in them. Then they take the 4000 Abralon Pad and VERY LIGHTLY use it to basically smooth the tops of the groove to make the ball not grab silly early...

If you just used a 1000 Abarlon pad and used TOO MUCH PRESSURE, you get what you have on your Break Out now...

I would:

Do the 6 sided method with a 500 Abralon pad using lots of pressure to get the deep grooves back in.
Use the 1000 Abralon with LIGHT PRESSURE to smooth the top of the grooves just slightly.

Think this will give you the look you are looking for..

Hope this helps!

Mike

only two things can cause that, too much speed and too much pressure.

try again with less pressure if it still isnt looking right (try a small spot like the top while its in the spinner) then put it in the spinner cup and soak the pad sand by hand and turn the ball by hand. For me it was not enough water and way too much pressure. wouldnt have that problem with a 2 speed spinner but why replace a spinner that works fine now.

Thanks for the responses. From the replies...my guess would be that I definitely used too much pressure.

I will try a 500 with pressure and then the 1000 with light pressure to see if I can get the finish I'm looking for. Thanks again guys.

No, brand new towel as well....

I know you said the pad was new, but did you use a towel that happened to have some polish left on it by chance?

+1. I suppose that too much heat was involved. Did you use water during the sanding process? And what did the pad look and feel like after the sanding? I suppose that the heat got too high, through pressure and/or speed, like icewall suggested, that the coverstock material actually got soft under the pad.

Maybe do the same again, but just use less speed, less pressure and more water - otherwiese I could not explain your result!
