900 global, MR ERIC got your ears on??
« on: July 28, 2009, 07:53:56 AM »
just a few questions, I have noticed that some of your bowling balls state they are 4k abralon, and others say 4k grit abralon what is the difference?? also some balls like the break point pearl state just polish, do you take the ball from 600 dirrectly to polish stage?? and for the polish you use can you tell me is it a grit polish(like rough buff/800)or is it a finesse type polish?? do you use the same polish (when stated polish) on all your equipment or is it different from ball to ball?? do you sell your secret polishes yet?? any info would be appreciated.. thankss slashrr69/jcjufer

Slasherr69,
There is an article on our website in the tech section that tells what each of our finishes are and the steps (sanding, compound, polish) to get to our box surfaces.  The chart in the article is about a year old and we have added a couple finishes mainly by the subtraction and addition of a buffing stage.  Hope this helps.

Slashrr69,
Per the article are each step in the sanding process is outlined and with what type sanding paper is used.  For example, our polish finish goes through the steps in the following order:
     1) Sander #1 = 50 micron
     2) Sander #2 = 50 micron
     3) Sander #3 = 40 micron
     4) Sander #4 = 30 micron
     5) Then to the brown compound #1
     6) Then to the brown compound #2
     7) Then right to the white compound
     8) Followed by a dry buff
     9) Next the "wax/polish" is applied
     10) Final dry buff

In the article we also state the our micron pads are from 3M.

This should answer your question on how balls goes from sanding to compound/polish.  For whatever finish we have listed on the box, we follow the sequence of steps per the article to get to that finish.  Our polish is a grit polish.  AMF and 900 Global use these same sets of finish chemicals...only one type of factory brown compound, one factory white compound, and one factory wax/polish. Currently we do not sell our polishes.  It is something that we might look into in the future.  We suggest, again per the article, that to get our compound finishes you apply an ~ 1200-1500 grit compound (depending upon the method of application) and then to get our polish finish apply an ~ 2000 grit polish  Hope this clears a little bit more up.

thanks
Nick

nick thanks for the info.. some of your equipment says 4k abralon and others say 4k grit abralon, is there a difference?? also the brown compound you use, if it is 1200/1500 grit and the polish stage is 2k grit polish.. what is the white compound grit?? or does the polish stage have a added slip agent added to the polish?? whats the difference in a compound and a polish if both have grit in them?? thankss again slashrr69

My bad, forgot to answer that one....4k vs. 4k grit abralon...there is no difference.  At one point we wanted to call it one and not the other.

The 12/1500 will be the ~ finish coming out of the "brown + white compound".  The 2000 polish has a very fine chemical makeup and has less of the abrasive materials in the material compared to compounds.  The specific ingredients are of course proprietary but the finish created is a smooth and shiny look as opposed to the hazed look of only compounds.

so, are you saying that after the brown then the white compounds(together/same ball) are applied the finish is between 1200/1500?? then the 2k polish is applied?? what is the end result if only the brown is used and what is the end result if only the white is used(say as for the tcs polish and tcs compound) what does the tcs stand for??  thankss again

The tcs finishes are ones from the past and have not been used on 9G or AMF.  However, they are available if we choose to use them.  Out of the brown only compound you can expect a 600-800 grit finish.

So I look at the tech info on factory finishes all the time but I can't seem to find anywhere that explains what a matte finish is.  I know what matte is but how do I achieve that finish on my Terminal Velocity.
