Anyone else with a cracked S75
« on: November 12, 2009, 12:06:51 AM »
Hey guys,

Just checking out there to see if anyone else ever had a 900 Global ball crack.  I used my Break S75 on Monday night in league.  I came home and replaced it on my shelf in my heated/insulated garage.  Had to include those details to head off the first wave of questions...

Last night I went out there tp play around on the spinner with the cover of it, and there was a crack of significant width [1/16 to 1/8"] around half or a little more of the ball.  It''s been very mild out, even at night.  Since I work in pharmaceuticals, we use 59-86* as recommended storage conditions for our product line, so I use that as a benchmark for the temp to keep my garage at.  Granted, sometimes if it''s brutally hot out, my garage may get to 88-90, but since I have so much equipment out there, it would be nice for my wallet if I watched the temperature out there, so I do.  I''ve been known to open the door of my foyer that leads to the garage to let some of the A/C out there into the garage.  My wife loves that........

It just took me by surprise because with all the stories on BR of certain equipment cracking, I''ve NEVER had a ball crack before.

Just weird, I thought.

Anyone else out there?

Mine has some small hairline cracks around one of the fingers but other than the s75 I haven't had any other 900 ball crack.

just the other night i saw i had a small hairline crack above my ring finger. It isn't connected to any holes yet, and is about 3/4in long.

Hope it doesn't get worse

I have seen this type of post over and over, for years.  Yes bowling balls have a tendency to crack,...and sometimes for no apparent reason.

I've had balls, in my "ball room" ,
crack all the way around from just sitting on a ball rack. They were there for months and one day I walk in and there's a big crack.  Who's fault is that,,.?
First of all let me say that in over 45 years of bowling I personnaly have never seen a new undrilled ball crack/ed. That being said I think that the majority of cracked balls are owned, drilled, and bowled with.
That gives me three variables to look at:

OWNER: not ever one takes care of there equipment the same way. I think the better you take care of your equipment the longer it will last.  The list is as long as you want it to be on how to take care of your stuff, most people do very little to preserve their equipment.

DRILLING: Drilling weakens the structure of your ball. As soon as the first hole is put in the ball it loses strength. The bigger and deeper the holes the worse it becomes. Now add slugs for thumbs that I've seen actually 'hammered' in, and these new switch grips that take a giant hole, and all the super glues chemical reaction. Then finger grips, that also need super glue,..and don't forget our blessed balance holes. Also remember that most all finger grips and slugs use the same drill bits,...over and over. They get realy dull really quick, that means more pressure to drill and more heat on the sides of the holes,..again less strength.

BOWLED WITH: A new bowling ball is built to do one thing, CRASH into almost 40 pounds of stacked wood, usually with as much force as the owner can inflict, not just once,....but hundreds and hundreds of times. All the while being banged and bumped on each throw through a mechanical maze of lane and metal ball returning equipment, where it meets its final destination back on the ball rack, banging into other balls. While all this is happening the surface is being scuffed, scraped, scratched, and covered with cheap gooey lane lubricant (oil) and dirt. Now throw in the ride in the car to and from the center, the week in the trunk, or garage, and you have the average guy and his three ball bag.

Imagine the same abuse for your favorite $200 reel, softball bat, driver, shotgun, or pistol,....they wouldn't last very long.

I agree that some balls crack.  And if I had a ball that i honestly thought was a defective ball I would not hesitate to send it back to the manufacture for them to look at.  But I don't think that todays bowling balls are built to last as long as the balls of yester-year, nor should we expect them too.

This is my opinion, not that of Global900, or any other ball company. jim

I agree with you, Jim.

I was just curious as to if anyone has ever had their S75 or 900 Global crack on them.  While I, like you, have seen numerous posts on this topic in other forums, I''ve never seen too too many on the 900 front.  Maybe it''s because they''re a "newer" company, or something else.

I 100% agree balls can''t last forever.  It just took me by surprise in that in past lives I''ve essentially abused equipment [leaving it in car trunk virtually all summer, never cleaning, etc.] and this is the first ball that''s ever cracked on me and I''d taken wonderful "care" of it.

Thanks for the info, but I''''m pretty sure that I am out of the warranty phase, having bought it about mid-2008, nor am I looking for a replacement from the company.  I realize these things happen.

Maybe if a 900 person were to contact me, I could tap their brain for more information on top of the good info already in this thread as to what/if I could have done better in maintaining the piece, or if it was just something out of my control as was mentioned here by our esteemed and well-respected jimensminger and charlest.

I have...it happened to be a brand new Global ball also. I also have had 2 balls crack by that manufacturer. I'm not pointing any fingers, as I wasn't bothered by the sistuation one bit...but I have had over 500 different bowling balls and these are the only three that have ever cracked.

900 Global took care of the new ball and one used ball. The other ball was not a concern of mine and was being retired anyways.

I love 900 Global equipment, but as people say Ebonite balls tend to quit after so many games, maybe Global balls crack....who knows.

my Bounty has not cracked and actually has a very sturdy cover, ive bowled on some pretty old wood lanes when i went on vacation and it didnt even track up either. I'm very happy with my 900 Global and out of those that are thrown by others at my house, none have cracked as well
