Hey Rick, congratulations buddy. That's an awesome win there. I used to bowl the ABT Masters Division in the S.F. Bay Area, but now that division is pretty much dead. We probably crossed paths at the Nationals around 96-2000 at the Showboat/Castaways in Las Vegas.

How big is your "Masters Divsion," in Chicago. One time around 1998 when I bowled Nationals in Vegas, I met a bunch of guys from Chicago.

Sorry for the slow reply - for some reason, I haven't checked this particular forum in a few days.

Ram - We have been struggling to keep Masters entries up over the past couple years.  Before they changed the average cap on the Classic from 190 to 200, Masters entries would regularly outpace Classic entries.  After that, many 190-200 Masters bowlers (including me) moved down to the Classic division.  That caused Masters entries to take a pretty substantial hit.  Since then, the bowling economy has slowed a bit, taking even more of a toll on entries.

In the past few years, we have tried many different things to try to get the Masters entries back up, but to no avail.  Last year, we had to lower the guarantee for Masters, and this year, we have had to discontinue it altogether.  These days, we get something like 35-45 entries in the Masters at a "regular" event.  Of course, for the big ones (Memorial Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving), we get more entries.

We are kicking around some new ideas.  You might want to go to the ABT Chicago website and look at the survey that is on there.  If you happen to be a member, feel free to voice your opinion.

They lowered entry fees recently, but it's still not enough IMO.  I can enter a local handicap tourney for a shot at 1500 bucks with an entry of 30 bucks, or I can enter a ABT tourney for a shot at 1k for 45 or more.  The math doesn't add up!

splendorlex - I attended the first NC Ball Reviews gathering at Ron's place in Winston-Salem, around two and a half years ago.  It was a hoot (ask Strider - he was there), and among other things, I had the privilege of receiving some first-class instruction from Ron.  I hope to be able to attend another NC gathering in the future, and renew my acquaintance with Ron and others from BallReviews.com.

Yes, yes, I know it's not a real tourney shot, but the fact remains I saw diminishing returns in ABT as my average went up.  

Rick,

I've been reading a lot of Ron's stuff and hope to attend a clinic with him someday as well.  I tried out the magic carpet recently and intend to fully invest in that as well, it worked out nicely for me.  We need to convince Ron to do a Chicago area clinic!

Ron did one about a year and a half ago in Plano.  I was unable to make it.  You're right - it would be nice if he would do another.  Maybe you could start a thread.

Ed is talking about doing exactly what you said.  He is going to require a certain mininum number of entries within a certain period prior to the big events, such as the Chicagoland Open and the Labor Day Open.

Regarding your comment about handicap in the Masters, Ed is aware that it is an issue for higher end Masters bowlers.  I'll pass along what you have said, because he is always (especially these days of low Masters entries) looking for feedback from bowlers.
