PBA Lake County Open Recap

Hello everyone,
Here is a recap of last week’s tournament in Hammond, IN.
We bowled on the Dick Weber Open pattern on new Brunswick Pro anvilane.  Last week I thought that this pattern was strips of oil and dry.  They actually modified the pattern a little.  The graph looked a lot flatter with a little less volume.  There was a lot of hook on the lane with big transitions.  The best look that I had to start was using a shiny Break to try to control the angle down lane.  This worked for a short time, but the heads went fast enough that I needed to look for more length.  I used an Nkryption Code for a game, but only managed to bowl 201 and 191 to start.  Through the course of the game several balls went down the lane.  I settled on a Heist that I used a lot in the summer.  This ball gave me better push through the front with more of a snap type look down lane.  I was able to use this ball for the rest of the block and kept bowling medium games in the 220s.  The scores weren’t very high and I was only 3 pins out of the top 32 after 7 games.  This was one of those weeks that the players with high rev rates, and good speed could create the sharp angle through the front of the lane with good recovery to create good carry.
The second block started off with a lot more overall hook in the middle of the lane.  This forced everybody in even deeper than the morning.  I tried to start with an Nkryption code, and the Heist.  I still could only manage a 201, 190 start again.  I needed to try to do something to carry, so I moved in deeper and slow hooked it.  The problem was the friction was making it difficult to get the ball to turn the corner the right way.  It would either stop too quick, and flat ten, or over bounce and go high.  I can do a lot of things with the ball, but the higher speed and revs thing is still a challenge for me.  I’m still working on some release techniques so hopefully I can get that solved.  As you can expect, when you’re not matched well, it’s hard to get your swing loose.  This made it hard to make good shots, and my carry suffered even more.
The lanes broke down so much faster I ended up in front of the ball return, using a Creature to try to get length.
Next week we have the Ultimate Scoring tournament on a modified house shot type pattern.  If there is any type of theme we’ve seen so far, it’s been the use of the word “modified”.  We’ve heard it a few times already, so we’ll see what the rest of the swing will bring us.  We have two tournaments in 6 days, so there will be plenty of games in a short time.
